My first source of Negro Klan membership is the book, "The Ku Klux Spirit", by J.A. Rogers, noted Negro historian of the 1920's. The Ku Klux Spirit was first published in 1923, by Messenger Publishing Co. It was republished in 1980, by Black Classic Press. On page 34 of his book we find the amazing passage: "A fact not generally known is that there were thousands of Negro Klansmen. These were used as spies on other Negroes and on Northern Whites."

This makes me think of the Chapelle Show. That skit with the Black white-supremacist was great.

Okay, Athelwulf . . . On topic now! . . .

What I'm wondering is why there were Blacks that were willing to do this. Also, why would the klan even hire Black spies?

As an African American myself this really doesnt surprise me all that much. I have met plenty of "blacks" who wish there were anything but black (for whatever reason) so I can only imagine what a black in those days (who had it a million times worse than blacks today) would have done to try to be accepted by whites :m:

I don't know if that is true, but it isn't unbelievable. There were whites in the Black Panthers, more than you might think. The Black Panthers didn't stand for the same kinds of ideas per se (i.e. hate, racial supremecy, terrorism, etc.), they were more for rights and wanted to lessen white political dominance, but it's a comparison. Ben Stein was a Black Panther at one time.

Yes, I believe this is actually true but I don't remember where.

There is however historical precedent. Back during slavery in the Deep South, light skinned blacks (having been influenced by white prejudice) generally looked down on the ir darker skinned counterparts as inferiors. It has also been noted that house maids during the era were extremely haughty and viewed field workers with contempt. From this we can know that slavery did not necessarily unite blacks, on the contrary it went as far as to make some blacks into 'snitches' who would expose rebellious plots to their masters.

Slavery isn't a racial motivation; it's an economic one. Turn against capitalism now!
