View Full Version : Anyone know Arab pop music?
I'm looking for a song. Heard it once about 10years ago... I think the song is Egyptian and it's sung by a female. It's very upbeat and goes 'willy willy.... willy willy, willy willy halaaaaaaaaaa with lots of female arabic tongue rolling sounds. Those are the only clues I can provide, unfortunately.
-thanks

I know you said that those are the "only clues," but can you possibly place the era of the piece? Egyptian and female: first person who comes to my mind is, of course, Oum Khoultoum; but that ("willy willy.... willy willy, willy willy halaaaaaaaaaa") sure as hell doesn't sound like Khoultoum.
hypewaders 07-27-09, 09:33 AM Waleeeeeih- Shu Biddak? Wuleeeeeah? Ha'la? :D
If it had been Fairouz ya9neh, I might have recognized it.
Try surfing around Rotana (http://www.rotana.net/) a while and you might happen on it. Unfortunately, the first "wave" of Arab-pop is obliterating the era you're interested in, in most current promotion and programming. Listen to internet radio streams from the mideast (http://www.arab.de/arab-radio.html), and rays of bright sunlight will peek out occasionally (do I sound musically disgruntled?). That may be your best bet, if nobody here recognizes it. Maybe if you will record something and post a link so we can hear you (!)
When I try to replay what I listened to, or was captivated by in Beirut in the 80s (filtering out the normal world-pop and world-retro music background that everyone hears everywhere) the most amazing and beautiful things I had ever heard keep getting harder for me to find- just like some states of mind when you've lived places. Part of getting out of touch on many levels.
If you rewind just a few years, Arab kids and their parents adored the same music. Consequently they shared a lot of mutual fun and understanding. If you have ever been so lucky as to live in such a place for one hour, cherish it forever along with the music.
Sometimes, I'm afraid something's dying. :bawl:

wtf?
parmalee 07-27-09, 04:12 PM parmalee
is a drone a feature of finnish shit?
Absolutely. Finland is perhaps best known for it's exportation of various shades of metal, but the New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal--represented first and foremost by Circle, who composed an endearing (and emphatically not metal) little ditty for the real Parmalee: http://wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=20873&archive=30980--complements the ironically named New Wave of Finnish New Age. Not really "New Age" crap, but rather rambling, formless, and kinda weird folky shit with bits of prog and psych and some drones thrown in. Avarus, Tomutonttu, Lau nau, Uton, and Vapaa are representative of the genre
Ideally the drone would be interminable, but the fact of human mortality does not facilitate this. John Cage proposed a viable solution with his interpretation of Satie's "Vexations"--John Cale demonstrates a fragment of this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYHIqMmtS-0. But even with an unlimited supply of willing and able young virtuosos to play the part, either war, natural disaster, plague, or extinction will inevitably bring it to an end.
"The song remains which names the land over which it sings." --Martin Heidegger

I would love to add bagpipes to my arsenal. I just picked up a practice chanter, but without the whole package it's hard to knock down a wall--I tend to use a couple of droning oscillators in tandem.

Nein.
Definitions vary, but I regard the continuous or repeated use of the tone, chord, arpeggiated chord, or pattern as drone proper. Consider Nico's "All That Is My Own" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClSUT3ZMiVs--"All That Is..." begins at 3:12): the harpsichord and one of the violas lend the drone--it is unfair to discriminate against the harpsichordist because he can't sustain his notes for very long!
I recorded a cover of "All That Is..." for which I diligently transcribed all of John cale's parts for eclectic instrumentation. I had to re-title it ("Desert Song") because I didn't want to have to pay licensing fees for two songs (Robert Wyatt's "Sea Song"--drone-y, but no drones--was the other one). Oddly, no one seemed to recognize the song. Perhaps too many notes spoiled the pot.

That was hideous- 14 inches right of centerline. You have to visualize the centerline passing under your right heel (from the left seat) and put it there. Quel manche, wash akhraq.

Era? Definitely the 90's, probably late 90's. The production value of the song was too high to have made sooner.

Yea I know what you mean about the changing music scene. I remember listening to some of my Dads old Arab tapes years ago and it's pretty awesome stuff. The style is completely unique and the singers have an intensity that you don't normally see in western music. Most of the new stuff I come across sounds like an arab spin on western fluff.
