View Full Version : Does anyone golf?
I have recently gone golfing and found it quite fun. I then went with my friend (the same one that turned Christian, if anyone read that thread) to a driving range, I am a bit inconsistent, but I put a couple over 300 yards. it was great fun.
anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew what the most important clubs were. I can find cheap clubs, but not in any kind of a set. so if anyone knows what I should get, I'll keep my eyes open for them.
I would guess:
driver (got it. its called a killer whale =] )
putter (duh)
7-iron (most common club)
pitching wedge (also common)
what else should I get? do you think I should get another wood? like a 5?
remember, I am just a beginner. in fact, I have never player anything but a par 3 course.
any help would be great, thanks.
I've played golf before. Personally, I find it boring, though it can be fun with good friends. Gives time to talk, relax, and I love the little carts:D My opinion is to get a starter set, don't go to cheap, but don't go expensive (in case you change your mind.) If you think you may continue playing golf, you may want to try out differnent clubs, and see what you hit best with, and maybe concentrate on getting those clubs. Good luck with golf
Godless 06-25-05, 01:45 AM I had too, so I hate it.
My dad used to make me play golf, I was a ten year old kid. He had a friend who's son played golf, and wanted me to follow the same footsteps. I developed hate for the game. I don't play golf, Tennis anyone?

On a par three course, you shouldn't need a driver. I occasionally go to a local pitch and putt where every hole is a par three and they supply a putter, sand wedge, pitcher and a 9 iron.
Golf can be very enjoyable, but also extremely frustrating!
This web-site offers lots of help with golf clubs and rules etc.

I know that. its like 100yards to the hole, I drive a ball 200-300yards =]. I was thinking of moving up to the next level though.
p.s that site is not very helpful.
certified psycho 06-25-05, 03:54 PM Does mini golfing count???
no, mini golf does not count, because I am asking about which clubs to buy. you only need one club in mini golf.
Frank King 06-26-05, 04:58 AM i love golf, it is the only true game th=at you are playing yourself in and is not all about strength
Jeremirroer 06-26-05, 05:13 AM i love golf, it is the only true game th=at you are playing yourself in and is not all about strength
What about darts?
or Solitaire?
Frank King 06-26-05, 05:20 AM out door game i do apologies for not putting that in although i really do think you are grasping for straws jolly
Jeremirroer 06-26-05, 05:28 AM I believe it is "grasping AT straws" not "grasping for straws".
What about snowboarding or skiing. That really is just about testing your own limits.
or spear fishing?
or boomerang throwing?
or horse riding?
Frank King 06-26-05, 05:30 AM strength, strength and more strength, are you some sort of strong girl or something
Jeremirroer 06-26-05, 05:33 AM you didn't say that you didn't use strength. you said it was not all about strength. Most if not all of those are about skill primarily. spear fishing hardly requires strength.
Who do you think can hit a ball further in golf?
Men or women?
Children or adults?
Clearly strength is involved in golf.
Frank King 06-26-05, 05:36 AM i think you have missed the train to no one gives a fuck what you have to say jolly rodger
Jeremirroer 06-26-05, 05:42 AM what the heck is your problem?
grow a brain.
Frank King 06-26-05, 05:52 AM have some respect for once. There is nothing cool about abuseing everyone you encounter
TheAcridApe 06-26-05, 06:50 AM I usually only golf on the driving range and attempt to hit the ball pick up guy. Also to try to hit it as far as I possibly can. That is fun. My buddy hit a goose once and we felt really bad. But it flew away.
yeah, I smashed a few out about 300 yeards, that was cool. but there was no ball pickup guy, so I could not hit him.
I got some clubs.

