So one day I find this Sciforums thing and I find it engaging. First time any of these things struck me as worth the effort of typing.

Anyway, there's this guy I encounter early on who seems quite irreverent, occasionally blasphemous, and is funny as hell. In other words, my kinda guy.;)

It turns out he take snaps.
Photos.
Pitchuas'.
He must be a real tiny little guy tho. I mean, to be able to get that close to those bugs...;)

Seriously, tho: They are amazing!!! Just fucking amazing!!! You gotta check this site!
Many of you already know about this guy's work, but if not, go see, go see.

Enmos' pics fucking rock! Rock like Eddie Van Halen on really good speed.

Enmos quick photo question. I was trying to take some images at last nights Christmas eve dinner with a digital camera. I was using a "night" setting without a flash, which was giving me the warm glow of light I wanted, but all my pics were shaky and unclear. Any suggestions? Maybe less coffee and a tripod...or a faster shutter setting?

If you truly want great pictures in dim light situations you need a DSLR with a lightning fast lens. Shooting in dim light situations is always difficult with a normal digital camera. In fact, I usually avoid it ;)
Not much bugs after dark any way eh ? lol
A tripod might help but keep in mind that if someone moves it will show in the picture due to the long shutter time. Only quick solution is to use flash I'm afraid.. or have everyone sit still while you take the photo.

Thanks Mac, you have a wonderful Christmas !! :)

Actually they are all around. Once you get into it you see them everywhere :D
Of course I have a few fav spots, for the dragonflies for example.
Do you mean any pictures in particular ?

Just if you know its gonna be a full moon and a foggy night, so you plan to take pics. Or are you walking by the window, see the moon against a foggy background, go get the camera?

I don't do nights though :p

Actually, I plan most of my 'shoots'. After work I just go to one or some of my spots and see what's there. Sometimes I'll go find some new territory :)
I always take note of the weather of course in my decisions where to go. The foggy images for example, I saw it was particularly foggy, got in the car in drove to the spot I took the images. I knew the surroundings there, but there was some luck involved of course..

So.. I don't know.. a little bit of everything I suppose.

So no extra lenses, only the fixed one ;)

- 8 mp

Yea.. but I won't.
I do minor contrast and color enhancements now, any more and it will become more of an artwork than photography.
This will either do or it won't.. anyway.. I'm not really that interested in any sort of recognition. It's a hobby.

Enmos: Incorrect.

I enter dozens, if not hundreds, of photo competitions every year and I have yet to see one that doesn't allow an image that hasn't been posted on forums/other photo comps etc. They will however stipulate that the photo can't have been published - that means in actual book print on sale in a shop, not pasted on a forum or your own webspace.

If you're in England I can give you links to many photo comps. Let me know.

Different culture, life, look, feel, I guess:shrug:. I was only there for three days before I flew to Sorrento, Italy; so I was unable to see most of the Netherlands. I just enjoy being away from usual life (which is very rare), so almost anywhere different seems beautiful to me.

Dont worry, it wasn't nessesarily the "De wallen" that appealed to me most.

LOL that's not what I meant. I'm just surprised that whenever people talk about a foreign country they have been to being beautiful, they refer to the marvels cities there.
I cannot understand why anybody would find them beautiful..
To me the beautiful of a country is directly related to the nature there.

I saw a little of the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam. Those windmills add a very scenic effect. I really could have stayed longer and gone to different places, but keep in mind that I was traveling with a lot of my realtives and in addition to that, I'm only 16. Since I had very little influence on where my relatives were going, I just made the most out of it. :o

The Netherlands has some nice places but there are lots and lots of countries that I think are more beautiful.. maybe it's because I grew up here and I don't see it anymore.

These ones are quite fun - I took them with nothing more fancy than a phone camera pointed down the eyepiece of a microscope.

they are crab larvae - the first one is masked crab: Corystes cassivelaunus

and the second is a common shore crab Carcinus Maenas

if people want to make money in photography they better take pictures of something totally exquisite...not just squirrels in the park or flowers or even insects...nope...they need to go crawl into caves and take picture high definition of lets say bats with closed eyes...they need to take pictures of the flowing waters in North Pole and Greenland ice shelf lakes...

Oh...the second one is much better. Much more contrast...and the greens and yellows of the images just pop on the black background. I actually like the font and logo in the header of the first one..the second header, IMHO, needs something to fill the empty space on either side of the text...like your little logo thing...and maybe a different background color that blends more with the greens and yellows of the images, and beige of the text headers.

