Just a few as I wander through my library. But those are for another topic.

Being Alone Together - David and David

Kingdom of Rain - The The with Sinead O'Connor

The Sinking Feeling - The The

All my books lay on the table
Waitin' to unfold
I sit and stare at my reflection
While the darkness chills my bones
My head fills like a junk shop
In desperate need of repair
The path of least resistance leads to the
Garbage heap of despair
I think I'd better get back in bed

I'm just a symptom of the moral decay
That's gnawing at the heart of the country
(x2)

You can't destroy your problems
By destroying yourself
Death is not the answer
For your soul may burn in hell
My memory my fond deceiver
Is turning all my past into pain
While I'm being raped by progress
Tomorrow's world is here to stay
They wouldn't have it any other way

I'm just a symptom of the moral decay
That's gnawing at the heart of the country.

Kom susser todd.
I don't know who it's by, but you have to hear it. We have decided it is officially one of the most depressing songs known to mankind. The strange thing is that the music isn't really all that depressing sounding. Its kinda poppy, almost slightly upbeat. But, if you pay attention to the lyrics, its one of those songs that you wind up listening to over and over again. After about an hour you are left with this feeling...like you just wan tot die, but that wouldn't fix anythign either. LIke everythign is completely pointless. You have to hear it.

My all-time favorite depressing song:

Beck's classic: "I'm a Loser Baby so why don't you kill me"

"In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey
butane in my veins so i'm out to cut the junkie
with the plastic eyeballs, spray paint the vegetables
dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose
kill the headlights and put it in neutral
stock car flamin' with a loser and the cruise control
baby's in Reno with the vitamin D
got a couple of couches sleep on the love seat
someone keeps sayin' I'm insane to complain
about a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt
don't believe everything that you breathe
you get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve
so shave your face with some mace in the dark
savin' all your food stamps and burnin' down the trailer park
(yo cut it)
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
(double-barrel buckshot)
Soy un perdedor
i'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?
Forces of evil in a bozo nightmare
banned all the music with a phony gas chamber
'cuz one's got a weasel and the other's got a flag
one's got on the pole shove the other in a bag
with the rerun shows and the cocaine nose job
the daytime crap with the folksinger slop
he hung himself with a guitar string
slap the turkey neck and it's hangin' on a pigeon wing
you can't write if you can't relate
trade the cash for the beef for the body for the hate
and my time is a piece of wax fallin' on a termite
who's chokin' on the splinters
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
(get crazy with the cheeze whiz)
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
(drive-by body pierce)
(yo bring it on down)
soooooooyy....
(I'm a driver I'm a winner things are gonna change I can feel it)
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
(I can't believe you)
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
[repeat]
(Sprechen sie Deutches, baby)
Soy un perdedor
I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me?
(Know what I'm sayin'?)

Favorite part:

things are gonna change I can feel it!

Let's see, depressing songs:

Burzum- Det Som Engang Var: the ultimate ambient black metal epic. A lush archaic melody plays against a wall of static guitar, followed by a violent outburst of ear shattering screams. The voice is both horrific and mournful, as if the singer himself were crying for a spiritual holocaust in some time before our time. A painful narration about the death of Norse culture at the hands of Christians.

Emperor- Towards The Pantheon: A simply dank and downright cold musical landscape is constructed by the genius that is Emperor. Perfectly capturing some romantic vision of a dark past, the band guides the listener through a damned but majestic journey through the mind.

Immortal- Sun No Longer Rises: Your blood will freeze in your veins as Immortal guides their victims through moody warped guitar riffs that are barely listenible in the cloud of drums.

Gorguts- Nostalgia: As nihilistic in composition as the subject matter, Gorguts presents a post-moral vision of the universe, playing their primal music out in ultra-technical jazz-like compositions. It doesn't really depress me, but the fatalism behind it is a bit defeating.

I gotta laugh! (what else should I do?) The easy way out is to take offense and get all defensive and shit.

I'm a Matrix junkie—despite all reason I still love the series. A song from Evanescence just hit me in a way that related to the movie and I latched onto it internally.

