Kom susser todd. I don't know who it's by, but you have to hear it. We have decided it is officially one of the most depressing songs known to mankind. The strange thing is that the music isn't really all that depressing sounding. Its kinda poppy, almost slightly upbeat. But, if you pay attention to the lyrics, its one of those songs that you wind up listening to over and over again. After about an hour you are left with this feeling...like you just wan tot die, but that wouldn't fix anythign either. LIke everythign is completely pointless. You have to hear it. cosmictraveler 11-10-03, 02:56 PM Amazing Grace is but another that comes to mind. NEMESIS 11-10-03, 03:35 PM My all-time favorite depressing song: Beck's classic: "I'm a Loser Baby so why don't you kill me" "In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey butane in my veins so i'm out to cut the junkie with the plastic eyeballs, spray paint the vegetables dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose kill the headlights and put it in neutral stock car flamin' with a loser and the cruise control baby's in Reno with the vitamin D got a couple of couches sleep on the love seat someone keeps sayin' I'm insane to complain about a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt don't believe everything that you breathe you get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve so shave your face with some mace in the dark savin' all your food stamps and burnin' down the trailer park (yo cut it) Soy un perdedor I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me? [repeat] (Sprechen sie Deutches, baby) Soy un perdedor I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me? (Know what I'm sayin'?) Favorite part: things are gonna change I can feel it! Ozymandias 11-10-03, 10:19 PM 'Venus' from 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst. Well, at least, it starts out depressing... Yes 11-10-03, 10:47 PM Loser never seemed depressing to me, more comical. Xerxes 11-10-03, 11:48 PM Oh -- and Our Lady Peace -- 4 am The song gets ghey after you've heard it twice. testify 11-11-03, 01:24 AM Originally posted by Guyute *Sarge, We are the two biggest Incubus fans* "Give me a Amen to that" WAIT A SECOND! My love was stated since the day I have been here.:D Tonight Tonight- Smashing Pumpkins and2000x 11-12-03, 08:52 PM Whoa Pragmathen, those bands are freakin brutal. And I mean BROOOTAL. You are so KVLT! \m/ You probably worship Jesus too. apendrapew 11-12-03, 09:34 PM This Time Imperfect - AFI Polly - Nirvana End - Another Society Hurt - NIN and2000x 11-12-03, 09:59 PM Let's see, depressing songs: Burzum- Det Som Engang Var: the ultimate ambient black metal epic. A lush archaic melody plays against a wall of static guitar, followed by a violent outburst of ear shattering screams. The voice is both horrific and mournful, as if the singer himself were crying for a spiritual holocaust in some time before our time. A painful narration about the death of Norse culture at the hands of Christians. Emperor- Towards The Pantheon: A simply dank and downright cold musical landscape is constructed by the genius that is Emperor. Perfectly capturing some romantic vision of a dark past, the band guides the listener through a damned but majestic journey through the mind. Immortal- Sun No Longer Rises: Your blood will freeze in your veins as Immortal guides their victims through moody warped guitar riffs that are barely listenible in the cloud of drums. Gorguts- Nostalgia: As nihilistic in composition as the subject matter, Gorguts presents a post-moral vision of the universe, playing their primal music out in ultra-technical jazz-like compositions. It doesn't really depress me, but the fatalism behind it is a bit defeating. Xev 11-12-03, 10:21 PM Evanescence - People buy this shit and think that it's deep. This is depressing. Guyute 11-12-03, 10:42 PM Originally posted by Xev Evanescence - People buy this shit and think that it's deep. This is depressing. Amen:o testify 11-13-03, 05:00 AM Testify, I beg to differ. My love was stated since the day I have been here. Did you come here this year? I checked your stats and it says your registered in 03...I'm pretty confident in saying that my love for Incubus goes far beyond this single year. pragmathen 11-13-03, 09:50 AM I gotta laugh! (what else should I do?) The easy way out is to take offense and get all defensive and shit. I'm a Matrix junkiedespite all reason I still love the series. A song from Evanescence just hit me in a way that related to the movie and I latched onto it internally. It's like watching a commercial and being really pissed off that the commercial touches you in an emotional way because it's so obviously contrived to do just that. But I still think about that commercial (whatever) from time to time 'Excuse me, there's something in my eye!' and so I'm linked irrevocably with that damn ad. Same with music. If it causes emotions to well up inside, I'm as good as dead for going out and listening to it. Yeah, tons of other sheeple listen to it as well; doesn't stop me, even though tons of other people think it should. Someone says it's shit and another non-conformist chimes in. 