View Full Version : Disinhibition

Why is that certain emotions, states of mind, or chemicals disinhibit modes of communication? I ask based on my own experiences as I cannot read other's minds.

For example: if I am anger or bitter, I am much more likely to "not care" about being an inconsiderate asshole. I might cut in a line, get a sales clerk in trouble for not assisting me, or hit on a guy's girlfriend right in front of him.

If I am euphoric, I will be the nice guy. I'm everyone's friend and I'm VERY gregarious.

Under normal living, I'm generally the nice guy that keeps to himself.

Now, if I drink alcohol.. the expected disinhibition happens... I'm more open and unafraid to do anything, really. (though, I read that this might just be a placebo effect).

Are there certain neurotransmitters responsible for all of this?

I'm more curious about anger than anything else. In a fit of rage I get a sense of satisfaction throwing my cell phone against my dashboard, flicking people off, or acting like a hardass. I can't do any of this as my usual self.... I feel too inhibited and think too much about the consequences.

Why does anger or rage disinhibit?

Why does anger or rage disinhibit?

Emotions tend to lessen or inhibit rational reasoning and logical thought.

Why? Hell, it's gonna' take a smarter man than me to figure that out. I do, however, believe that strong emotions like fear and anger are self-preservation instincts in humans probably from a long, long time ago. In difficult, dangerous situations, there's sometimes little or no time to reason out some logical steps or path.

If a couple of large saber-tooth tigers are charging you, it's best to get the fuck outta' the way instead taking the time to reason out logical, rational steps to take.

...Why does anger or rage disinhibit? The Baron's answer is quite good.

Anger and rage are associated with non-cortical centers deep in the interior of the brain. Some years ago this part of the brain was called "the reptilian brain" as it is not much changed from the age of the reptiles, but modern neuroscientists do not like that term.

That old structure is the origin of the "fight or flight" response, and as the Baron said - it sort of takes control of your behavior, when anger or rage it is producing is strong. Again as the baron said: It judges that best not to let the later evolved cortical structures delay the response. Usually a wise decision in the primitive world, where that response system evolved. Now, in the modern, lawyer-filled, world that take over is usually dysfunctional (except for the lawyers. :D)

The “take over” blocks the inhibition that mainly is coming from the frontal cortex. Thus the blocking of this inhibition is your “disinhibition.”

When this happens you have lost your "self control" and no longer are really your "normal" self as you have said. That would mean that you cannot drink to much or this will continue to happen and will end you up in jail one day soon. If you already understand that drinking does this to you then just STOP drinking.Alcohol really fucks up some people and they cannot control themselves and can great harm to others and themselves....you are one of those types.

You can sometimes get high on a state of anger as you would from something happy, I assume because of a high adrenaline/noradrenaline level.

It's sketchy, but it's there.

I stopped drinking because of this. I just get too out of control. I've been lucky to stay out of jail so far, so I've decided not to push it.

Very true - I was just pointing out the fact that anger can sometimes actualkly be satisfying or intoxicating because of the release of adrenaline, noradrenaline etc.

. . . or hit on a guy's girlfriend right in front of him

There is an expression which is likely to be valid in many cases: In Vino Veritas. I may have spelled it wrong. A literal interpretation is: In Wine there is truth.

The loving husband who only beats his wife when he is drunk is basically an abusive spoise. When sober, he does not have an excuse for his behavior. Similarly, the peaceful fellow who only starts fights when he is drunk is basically a bully.

I have seen lots of examples in my life time. I am sure that others here have seen examples.

It really depends.
Sometimes it gives you the chance to break a bottle and wave it threateningly.

... break a bottle and wave it threateningly. On airplanes flights from Brazil to USA, I usually have at least one small glass bottle of wine. I also get quietly angry again about the time my tiny, keychain, pocket knife was confiscated by the security people, who were just doing their job, so not angry at them.

I am angry at the stupidity of the system. That knife's tiny blade was less than 1.5 inches long - I could do much more damage with the wine bottle they served me, if I wanted to hurt someone. Good I never have more than two bottles or dis-inhibited, who knows what I might do to seats etc.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that this happens when I drink. I'm euphoric when I drink...

I was trying to show a connection between different states of mind creating disinhibited actions.

I've never been pissed off while I drank... I was either extremely happy or extremely depressed. Also, I drink once every few months.

The hijackers that flew into the Twin Towers used box cutters with blades about that length.

Did you know, Billy, that when someone cuts your throat with a 1.5 inch knife, you're in a little bit of trouble.

Why does anger or rage disinhibit?
I don't think they disinhibit. They are motivation to express things that your inhibitions can no longer quell.