It's like watching a commercial and being really pissed off that the commercial touches you in an emotional way because it's so obviously contrived to do just that. But I still think about that commercial (whatever) from time to time 'Excuse me, there's something in my eye!' and so I'm linked irrevocably with that damn ad. Same with music. If it causes emotions to well up inside, I'm as good as dead for going out and listening to it.

Yeah, tons of other sheeple listen to it as well; doesn't stop me, even though tons of other people think it should. Someone says it's shit and another non-conformist chimes in. 'Course it'd be easy saying something they're into is shit and about as subtle as a brick in the face, but then I wouldn't understand the connection it has with them.

Thanks <b>and200x</b>! My music is quite brootal. About Jesus ... Did the name tag clue you in or something?

and2000x
11-13-03, 06:40 PM
Sounds like same old tired leftism: "I'm not a sheeple, I'm different, I don't fit in yo, I'm part of the OTHER crowd. I shop at Hot Topic, because it is a store for rebels and TrVe metal heads. Don't judge other people's tastes, because accepting everyone and everything is the brutal thing to do." Yawn.

and2kx, your thinking is as outmoded as your moniker. That's the thing. I'm not saying I'm not a sheeple, I'm saying in this respect that I <i>am</i>. I <i>do</i> fit in. I <i>am</i> one of the crowd.

<i>Yawn</i>??? Now you get it. You're a sheeple just like me. Two peas in a pod! People conform just as much to non-conformity as they do with the 'crowd'.

That's the great thing about people like you (and you're really everywhere no matter how much you may tell yourself differently when you look in the mirror) every way, but your way, is the wrong/leftist/brvtal way. But the truly great thing is that this, in reality, <b>includes</b> your way of thinking.

And where do you hang out if it's not Hot Topic? Playing pocket pool online? 'Hey everyone, take a gander at me. See how I'm <i>not</i> stepping foot into Hot Topic? I'm so kewl.'

God, man, you're probably one of those people that's watched Seinfeld or Simpsons and laughed. Oh wait, so's everyone else.

Nature favors competition, not conformity. Of course I am a sheep, we all are at some point. Did I say I wasn't? From your selection of words, you come off sounding like an egalitarian.

It may surprise you young sprouts to know that there was depressing music before Goth and Industrial Rock.

Absolutely anything by Hank Williams, for starters!

Songs about the sad, mad state of the world are depressing, but there's still nothing that beats a broken heart for sheer downness.

"Long, Long Time," by Linda Ronstadt. "I Fall to Pieces," by Patsy Cline.

To pick one that's not about broken hearts that hasn't gotten a lot of attention so you might not know about it, there's Aimee Mann's tune, "Jacob Marley's Chain." A nice depressing look at the world.

Some of the Classic Rock that's always on the air is really downbeat. Have you ever really listened to the lyrics to "Hotel California"? "Stairway to Heaven" is not exactly upbeat pop either. Or back to the sixties, Kris Kristofferson was the king of depression: "Me and Bobby McGee," which is really an allegory about the sixties coming to an end, not just losing a girlfriend, and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," an ode to a really bad day that never ever ends because the world sucks.

Hey, don't knock Evanescence! I don't know that I agree with the observation that people think they're deep. People think they're depressing, and that's what this thread is about.

And if you're up for (down for?) a symphonic-length oeuvre of depression, check out Richard Strauss's "Metamorphoses." We went to a live performance of it in L.A., where audiences are notoriously rude and noisy and clap in all the wrong places. When the piece came to an end there was absolute silence for several minutes. Six thousand people just sat there stunned.