'Course it'd be easy saying something they're into is shit and about as subtle as a brick in the face, but then I wouldn't understand the connection it has with them. Thanks and200x! My music is quite brootal. About Jesus ... Did the name tag clue you in or something? and2000x 11-13-03, 06:40 PM Sounds like same old tired leftism: "I'm not a sheeple, I'm different, I don't fit in yo, I'm part of the OTHER crowd. I shop at Hot Topic, because it is a store for rebels and TrVe metal heads. Don't judge other people's tastes, because accepting everyone and everything is the brutal thing to do." Yawn. sargentlard 11-13-03, 07:21 PM Originally posted by testify WAIT A SECOND! HOLD THE PHONE! Outside of school at 3.... BTW i have heard their shows are pretty cheap....in ticket sales that is. Guyute 11-14-03, 10:11 AM I'm game. pragmathen 11-14-03, 01:34 PM and2kx, your thinking is as outmoded as your moniker. That's the thing. I'm not saying I'm not a sheeple, I'm saying in this respect that I am. I do fit in. I am one of the crowd. Yawn??? Now you get it. You're a sheeple just like me. Two peas in a pod! People conform just as much to non-conformity as they do with the 'crowd'. That's the great thing about people like you (and you're really everywhere no matter how much you may tell yourself differently when you look in the mirror) every way, but your way, is the wrong/leftist/brvtal way. But the truly great thing is that this, in reality, includes your way of thinking. And where do you hang out if it's not Hot Topic? Playing pocket pool online? 'Hey everyone, take a gander at me. See how I'm not stepping foot into Hot Topic? I'm so kewl.' God, man, you're probably one of those people that's watched Seinfeld or Simpsons and laughed. Oh wait, so's everyone else. testify 11-14-03, 05:11 PM Yeah, Nebula doesn't even HAVE to be here... I can take you both on myself! "You don't want to see me mad!"... *HULKS UP*... grrrrrr and2000x 11-15-03, 11:41 AM That's the great thing about people like you (and you're really everywhere no matter how much you may tell yourself differently when you look in the mirror) every way, but your way, is the wrong/leftist/brvtal way. But the truly great thing is that this, in reality, includes your way of thinking. Nature favors competition, not conformity. Of course I am a sheep, we all are at some point. Did I say I wasn't? From your selection of words, you come off sounding like an egalitarian. Anarch 11-26-03, 03:55 AM Shatter - London After Midnight. Absolutely anything by Hank Williams, for starters! Songs about the sad, mad state of the world are depressing, but there's still nothing that beats a broken heart for sheer downness. "Long, Long Time," by Linda Ronstadt. "I Fall to Pieces," by Patsy Cline. To pick one that's not about broken hearts that hasn't gotten a lot of attention so you might not know about it, there's Aimee Mann's tune, "Jacob Marley's Chain." A nice depressing look at the world. Some of the Classic Rock that's always on the air is really downbeat. Have you ever really listened to the lyrics to "Hotel California"? "Stairway to Heaven" is not exactly upbeat pop either. Or back to the sixties, Kris Kristofferson was the king of depression: "Me and Bobby McGee," which is really an allegory about the sixties coming to an end, not just losing a girlfriend, and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," an ode to a really bad day that never ever ends because the world sucks. Hey, don't knock Evanescence! I don't know that I agree with the observation that people think they're deep. People think they're depressing, and that's what this thread is about. And if you're up for (down for?) a symphonic-length oeuvre of depression, check out Richard Strauss's "Metamorphoses." We went to a live performance of it in L.A., where audiences are notoriously rude and noisy and clap in all the wrong places. When the piece came to an end there was absolute silence for several minutes. Six thousand people just sat there stunned. PainfulBeauty 04-11-04, 11:51 PM The most depressing songs are: Mad World - Gary Jules Drive - Incubus Strawberry Gashes - Jack off Jill One More Suicide - Marcy Playground Creep - Radiohead Every you Every me - Placebo Colourblind - Counting Crows A World So Cold - Mudvayne 4 am - Our Lady Peace and finally... Well, I got a lot of them, the most depressing are the songs from Sentenced I suppose. I will just post one song then: 2. Noose [music: Tenkula & Sentenced, lyrics: Lopakka] No way out of your misery Alone in pain and agony Lay depressed and hollow One thought in your mind -No Tomorrow And then you had made up your mind and thought it