I think that is it, they are out in my trunk. I forget, but all together I spent exactly $30 on them (including a bag). I still need some wedges, but I think it is a good start, I can always use my 9 instead of a PW.
thecollage 06-26-05, 10:05 PM yeah i golf. you really should start off with the fundamentals. i dont care what clubs you have. all i care about is your grip and you should too. if your grip is wrong then you will develop a bad habits. after a while of this nonsense you will have to spend all this time trying to correct your grip and become comfortable with it all over again.
practice your grip and get it straight.
then go to the range and hit the ball. if you are hitting a ball 300 with a slice you are either full of shit or hitting the fuck out of the thing. if you correct that then you could drive 350 or further. if you can do that then you will do pretty well getting out of the box.
now go practice your grip.
cosmictraveler 06-26-05, 10:21 PM I tried it once a long time ago but found out stuff that made me leave the game. I really didn't realize the expenses involved such as the country club fees to join up every year. Where I went they wanted over $2,000.00 US per year to play golf at their country club. The amount of fertilizer they used polluted the lakes that were adjacent to the country club. You had to use a golf cart so that you would be able to play faster to make the roundgo quickly which cost over 20.00 US. You had to pay a start time fee to insure that you would be there at a designated time to play your round. You had to play with at least 3 other people so that foursomes were the norm even if you didn't want others with you.
Ya, consider my dad made me go with him... I forgot about the expensives. Really, I just don't like it though, because my dad ruined it for me. He tried to get me to do everything perfect when playing golf. So it just got less fun, and then he made me take golfing classes (which I quit after like, 3 weeks:D) and then just... ya. Its fun every now and then, as long as its still fun.
if you are hitting a ball 300 with a slice you are either full of shit or hitting the fuck out of the thing.
no, with the slice I only go like 200. but when I hit it straight I can get over 300.
p.s. I think my grip is ok. moreover, I have gone to 3 different martial arts schools, now that is hard to get used to. if I can get used to a different martial art, I am sure a golf grip would not be too bad.
p.s. does anyone know how to get rid of a hook to the right? a lot of my drives make a half parabola kind of thing.
:D I Love the Game,, been playing since I was 9yo, sorry I left it for a while during the 70's and early 80's... I had an Uncle on the Pro Tour in the late 50's and early 60's.. Other Uncles were quite good and Loved the game as well. I recall seeing the ball leave the tee with a whistle after the smack and take a tragetory that was amazing..
The Key to curing a hook is recognizing the cause. If you are smashing the ball as you describe, 300 yards is a smash, your left arm is closing the face of the club as you connect, ie. turning the top of the head to the left, as you bring in your follow thru. If a hook is consistant then you might try to open the face of the Driver to the right at the top of your approach. Meaning that when you sit silent at the ball, and you want to square your club face to your direction, adjust the club face more to the right, much like this slash mark,, /////,, that way when you connect with the ball it will compensate for your left arm closing the club face and the direction will propell the ball in a straighter line... Hooks and slices are an advantagious understanding of the game as much as english is to Billiards.. The comparison is quite significant..
For some reason, my long range club is a 3 wood and I find that I get a better line from the tee with a 3 or 4,,, I also chip with a 7 iron more often than a chipping wedge unless I need the height to get over an obstacle, sand trap or water hazard. You may smash a #1Driver, but you also might find that you can achieve a bit more control with a wood that has a higher trajectory.
Consistancy is the Name of the Game, That is why there is so much money that is paid out to the Winners,,, hehehehe... Good Luck,, and have some Fun out there,,
yeah, I went to the range today, and I was more consistent with the 3. however, I would like to learn to control my "killer whale" 9-degree driver. I would love to be consistently over 300, that would be awesome.
I was still curving them to the right with my 1W, but I think your advise helped some.
All righty then,,, Your interest in distance is an aspect of the long game, you mentioned that you were playing the Par 3's right now, and some of those are a great learning tool. While a killer drive from the tee, while playing a game is significant, a chip and putt might make the hole closer to birdie. The Key to success in golf. What is your Goal?
I was still curving them to the right with my 1W, but I think your advise helped some.
Then you are still pulling your left shoulder as you drive through... your head/chin is moving ahead of the ball...
hmmm, ok, I will try that tomorrow. the driving range is like 100+ balls for $8, so I can practice a lot =].
what do you mean pulling? what direction should I not be pulling my sholder? back?
I went to the range today. it started out great! my first hit went about 270 yards! I think I got a few past 300, but its hard to tell at the range I go to, they only mark out to 250. however, there is a tree at about 260 that I hit a few times.
overall I did better than normal, but as time went on it got gradually worse, probably because it was a million degrees out there. I tried a new grip I found on the net. I like it, you interlock your right pinkie with your left index finger, it felt comfortable.