Depressing songs? Well, I got a lot of them, the most depressing are the songs from Sentenced I suppose. I will just post one song then:

2. Noose

[music: Tenkula & Sentenced, lyrics: Lopakka]

No way out of your misery
Alone in pain and agony
Lay depressed and hollow
One thought in your mind
-No Tomorrow

And then you had made up your mind
and thought it was your time
You left this world without shedding a tear
without hope, without fear

So you thought you'd just put your head
into the Noose and let it all go...and so you did
Oh yeah, you did

Now you come haunting every night
Calling my name until I...
wake up feeling this sorrow
One thought in my mind
- I will follow

I'll drink the booze to depress myself
then I take the rope and express myself
I'll leave this world without shedding a tear
without hope, without fear

Yeah, I think I'll put my head
into the Noose and let it all go...and so I will
Oh yeah, I will

I'll take the rope, just like you
and wherever you are, I'll be too

I think I'll just put my head
into the Noose and let it all go...and so I will
Oh yeah, I will

(Sentenced, album: Down)

For some odd reason I find the piano part in Final Fantasy VI (yes, the old SNES game) to be rather poignant. I am a coniseur of much classical music, but for some reason I find this particular videogame to have one of the sadder songs on the earth. For something so minimal it carries so much weight.

No one has said anything by Evanescence, have they?Oh yes. They're on here at least twice. If the topic were "favorite depressing album" instead of "song," I'd certainly have put Evanescence up near the top of my list, alongside almost any album by Hank Williams, Sandy Denny, and the original Black Sabbath.

Yes, Tori Amos just has the touch for depressing songs and bizzare effects.
From Little Earthquakes, I'll add "Me and a gun" -- just the voice, no instruments, horrible, as if it happened right there, everytime you hear the song. This song is the most painfully depressing I know.

StarOfEight, you also think that Civil War is depressing? I know a few people that disagree becuase the song is "too fast". I always tell them to pay attention to the lyrics.

Here's some depressing songs, I know that I will most likely repeat some:

Guns n' Roses-
November Rain
Estranged

Collective Soul-World I know

Yoko Kanno-Blue (It's on Cowboy Bebop's last episode, it's the closing theme)

Sara Brightman-Eden

Led Zeppelin-
Stairway to Heaven
All of my love

Radiohead takes the cake for having the most depressing songs. What's even better is that they always change thier sound, so it's also more unique. Here's my huge Radiohead list by album:

Pablo Honey-
Creep (obvious)

The Bends-
High and Dry
Fake Plastic Trees
Bulletproof... I wish I was
Street Spirit (fade out)

OK Computer-
Subterranean Homesick Alien
Exit Music (For A Film)
Let Down
Karma Police
Lucky
The Tourist

Kid A-
How to Disappear Completely

Amnesiac-
Pyramid Song
Knives out
I might be wrong
hunting bears

Hail to the thief-
Sail to the moon

When you hear the begining of Paranoid Android, it sounds like one of the most depressing song you've ever heard... then the song changes tempo, and you realize that the lyrics don't make sense. :p It's still one of my favorite songs, it just could've been a lot more depressing. :(

Nah, I never thought "Everybody hurts" to be a depressing song. It is one of those "buck up" songs, like Natalie Merchant's "Life is sweet".
I usually cry when I hear them, but I also stop crying at the end of the song. Now, there's a productive approach to sadness!

I have phases of being addicted to depressing or chillout music and I've found the best ones for me are.......

Everytime - Britney Spears
When Day Turns Into Night - Busted
Strange & Beautiful - Aqualung
** Passenger Seat - Death Cab For Cutie **
** Consequence - The Notwist **
Always - Zug Izland
** By Your Side - Sade **
My Immortal - Evanescence
Songbird - Eva Cassidy
I Miss You - Blink 182
Breathe Easy - Blue
Dice - Finlay Quaye ft. William Orbit & Beth Orton

** = Definitely worth downloading!!!

NB - Not all these are strictly depressing cos the lyrics are quite positive but since I'm single I have my "hating couples" days so these type of songs depress me and also the background music is slow and good for chilling out and thinking.

Loving this thread, I'm always on the hunt for random music especially depressing songs and I've found some great songs thanks to everyone who's posted so thanks!! :D

"Something Blue" by the Deadly Nightshade, a three-woman band with a militant feminist outlook, ca. 1973.

Here it is: the day that I'm a woman, so I'm told.
The day I give myself away, to have and to hold.
I will soon be wearing all the things I've gathered here
In hopes they'll bring me happiness through the coming years.

Something old: this wedding ring my mother gave to me.
Something new: this pretty dress for all my friends to see.
A borrowed handkerchief to dry the tears that come down from my eyes.
Yes, I've got everything, you see: the "something blue" is me.

