cosmictraveler 09-17-05, 09:34 AM To understand anything you must listen to your teachers, read the literature they want you to and understand there are many points of view as to what anything is about.
Crucifixor 09-17-05, 09:55 AM Psy - Soul
I forget what other part of the word is translated from ology - but basically psychology. Study of the soul ;)
Uhm, its really about the study of individuals, more specifically their minds. Start reading some freud and be horrified, but then step back, and remember; he saught only a dynamic model of the mind. Just that he came to conclusions that humans could be expected to come to, such conclusions that hinderred his model.
An essential book for you to get would be a text called "Theories of Personality". It will give you a good feel for the history of progression of the science.

Hello, WP,
Wow! I don't have the time or space to give you the details of what I used to teach in the 16 quarters in college, but here's a very basic nutshell:
It's the study of what motivates humans to act/react the way they do. There are many, many theories and good teachers will attempt to cover as many of them as possible.
The most basic of basics is what I always called the "Three Ss" - Survival, Sustenance, and Sex. That's the true lowest level - but of course there are many layers on top of that. Things like ambition, desire for power, recognition, wealth, fame, etc. In fact, the list is almost endless.
You mentioned you are doing Abnormal P. For some practical experience in that particular field, you have VERY fertile ground right here - these forums. You'll find classic examples of every type right here. Everything from certifiable idiots to true genius (yes, genius IS considered abnormal). You'll see deep/moderate/mild forms of everything.
Aside from all that, do you have any specific question(s) I could help you with?
To understand anything you must listen to your teachers, read the literature they want you to and understand there are many points of view as to what anything is about.
Thankyou for the brief info ...
I will take in account that there is a lot of points to look at.

Hey thanks for the info and the basics you have broken down form me
That’s interesting that genius is considered as abnormal I feel that psychology has a lot more to offer than I expected …
Yes infact I have a gazillion questions …thanks ..but ill ask the major ones I need to know :-
As I am new to this I would really appreciate it if you can help me with the following questions :-
1.) in an exam of any regular psy exam …what are the things we need to do to get the possible mark ?
2.) although I have just started the course I would like to know that are there any specific marks for structure of an essay in the exam ?
3) Does psychology need to be backed up with a lot of evidence which includes scientific evidence ?
4.) does it need to be looked at in depth and concluded with our own opnions right at the end of each essay ?
5.) I understand a lot of reasearch is done in psychology but do we need to look at the usefulness and the limitations always ? I know from what ive been taught that there is a need of finding out the usefullness and limitations and we need to look at specific areas which include :- Methodoloy ,participants , differences ,individuals , validity , eclogical validity , replicability , reliabilitly , culture and history , demand charactersisitics and ethics ....so are there a lot of questions involved ? and do we need to look at all these in every research we do ? or every question we get ? any help would be appreciated thankyou

Be sure to check out this one;
Christopher F. Monte. Beneath the Mask. Fort Worth: Harcourt Brace, 1995.
Its the second text I read when undertaking my pre-study, its a rich tapestry of intellectual seekings into the mind.
Psy - Soul

"ology" i think came from the greek "logos", which meaning is related to thought/intellect viz. science. psyche is also greek for soul. this would be how we arrive at "the study of the soul"
or; science of soul
or;study of the science of the soul
found some :)

thanks much!
Just to be picky- the "log" of ology is actually Greek for 'word'. (See also diaLOGue, meaning through words). It's pretty much how the Greek's explored concepts. Many bizarre distortions later we get what we have.

Saints preserve us - so many questions! :D
Seriously, WP, the best possible thing I can tell you to do is pay attention to what your particular professor puts emphasis on.
One of the reasons there is so much diversity in this particular field is that it is NOT an exact science! When I was teaching every day (for years) absolutely no two of us teachers agreed on everything. Things can also develop/change very quickly.
What I'm really saying is that the key to good grades in this class (and any other, for that matter) is to "get inside the head of your teacher." Find out what he/she believes to be true and go with the flow! Even if you personally reach conclusions that differ from the prof (all of us did in school), keep them out of the classroom and give the answers that the teacher wants. I can't emphasize that too much! If the teacher is convinced the sky is green and that everyone is paranoid, then you'd better agree with it - while you're in that class. Even though it goes against what most of us stand for (truth) it really IS the secret to getting top grades.
"Even though it goes against what most of us stand for (truth) it really IS the secret to getting top grades."
Thats right , kissing ass and fabricating are essentials in the field of psychology .

Really? Tell us honestly, now - exactly how many years have you spent in the field? 20? 10? None?
"Kissing ass" has nothing to do with it. The fact is that it's a highly opinionated field and while in class it is no different than many other subjects. You won't get very far in a Lit class or philosophy if you fail to understand that you have to follow the teacher's lead while in class. (Tests, essays, etc.)
Following a teachers lead is different from repeating possible nonsense just to please the teacher . Science is supposed ultilize different opinions to test for validity . Dissent should be welcomed . Your kiss-ass methodology may indeed be the secret for advancement , but is unethical and demeaning to the student .
If something is repeated often enough , it can become ingrained - without proper consideration .

I do understand what you're saying, Abnack, but it doesn't match the real world. There is nothing wrong with having a dissenting opinion but don't kane a habit of expressing it in class. The proper time for that is after you have gained your own credentials.
You should always remember that during the time you are still in school you are in direct competition with all the other students. And the ones who come out with the best grades have a much better shot at the top jobs. Then you express your own opinions. I'm sorry you view it as unethical and demeaning, I don't because that IS how the world works. My point is that many very bright and promising students have shot themselves down in flames by not realizing the proper time to show their independent thinking.
A little analogy if I may: It's much like driving through an intersection. You most certainly may be right and have the right-of-way. However, if it comes to it, dead right is still dead.
I also believe that in lower level classes, students haven't been exposed to all sides of the issue. You may not even be considering another side. So is arguing with the professor the stuborness of the teacher or the student?

I agree.
And as to your question, which one is more likely to know what they are talking about?
Thanks, light for responding and clarifying your position that truth in the classroom should take a back seat to possible advancement and fawning subservience .
"..the sky is green and that everyone is paranoid ..."
What's wrong with : " Excuse me professor, this seems incorrect "...?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
You need to remember what your goals in school really are: to learn as much as possible and to obtain the highest grades you can. When the class is over, that's all that will have mattered. THEN you can express your own opinions that differ with the teachers. It has absolutely nothing to do with "taking a back seat to advancement."
The only, only , only thing I've been trying to get across here is that if you want to win in the system you have to understand how the system works. But if you prefer to be graduated with a 2.0 GPA, that's entirely up to you.
Light , you just wrote :
"It has absolutely nothing to do with "taking a back seat to advancement."
Yet , you wrote previously :
"Even though it goes against what most of us stand for (truth) it really IS the secret to getting top grades."
I think that we agree alot on how the "system" works ...You're saying it's OK ...I'm not .

Sorry! I took "advancement" to mean advancement in the science.
Careful! I never once said it was OK, just that that's what it takes.