But what the fuck do I know...I'm just a computer tech. :)

I think the best thing to do is use my sciforum's avatar, and tile it, and use that as your background..as this would obviously increase site traffic by several orders of magnitude. :) j/k

The more I look at it...the more I am amazed by the difference in just switching from a white to black background and removing the grey bars makes. My eye is drawn more toward the images...and hey...the images are what it's all about...right? :) Even though I'm looking at the exact same image in both windows, the one on the black background seems to have more brilliant color.

Just a thought...what about going with a grey header background, to keep all of the color in the images?

Edit:

That reminds me of a joke.

A young native American boy approached his father and asks him: "Father, from where do I get my name?"

The father replied "After your grandfather was born, the first thing his father saw was an eagle flying in the sky...and so he named his son "Soaring Eagle". When I was born, the first thing my father saw was a deer running through the forest, and he gave me the name "Running Deer". Does this answer your question, son?"

The son replied: "Yes, father."

"Good, now go finish your chores, Two Dogs Humping." :)

I've heard more people say that. However the majority thinks black looks better, especially for a photo website.
I have been thinking of toning down the bright white text a bit.. that might help a bit I guess.
Anyway, I think I'll stick with the black background. Thanks for your input though :)

Ms. Bug is lovely (or Lil' Bug). That's also adorable!

Well there were still only brown ones, so it's a fair assumption that some of them were juvenile males.
The blue ones are never as abundant though, but I like their coloring better :)

It seems to be an odd time for them.. although I have no clue whether or not they grow all year round.
I know a spot where some Amanita's grow in the middle of the winter (if it's not too cold). I think they are gemmata's, but I haven't made a definitive ID though.

Pic 14 was near a sandy walking trail through an open area in the remote woodland. The camera is a 7 megapixel HP Photosmart.

Can you identify the mushroom that looks like an open upside down umbrella (pics 4 and 5)? Those were in my lawn this morning.

i've been thinking for some time now of buying an Olympus ultra zoom semi-pro 550..its 18X zoom was hard to resist..and it's price is about 300$..it's lowest ISO was 80..very tempting too..though i'm not sure if it's any good in other stuff..what do you think??
other choices are the panasonic tz-15 and tz-10..slimmer than the Olympus..but less zoom..

Well, I've just bought the Nikon P90. It has 24x zoom, 12 MP, and macro from 1cm to infinity. And it cost me 350 euro. Oh, and lowest ISO is 64.
I'm not sure what the current exchange rate is, but I guess it's about 1.4 ?
If so, the Nikon will cost you about $490.

I'm in Europe though and it isn't going to clear up anytime soon here I'm afraid. How is the weather looking. It is the night of Dec. 13 EST, but Dec 14, ~5:00 UT. I don't know when that is for you; take some hot chocolate out with you (laced with whiskey).

http://skytour.homestead.com/met2009.html

GEMINIDS
Predicted Maximum: December 14, ~5:00 UT (=Dec. 13, 9pm PST; =Dec. 14, 12am EST)
Moon: New Moon (no interference)
(radiant map from IMO)

WHEN TO WATCH: The Geminids have a fairly broad maximum, so viewing should be productive throughout the entire night of December 13/14 (late Sunday evening into Monday morning). New Moon this year allows coverage of the entire night.

Sunday morning, December 13, should be worth watching as well. A rule of thumb for the Geminids is that rates remain above half the maximum value for about 24 hours before and 12 hours after the actual peak. While rates will probably have dropped dramatically by Monday evening, an increase in the proportion of bright meteors is often noted after the peak.

The Geminids are accessible from the entire Northern Hemisphere and from many Southern Hemisphere locations as well. The radiant is highest in the sky at around 2am, but from mid-northern latitudes it is at a decent elevation from around 10pm until the beginning of morning twilight. The Geminids can produce observed rates of over 100/hour at maximum, and are reliable (for a meteor shower) as well as spectacular.

Geminids are medium-speed meteors. Most of them don't leave glowing trains, but the brighter ones are often colored (yellow, green and blue are most common). The Geminids seem to produce quite a few fireballs.

I have just been outside filming for the greater part of an hour and I have seen two meteors. One big one right when I stepped outside, which I missed because I didn't have my camera set up yet, and one that was barely visible. I missed that last one as well because I had my camera aimed at another part of the sky.
On top of that it's -2 degrees Celsius (28.4F) out! I'm sorry but I stopped trying. *frostbite*

I love watching for meteorites but it does require focus and patience. Plan to keep your eye on the sky at all times :bugeye:.