When I listened to that Hailey Jade song (Mocking Bird), tears really did stream down my cheeks.
Like when he says:

I know things might be hard for you....but what you cryin' about? You got me...."

.....I can see your sad when you laugh when you sigh deep inside you wanna cry I'm not there Daddies with you in your prayers no more nightmares wipe them tears.......

I remember back one year when Daddy had no money Mommie wrapped the Christmas presents up and stuck 'em under the tree cause Daddy couldn't buy 'em, I'll never forget that Christmas, I sat up the whole night Cryin'

Thornley - Beautiful

I am listening to The Scorpions - Still Loving You and I get reminded of the trip I took to Washington DC with my class last summer. On the way home I listened to this song on repeat all night. I didn't want to sleep on the bus so I listened to music, but I got hooked on this song. I think I probably listened to it about 50 times that night. Another song that reminds me of that trip is Comfortably Numb. When I went on family vacations, we'd always drive home over night and my dad would listen to a lot of Pink Floyd. Comfortably Numb reminds me a lot of those times. Great memories.

Goodbye to You - Michelle Branch

Yeah, I can be a pansy sometimes. So what? Fuck you.Hey, nobody gets as down and depressing as many of these lightweight girl singers. I love Aimee Mann's shortie, "Jacob Marley's Chain."

Well today a friend told me this sorry tale
As he stood there trembling and turning pale.
He said, "Each day's harder to get on the scale,
Sort of like Jacob Marley's chain."

Now it's not that life is such a vale of tears.
It's just full of thoughts that act as souvenirs
Of those tiny blunders made in yesteryears
That comprise Jacob Marley's chain.

- Well I had a little metaphor to state my case.
- It encompassed the condition of the human race.
- But to my dismay it left without a trace,
- All except for the sound of Jacob Marley's chain.

Now there's no more story left for me to tell,
So I think I'll just be heading straight for Hell,
Where there's a snowball's chance that the personnel
Will have to carry Jacob Marley's chain.

Guns N' Roses - November Rain

"When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same

'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain...."

Oooh, November Rain is a good one.

Another good one that I was just listening to is AFI - The Leaving Song.

The vocals are so beautiful. It reminds me of Close Yet Far by CKY (which is graet too) only it's more soothing.

Richard Strauss: Metamorphoses. This is entirely instrumental, written for a strangely configured small orchestra. All strings, but each instrument plays a solo part. Strauss was a "traditional" composer, there's no backbeat or saxophones here, but this is not "classical" music.

It was his eulogy to Germany, written at the end of WWII. Strauss loved Germany but came to despise what it became under the Nazis. He recognized that the loss of the war -- although appropriate -- meant that the Germany he knew was dead.

I once saw this piece performed live. It ends rather quietly. A long time passed before anyone in the audience made a sound. We were all sitting there with pained expressions.

Yup, this is really depressing music.

I HATE depressing songs and my worst has to be 'God is watching us' by Bette Midler followed by that theme from the Titanic .

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye

Yeah, beautiful song! Good taste ;)

Someone might have mentioned Eva Cassidy already (sorry - haven't checked the entire thread), but her interpretation of Fields of Gold is simply divine.

Coldplay have a number of beautifully poignant songs as well! As do Live.

I listen to lots of sombre classical music as well: Mozart's Requiem anyone? - slightly macabre I guess. Or Palestrina's Canticum Canticorum Salomonis (a musical interpretation of Solomon's The Song of Songs) - didn't think so! Despite the aversion that some people might feel in relation to the lyrical content, there is a transcendental element in the music.

(I'll have to come back this later - there are so many beautiful songs out there.)

Personally, I like to divide my depressing music into categories.

Heartache:

Konstantine - Something Corporate
Blackbird - The Beatles
Epiphany - Staind
Last Train - Lostprophets
Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright
Come Around - Rhett Miller

And to that list you can pretty much add anything off of "From Here to Infirmary" by The Alkaline Trio.

