I've just got around to getting online at home and I need a good (but FREE) antivirus program.
Can anyone advise me where to head for?

Suggest you also get a firewall, like Zone Alarm.
The basic is free. Windows integrated firewall doesn't count and I suggest you turn it off after installing Zone Alarm or some other.

Avast http://www.avast.com/
AVG http://free.avg.com/

Both of these are good.

I would also suggest avoiding programs like Limewire, as they are the source of many infections nowdays.

I also suggest since you are banking on freebies, to periodically use Kaspersky's online scanner - it's limited to identifying active viruses, not cleaning them. Kaspersky usually picks up what those other AVs miss, so in the event of a pesky stealth virus, at least you'll know what you're dealing with.

I'd suggest installing this: Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)

It's "Preventative software" it will stop a lot of rogue websites and viruses from being able to infect your system in the first place (better than having to remove them after being infected)

I'd also suggest if you are using Outlook/Windows Mail as a POP or IMAP mail program to make sure you go through the settings, force all emails to be received in "Plaintext". Don't autoconnect or download new mail automatically. Block images and external contents and don't open attachments from people that you aren't expecting. (Emails are responsible for a large number of virus infections, along with Peer Share networking software being exploit and rogue websites although slowly each of these is becoming a lesser problem with constant attempts to keep ahead of the exploiters)

I've bought and installed Norton 360 and it seems to be taking care of things. Had to uninstall AVG tho as it was chewing stuff up too much.
Everything seems to be a-ok now, so thanks for all the help guys.
