Who do you think was important?

Importance is an opinion, and relative to the person. Of course the topper of zion's list would be zion, because if he didn't exist then, well, he wouldn't exist, and therefore no one would be important to him.

For me, I am no. 1.
Then comes my Mother and Father only because I would probably not be here if it weren't for them. I guess their parents are important as well. That's 7 people so far. I would say my grandparent's parents, but that would put us over quota wouldn't it? Instead I'll have to say God is important, (or for the evolutionists--that little molecule that started it all). To personify the universe, I would say the environment in which that adorable little molecule/adorable little God survived was important, and lastly You, Athena. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have wasted 2 minutes typing this out.

I'd say that makes you pretty important, for the time being, at least.

I guess I didn't either..."of 1800 in US history." threw me off, as I had no idea what the hell was meant.

For some reason I as thinking there is some list with 1800 people on it, and I must choose ten of them.

I’m still not sure I understand the question. Presumably not the year 1800 but the 19th Century – or else Abe Lincoln’s name cannot figure.

Well, aside from Lincoln and Whitney, and without reflecting upon the matter at length, how about: Andrew Jackson, Robert E Lee, Ulysses S Grant, Sam Houston, Leland Stanford, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, Thomas Alva Edison, Mark Twain, and P T Barnum.

Who deserve to get promoted above those?

Darwin: He put the final nail in God's coffin.

Some people didn't attend the funeral though so they think he is still alive.

(i will disregard the criteria of post 1800 american history, especially since cosmic traveller has some none US citizens on his list)

Hey you guys, play the game! Athena asked for 19th Century Americans. My suggestions were pretty obvious - but it would be much more interesting to hear the case made for some neglected figures who tend to be overlooked. Who else might figure from the field of science and invention, for example, apart from Whitney and Edison? Who made a really important literary/cultural/intellectual impact at the time, but is now forgotten? (Of course, if they're totally forgotten, you won't be able to answer that question! :D )

Aack.....

We are still getting all of the obvious answers. Will someone please inject a little originality into their suggestions? Athena asked for "something more out of the ordinary"

Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Morse, Thomas Edison, John Brown, John Philip Sousa.

Thomas Jefferson for the Louisana Purchase. "Although the Constitution did not specifically empower the federal government to acquire new territory by treaty, Jefferson concluded that the practical benefits to the nation far outweighed the possible violation of the Constitution."

Samuel Morse for the Telagraph. The Telagraph changed the way business could be done.

Thomas Edison for many inventions and making the business of electric lighting happen.

John Brown for forcing Americans to choose sides on the issue of slavery.

John Philip Sousa will someday be included with Beethoven and Bach as being one of the elite composers of music.

Does it have to be america in the 1800s?
because Hitler was born in 1889, and he made i huge-ass impact later on.
that's technically the 1800s. he lived in the 1800s for 11 years before the century turned to 1900.