Death:

Angel - Sarah McLachlan
Dust in the Wind - Kansas
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton

Hopelessness:

Suicide is Painless - Johnny Mandel
Mad World - Gary Jules
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Requiem - Mozart
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

Family:

Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
Emotioneless - Good Charolette (Yeah, I know, but honestly, I don't think I've heard a song that described so perfectly my own relationship with my father)

Addiction:

Not an Addict - K's Choice
Turn Around - Bonnie Tyler

And that good ol', "The Whole World Sucks" category:

Sunday Blood Sunday - Either U2's version, or the version by Evergreen Terrace
Heaven is Falling - The one good song the Ataris ever did; which shouldn't come as a surprise, since it was a Bad Religion cover

And in the "Sad but Hopeful" category:

You're Not Alone - Nobuo Uematsu
Hold on Hope - Guided by Voices

Sweetness Follows- R.E.M.
Pyramid Song- Radiohead
Cave- Muse
Free to Go- Folk Implosion
Sad Peter Pan- Smashing Pumpkins
Leslie Anne Levine- Decemberists
Bad Diary Days & Bad Things to Such Good People- Pedro the Lion
Trailer Trash- Modest Mouse

The winner of most depressing song: Hurt, which appears 9 times (once per pages, it seems). Creep and Fake Plastic Trees have 4 apiece, and Radiohead is the agreed upon "most depressing band."

come to daddy - Aphex Twin
thirty three - The smashing pumpkins
heavy heart - You am I
hero of the day - Metallica
denial works for me - Tism > >( go aussie !, ya flammin mongrels)
comfortably numb - Pink Floyd

...and the best song for depression would have to be .....

>>> Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven

1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins has this intense, wistful vibe to it. Not quite depression, just nostalgia. If you're into that nostalgic "I love/hate my teenage years" check out Nada Surf, especially their album, Let Go.

Moonlight Sonata, a definite classic.

Yeah, a little too depressing though. Beautiful melody but it makes you feel sad even if you're in a good mood.

Yeah, a little too depressing though. Beautiful melody but it makes you feel sad even if you're in a good mood.

Not to mention, it was the song they played at my grandfather's funeral. How's that for depressing?

There is one song I didn't mention, for fear of horrible ridicule, but for some reason the final song from The Phantom of the Opera always gets me. Yeah, it's over the top, but at the end, when the phantom is singing quietly to himself then looks up pathetically and tells Christine he loves her... I always get choked up at that point.

Of course, that's probably a personal thing.

Quite honestly, I don't think anything was more depressing than Hurt. I haven't been able to hear the NIN version yet, but somehow I can't imagine it being better than Cash's.

Not checked out the whole thread but I'm sure I'm not the first to mention The Smiths

Anything of theirs would qualify I guess.

"What do we get for our trouble and pain?
Just a rented room in Whalley Range"

"I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour but heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job and then I found a job and heaven knows I'm miserable now"

and my personal Fave..

"She wants it now and she will not wait
but she's too rough and I'm too delicate"

Ect ect....:(

Powderfinger - whatever makes you happy
Staind - been awhile
Nirvana - jesus dont want me for a sunbeam (unplugged)
Bush - comedown (acoustic)
Eric Clapton - tears in heaven
Bruce Springsteen - downbound train

and yeah, at the risk of sounding like a broken record,

NIN - hurt (havent heard Cash's version)

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird. Never realized how sad this song really is.
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.

Blink 182 - "Adam's Song"

[First Verse]
I never thought I'd die alone
I laughed the loudest who'd have known
I traced the cord back to the wall
No wonder it was never plugged in at all
I took my time, I hurried up
The choice was mine, I didn't think enough
I'm to depressed, to go on
You'll be sorry when im gone

[Pre-Chorus]
I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get out

[Chorus]
Side the world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over we'd survived
I couldn't wait til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

[Second Verse]
I never thought I'd die alone I
Another six months I'll be unknown
Give all my things to all my friends
You'll never step foot in my room again
You'll close it off, board it up
Remember the time that I spilled the cup
Of apple juice, in the hall
Please tell mom this is not her fault

[Pre-Chorus]
I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get out

[Chorus]
Side the world was wide, too late to try
the tour was over we'd survived
I couldn't wait til I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

[Hold for Interlude]

[Final Pre-Chorus]
I never conquered, rarely came
Tomorrow holds such better days
Days when I can still feel alive
When I can't wait to get out

[Final Chorus]
Side the world is wide, the time goes by
The tour is over I'd survived
I can't wait, til i get home
To pass the time in my room alone

Lennon/McCartney

Eleanor Rigby, picks up the rice
in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face
that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie, writing the words
of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby, died in the church
and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt
from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

A song written by a New Yorker, after strolling through the remains of the 1939 World's Fair in 1989.