was your time You left this world without shedding a tear without hope, without fear So you thought you'd just put your head into the Noose and let it all go...and so you did Oh yeah, you did Now you come haunting every night Calling my name until I... wake up feeling this sorrow One thought in my mind - I will follow I'll drink the booze to depress myself then I take the rope and express myself I'll leave this world without shedding a tear without hope, without fear Yeah, I think I'll put my head into the Noose and let it all go...and so I will Oh yeah, I will I'll take the rope, just like you and wherever you are, I'll be too I think I'll just put my head into the Noose and let it all go...and so I will Oh yeah, I will (Sentenced, album: Down) Most of their songs are like that Kunax 04-16-04, 07:04 AM Terry Jacks - Seasons in the sun sad, but not depressing, this version is slighly altered to make it warmer, the original is in French by a Belgium artis saying the last goodbye. I am a coniseur of much classical music, but for some reason I find this particular videogame to have one of the sadder songs on the earth. For something so minimal it carries so much weight. Fraggle Rocker 05-16-04, 08:21 PM No one has said anything by Evanescence, have they?Oh yes. They're on here at least twice. If the topic were "favorite depressing album" instead of "song," I'd certainly have put Evanescence up near the top of my list, alongside almost any album by Hank Williams, Sandy Denny, and the original Black Sabbath. Guyute 05-17-04, 09:43 AM For some odd reason I find the piano part in Final Fantasy VI (yes, the old SNES game) to be rather poignant. I am a coniseur of much classical music, but for some reason I find this particular videogame to have one of the sadder songs on the earth. For something so minimal it carries so much weight. If were on video game songs, then I gotta go with VII and VIII theme songs. Aeris song is very depressing considering she got killed. This is entirely instrumental, written for a strangely configured small orchestra. All strings, but each instrument plays a solo part. Strauss was a "traditional" composer, there's no backbeat or saxophones here, but this is not "classical" music. It was his eulogy to Germany, written at the end of WWII. Strauss loved Germany but came to despise what it became under the Nazis. He recognized that the loss of the war -- although appropriate -- meant that the Germany he knew was dead. I once saw this piece performed live. It ends rather quietly. A long time passed before anyone in the audience made a sound. We were all sitting there with pained expressions. Or Palestrina's Canticum Canticorum Salomonis (a musical interpretation of Solomon's The Song of Songs) - didn't think so! Yeah, it's over the top, but at the end, when the phantom is singing quietly to himself then looks up pathetically and tells Christine he loves her... I always get choked up at that point. Of course, that's probably a personal thing. Quite honestly, I don't think anything was more depressing than Hurt. I haven't been able to hear the NIN version yet, but somehow I can't imagine it being better than Cash's. DeeCee 03-22-05, 08:17 PM Not checked out the whole thread but I'm sure I'm not the first to mention The Smiths Anything of theirs would qualify I guess. "What do we get for our trouble and pain? Just a rented room in Whalley Range" "I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour but heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job and then I found a job and heaven knows I'm miserable now" and my personal Fave.. "She wants it now and she will not wait but she's too rough and I'm too delicate" Ect ect....:( Dee Cee ScRaMbLe 03-22-05, 08:22 PM Powderfinger - whatever makes you happy Staind - been awhile Nirvana - jesus dont want me for a sunbeam (unplugged) Bush - comedown (acoustic) Eric Clapton - tears in heaven Bruce Springsteen - downbound train and yeah, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, NIN - hurt (havent heard Cash's version) certified psycho 03-23-05, 06:48 PM Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird. Never realized how sad this song really is. If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be travelling on, now, 'Cause there's too many places I've got to see. But, if I stayed here with you, girl, Things just couldn't be the same. 