Every once in a while I will bite my tongue or the inside of my cheek. Why do I do this? I have been eating almost all my life. How can I not know where my tongue and cheek are?

hhhhhhmmmmmmmmm:)

I hate biting my tongue, right on the side and it makes that funny crunching noise. And then when your around people and it happens you make this stupid face and you have to tell them i bit my tongue...how embarrassing. At least when your teeth fall out you wont have that problem:D

but why do you think you do it? You have forgotten where your tongue is?

sides and on the inside of my cheek the most.
And does a person really have to think when they eat. Think about moving the tongue and cheeks out of the way?

I do that not often. Not my tongue but the side of my cheek.
Hurts like hell!!! What is worse is then it swells up a bit and then
you keep biting it again.

Oh damn! I do the same thing. Drives me nuts. I bite my cheeks my tongue and also my lips. It's like I can't chew and think at the same time. Do you ever choke on your food when you breathe at the wrong time? You'd think we'd learn.

Some people say that with age, we lose some of our sensitivities.
Have you also noticed that when you eat with a spoon, you sometimes miss the mouth a bit, spill a little over your lips - and it doesn't really bother you?

A while back, this started happening to me, but then I made a concerted effort to pay attention how I eat. It doesn't happen anymore that I would bite my tongue or cheek while eating.

You could be subvocalizing: mouthing thought words at the same time you are chewing.
There are also movements we make with our mouths and tongues that relate to emotions. Clenching the jaw is an obvious one when we are angry. But there are other movements inside the mouth that are connected to feelings. If you are thinking of certain issues while you are eating, or are stressed and in a hurry, some of these emotional movements may get tossed into the chewing movements. Suddenly someone is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It's an evolutionary trait. When you gorge your food hastily you often bite your tongue or inside of your cheek.
It's a sign you should not eat so fast.. eating fast means swallowing whole chunks at the time which is bad for your digestive system.
Makes one think doesn't it... ? Maybe fat people don't have that trait.

Warning: above rambling is complete bullshit :p

Every once in a while I will bite my tongue or the inside of my cheek. Why do I do this? I have been eating almost all my life. How can I not know where my tongue and cheek are? That's really common. I bite the inside of my cheek several times a year.

You don't know where your cheek is because it folds and there are no muscles in there to give you kinesthetic feedback. You know precisely where your hand is when you fold your elbow because your arm and wrist are chock-full of muscles, and they send signals back to your brain telling you exactly how extended or contracted they are. As a baby you sort that all out and build synapses that allow you to touch your hand to your ankle in the dark, with unerring accuracy, no matter how you're sitting or standing.

In your mouth you've got a sphincter muscle around your lips, a set of muscles that move your jawbone, and an elaborate group in your tongue. But none of those are positioned properly to tell you that your cheek is folded inward by the vacuum you just created by swallowing or sucking on something, and that it's on a collision course with your teeth.

I knew a lady who chewed on her cheeks as a nervous habit. Eventually it built up little skin tags that reshaped the inside of her mouth and that reinforced the habit. Ultimately they were so covered with scar tissue that she had to go into the hospital for reconstructive surgery and subsist on a liquid diet while wearing athletic teeth guards as they healed.

I hope this gives you the perpective to write off what's happening to you as a trifle. You're perfectly normal. :)

Great post, Fraggle...very informative.

...so I shouldn't feel like an idiot when I bite the side of my mouth. That's good to know. :)

so why would a person bite their tongue?

Well, yeah, it was well written, and it seemed as if he knew what he was talking about, but ....is what he said true? Or are you just impressed enough by his writing style to just believe it?

...so I shouldn't feel like an idiot when I bite the side of my mouth. That's good to know.

Oh, well, it looks as if you're just ready to believe it ...without any substantive evidence or documentation at all.

I know people aren't identical on each side. My eyes aren't identical, my ears aren't identical, etc. I know boobs aren't exactly the same either. I'm saying, mine aren't noticeably different.

At least YOU know who is responsible. If I catch the person who is biting MY tounge.....