Fifty Years after the Fair
by Aimee Mann

Fifty years after the Fair,
The picture that I have is so clear.
Underneath the clouds in the air,
Rose the Trylon and the Perisphere.
That for me was the finest of scenes:
A perfect world across the river in Queens.

Fifty years after the Fair,
I drink from a different cup.
It does no good to compare,
For nothing ever measures up.
I guess just for a second we thought
That all good things would rise to the top.

- How beautiful it was: "tomorrow."
- We'll never have a day of sorrow.
- We got through the '30's, but our belts were tight.
- We conceived of a future with no hope in sight.
- We've got decades ahead of us to get it right,
- I swear. Fifty years after the Fair.

Fifty years after the Fair,
I live in Tomorrow Town.
Even on a wing and a prayer,
The future never came around.
It hurts to even think of those days.
The damage we do by the hopes that we raise.

- Repeat bridge.

Guster - Either Way

"You were almost kind, you were almost true
Don't let me see that other side of you
You have learned in time that you must be cruel
I'll have to wait to get the best of you"

Not really depressing, but it's a very thoughtful song, and it makes me feel very sad when I think about it.

Playground school bell rings again
Rain clouds come to play again
Has no one told you she's not breathing?
Hello, I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to
Hello

If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me I'm not broken
Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry

Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping
Hello, I'm still here
All that's left of yesterday

No Confidence Man - by Elliot Smith

For my tastes, this is about as wonderfully depressive as they come.

Its a very heavy song which, with only one note will make quiet.

For the kind of depressive song one can enjoy in the shower, I choose "Baby Britan", also by Elliot Smith. :p

"I Never Will Marry" by Kristin Hersh

One day as I rambled down by the seashore
The wind it did whistle and the water did roar
I heard a young girl make a pitiful sound
As she closed her pretty blue eyes
In the water to drown
I never will marry, I'll be no man's wife
I will live single all the day's of my life
The shells in the ocean will be my deathbed
The fish in deep water swim over my head
My love's gone and left me
He's the one I adore
He's gone and I never shall see him anymore
She plunged her dear body in the water so deep
She closed her pretty blue eyes in the water to sleep
I never will marry, I'll be no man's wife
I will live single all the day's of my life
The shells in the ocean will be my deathbed
The fish in deep water swim over my head

"Gloomy Sunday" by Billie Holiday

Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers
Will never awaken you
Not where the black coaches
Sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thoughts
Of ever returning you
Wouldn’t they be angry
If I thought of joining you?

Gloomy sunday

Gloomy is sunday,
With shadows I spend it all
My heart and i
Have decided to end it all
Soon there’ll be candles
And prayers that are said I know
But let them not weep
Let them know that I’m glad to go
Death is no dream
For in death I’m caressin’ you
With the last breath of my soul
I’ll be blessin’ you

Gloomy sunday

Dreaming, I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you asleep
In the deep of my heart here
Darling I hope
That my dream never haunted you
My heart is tellin’ you
How much I wanted you
Gloomy sunday

"St. James Infirmary"

I went down to St. James Infirmary
I saw my baby there
She was stretched out on a long white table
So cold, so sweet, so fair

Let her go, let her go, God bless her
Wherever she may be
She can look this wide world over
But she'll never find another sweet man like me

When I die bury me in straight lace shows
A box back coat and a Stetson hat
Put a twenty dollar gold piece on my watch chain
So the boys'll know that I died standing pat

Let her go, let her go, God bless her
Wherever she may be
She can look this wide world over
But she'll never find another sweet man like me

" You Can Run But We'll Find You " by Matchbook Romance is quite depressing as well ...