'Cause I'm as free as a bird now, And this bird you can not change. Lord knows, I can't change. hollym101 03-24-05, 08:06 PM Title and Registration - Death Cab for Cutie War on Drugs - Barenaked Ladies Paint the Silence - South Table for Glasses - Jimmy Eat World Godless - the Dandy Warhols All of these have been on repeat when I'm feeling sad... :) Dionysos666 03-25-05, 06:49 PM Here is an unexaustive list of my favorite depressing sad songs 1. Fifty Years after the Fair by Aimee Mann Fifty years after the Fair, The picture that I have is so clear. Underneath the clouds in the air, Rose the Trylon and the Perisphere. That for me was the finest of scenes: A perfect world across the river in Queens. Fifty years after the Fair, I drink from a different cup. It does no good to compare, For nothing ever measures up. I guess just for a second we thought That all good things would rise to the top. - How beautiful it was: "tomorrow." - We'll never have a day of sorrow. - We got through the '30's, but our belts were tight. - We conceived of a future with no hope in sight. - We've got decades ahead of us to get it right, - I swear. Fifty years after the Fair. Fifty years after the Fair, I live in Tomorrow Town. Even on a wing and a prayer, The future never came around. It hurts to even think of those days. The damage we do by the hopes that we raise. - Repeat bridge. Lucas 04-02-05, 09:32 PM Edguy - Sands of time "Do you feel the sands of time Runnin' low to break the line First we learn to fly, then we learn to cry Later in the evening we will die" Jinoda 04-02-05, 09:35 PM Guster - Either Way "You were almost kind, you were almost true Don't let me see that other side of you You have learned in time that you must be cruel I'll have to wait to get the best of you" Not really depressing, but it's a very thoughtful song, and it makes me feel very sad when I think about it. foldupfreak 04-10-05, 04:04 AM Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings Prokofiev act IV Romeo & Juliet (Juliet's Death) Down with the Sickness by Disturbed Witness by Sarah McLachlan Iris by Goo Goo Dolls Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a wonderful world by Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole Arditezza 04-10-05, 12:30 PM Hello by Evanescence Playground school bell rings again Rain clouds come to play again Has no one told you she's not breathing? Oh ... and one more song by Placebo " Song to Say Goodbye " ( the video is really depressing) Hmmm ... actually ... there's something about the song called " Drink You Pretty" that ... well it just makes me think. As a big fan of System of a Down I must say that their songs " Aerials " and " Spiders" are kind of depressing ... Look at " Aerials " video if you haven't seen it yet. I felt so sorry for the boy who was in it. And his face ... It just keeps haunting me for some reason. I saw it everywhere I looked afterwards ... and sometimes I still do if I think about that song or listen to it :p And I just remembered more songs :p Here they are : Serj Tankian - Charades Serj Tankian - Bird of Paradise ( Gone ) Serart - Leave Melody Counting Fear Alicia Keys - Fallin' ( I don't know why actually but this song has a power to make me cry everytime I listen to it. Maybe it's her voice's fault ... I don't know) Korn - Coming Undone ( The best song by them, the best video by them ... just the best :p The melody isn't sad or anything ... but the words ... ) Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down ( Johnny has been mentioned a lot here ... but I didn't see this one ... ) Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine Eels - I Need Some Sleep Eels - I'm Going to Stop Pretending That I Didn't Break Your Heart Gorillaz - El Mañana Gorillaz feat. Fraggle Rocker 12-01-06, 06:00 PM "They're Coming to Take Me Away" was done by Napoleon XIV in 1966 and became a staple of Dr. Demento. The lyrics are posted on all the usual lyrics websites and "Somebody let me out of here" does not appear to be part of this song. The words are unfortunately not unique enough to Google successfully. domesticated om 12-02-06, 08:30 PM My favorite depressing music is-- anything from the album "Songs from the Big Chair" by Tears for Fears Killjoy 12-02-06, 09:00 PM "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle Commemorating the Australians who fought during the Battle of Galipoli during World War I Now when I was a young man I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover. From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback, Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over. Then in 1915, my country said, "Son, It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done." So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun, And they marched me away to the war. And the band played "Waltzing Matilda," As the ship pulled away from the quay, And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears, We sailed off for Gallipoli. And how well I remember that terrible day, How our blood stained the sand and the water; And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter. Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well; He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell -- And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell, Nearly blew us right back to Australia. But the band played "Waltzing Matilda," When we stopped to bury our slain, Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs, Then we started all over again. And those that were left, well, we tried to survive In that mad world of blood, death and fire. And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive Though around me the corpses piled higher. Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head, And when I woke up in me hospital bed And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead -- Never knew there was worse things than dying. For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda," All around the green bush far and free -- To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs, No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me. So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed, And they shipped us back home to Australia. The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane, Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla. And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay, I looked at the place where me legs used to be, And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me, To grieve, to mourn and to pity. But the band played "Waltzing Matilda," As they carried us down the gangway, But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared, Then they turned all their faces away. And so now every April, I sit on my porch And I watch the parade pass before me. And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march, Reviving old dreams of past glory, And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore, They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war And the young people ask "What are they marching for?" And I ask meself the same question. But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda," And the old men still answer the call, But as year follows year, more old men disappear Someday, no one will march there at all. Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda. Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me? And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong, Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me? Killjoy 12-03-06, 12:24 AM Irish Traditional - Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye (the basis for When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again) Good one... or should I say, bummer... ? Another Eric Bogle tune- "Green Fields of France/No Man's Land" Well, how do you do Private William McBride? Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside? And rest for awhile neath the warm summer sun I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done And I see by your gravestone, you were only nineteen When you joined the great fallen in nineteen sixteen Well I hope you died quickly, I hope you died clean Or poor Willy Mcbride, was it slow and obscene? Did they beat the drums slowly? Did they play the pipes lowly? Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down? And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus? Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'? And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind? In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined? And though you died back in nineteen-sixteen In that faithful heart are you always nineteen? Or are you a stranger without a name? Forever enshrined behind some glass pane In an old photograph, torn and tattered, and stained. And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame. Did they beat the drums slowly? Did they play the pipes lowly? Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down? And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus? Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'? Well the sun's shining down on these green fields of France The warm wind blows gently, and the red poppies dance The trenches have vanished long under the plow There's no gas, no barb wire, there's no guns firing now But here in this graveyard that's still no-man's land The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand To man's blind indifference to his fellow man The whole generation was butchered and damned Did they beat the drums slowly? Did they play the pipes lowly? Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down? And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus? Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'? And I can't help but wonder young Willy McBride Do those that lie here know why that they died? And did they really believe you when you told them the cause Did they really believe that this war would end wars? Well the suffering, and the sorrow, the glory of pain The killing and dying they were all done in vain For young Willy McBride it's all happened again, And again, and again, and again, and again... Did they beat the drums slowly? Did they play the pipes lowly? Did they bugles carry you over as they lowered you down? And did the band play 'The Last Post' in chorus? Did the pipes play 'The Flowers Of The Forest'?