Oh ... and one more song by Placebo " Song to Say Goodbye " ( the video is really depressing)
Hmmm ... actually ... there's something about the song called " Drink You Pretty" that ... well it just makes me think.

As a big fan of System of a Down I must say that their songs " Aerials " and " Spiders" are kind of depressing ... Look at " Aerials " video if you haven't seen it yet. I felt so sorry for the boy who was in it. And his face ... It just keeps haunting me for some reason. I saw it everywhere I looked afterwards ... and sometimes I still do if I think about that song or listen to it :p And I just remembered more songs :p Here they are :

Serj Tankian - Charades
Serj Tankian - Bird of Paradise ( Gone )
Serart - Leave Melody Counting Fear
Alicia Keys - Fallin' ( I don't know why actually but this song has a power to make me cry everytime I listen to it. Maybe it's her voice's fault ... I don't know)
Korn - Coming Undone ( The best song by them, the best video by them ... just the best :p The melody isn't sad or anything ... but the words ... )
Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down ( Johnny has been mentioned a lot here ... but I didn't see this one ... )
Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
Eels - I Need Some Sleep
Eels - I'm Going to Stop Pretending That I Didn't Break Your Heart
Gorillaz - El Ma&#241;ana
Gorillaz feat. D12 - 911 ( I don't know ... maybe it's just me but the refrain just bumms me out for some reason ... )
Gorillaz - Every Planet We Reach is Dead
Gorillaz - All Alone
Gorillaz - Starshine
Massive Attack - Danny the Dog

I Don't like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

And then there's my favorite author of depressing songs, Warren Zevon :
Play it All Night Long

"Daddy's doing sister Sally, Grandma's dying of cancer now, the cattle all have Brucelosis, we'll get thru somehow..."
Desperados under the Eaves

And if California slides into the ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will; I predict this motel will be standing, until I pay my bill...
I'll Sleep when I'm Dead

"I got a 38 special, up on the shelf, if I start acting stupid, I'll shoot myself, then I'll sleep when I'm dead..."
Ain't That Pretty at All

" I'd like to go back to Paris someday and visit the Lourve Museum. Take a good running start, and hurle myself against the wall. Cause I'd rather feel bad than feel nothing at all...."
Poor, Poor Pitiful Me

I lay my head on the railroad tracks, and wait for the double E. The railroad don't run no more, poor, poor pitiful me....

Check out Alice Cooper's album, "From the Inside." I was told he made it after being committed to a mental institution. (Don't know if it was voluntary.) Bernie Taupin is credited with the lyrics. There is some really insightful stuff in there and it's all depressing.

Patti Smith's "Radio Ethiopia" album is pretty down too.

Maybe it was both, that makes sense somehow.

"They're Coming to Take Me Away" was done by Napoleon XIV in 1966 and became a staple of Dr. Demento. The lyrics are posted on all the usual lyrics websites and "Somebody let me out of here" does not appear to be part of this song. The words are unfortunately not unique enough to Google successfully.

"And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda"
by Eric Bogle
Commemorating the Australians who fought during the Battle of Galipoli during World War I

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.

And the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As the ship pulled away from the quay,
And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears,
We sailed off for Gallipoli.

And how well I remember that terrible day,
How our blood stained the sand and the water;
And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well;
He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell --
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell,
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.

But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
When we stopped to bury our slain,
Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs,
Then we started all over again.
And those that were left, well, we tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire.
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher.
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head,
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead --
Never knew there was worse things than dying.

For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda,"
All around the green bush far and free --
To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs,
No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me.

So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed,
And they shipped us back home to Australia.
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane,
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla.
And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be,
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me,
To grieve, to mourn and to pity.

But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As they carried us down the gangway,
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared,
Then they turned all their faces away.

And so now every April, I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march,
Reviving old dreams of past glory,
And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore,
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask meself the same question.

But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda,"
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday, no one will march there at all.

Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda.
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong,
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?

Skeeter Davis - End of the World

Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Irish Traditional - Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye (the basis for When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again)

While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo
While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo
While goin' the road to sweet Athy
A stick in me hand and a drop in me eye
A doleful damsel I heard cry,
Johnny I hardly knew ye.

With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and drums and guns
The enemy nearly slew ye
Oh my darling dear, Ye look so queer
Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Where are your eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your eyes that were so mild
When my heart you so beguiled
Why did ye run from me and the child
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

Where are your legs that used to run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your legs that used to run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your legs that used to run
When you went for to carry a gun
Indeed your dancing days are done
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see ye home
All from the island of Sulloon
So low in flesh, so high in bone
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg
Ye're an armless, boneless, chickenless egg
Ye'll have to put with a bowl out to beg
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again
But they never will take our sons again
No they never will take our sons again
Johnny I'm swearing to ye.

Good one... or should I say, bummer... ?

Another Eric Bogle tune-

"Green Fields of France/No Man's Land"

Well, how do you do Private William McBride?
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside?
And rest for awhile neath the warm summer sun
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done

And I see by your gravestone, you were only nineteen
When you joined the great fallen in nineteen sixteen
Well I hope you died quickly, I hope you died clean
Or poor Willy Mcbride, was it slow and obscene?

Did they beat the drums slowly?
Did they play the pipes lowly?
Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down?
And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus?
Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'?

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind?
In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined?
And though you died back in nineteen-sixteen
In that faithful heart are you always nineteen?

Or are you a stranger without a name?
Forever enshrined behind some glass pane
In an old photograph, torn and tattered, and stained.
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame.

Did they beat the drums slowly?
Did they play the pipes lowly?
Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down?
And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus?
Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'?

Well the sun's shining down on these green fields of France
The warm wind blows gently, and the red poppies dance
The trenches have vanished long under the plow
There's no gas, no barb wire, there's no guns firing now

But here in this graveyard that's still no-man's land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
The whole generation was butchered and damned

Did they beat the drums slowly?
Did they play the pipes lowly?
Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down?
And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus?
Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'?

And I can't help but wonder young Willy McBride
Do those that lie here know why that they died?
And did they really believe you when you told them the cause
Did they really believe that this war would end wars?

Well the suffering, and the sorrow, the glory of pain
The killing and dying they were all done in vain
For young Willy McBride it's all happened again,
And again, and again, and again, and again...

Did they beat the drums slowly?
Did they play the pipes lowly?
Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down?
And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus?
Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'?

Good choice, Zak.

I'll go for Gomez - Make No Sound but it's subject to change :)

Sounds a bit Pearl Jam-esque.

If you are truly depressed you don't give a rat ass about songs, any song.

Depression varies in severity. You're talking about serious clinical depression. Besides these aren't 'songs for the depressed'. They're 'depressing songs'.

Heres the lyrics to that song too.......

It was just another story printed on the second page
Underneath the Tiger's football score
It said he was only eighteen, a boy about my age
They found him face down on his bedroom floor

There'll be services on Friday at the Lawrence Funeral Home
Then out on Mooresville highway, they'll lay him 'neath a stone...

How do you get that lonely, how do you hurt that bad
To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all
Is better than the life that you had
How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go
How do you get that lonely... and nobody knows

Did his girlfriend break up with him, did he buy or steal that gun?
Did he lose a fight with drugs or alcohol?
Did his Mom and Daddy forget to say I love you son?
Did no one see the writing on the wall?

I'm not blamin' anybody, we all do the best we can
I know hindsight's 20/20, but I still don't understand...

How do you get that lonely, how do you hurt that bad
To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all
Is better than the life that you had
How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go
How do you get that lonely... and nobody knows

It was just another story printed on the second page
Underneath the Tiger's football score...

Welcome To The Jungle-Axl Rose(Actually its by GnR) It's on the "best song" poll too. This one now has the distinction of being on both threads.

At Seventeen by Janis Ian.Although many of her songs during that phase of her life were depressing, that's the best. I got to see Janis in concert once, a very good live performer.

Have you heard her comeback album, "Breaking Silence"? Apparently she was not off somewhere taking Xanax. "Guess You Had to Be There," "What about the Love," those are some really down tunes, worthy of her legacy.
