View Full Version : Game: Sock puppet hunt
Syzygys 10-16-08, 09:24 AM Hey, I came up with this game idea, in this thread let's post the NEW (so far unkown) sock puppets of old members.
I repeat, the sock puppet has to be new, let's say created after 10/1/08.
I will start: I bet White Rhino and Buffalo Roam are the same. The sure give away is when WR says that he for once agree with Spider, although he is supposed to be a new member. They also post in the same political threads....
Oh yeah, and both are big, smelly animals! :)
Once the sockpuppet is correctly busted, the original poster is supposed to come forward and acknowledge it, giving 1 point to the hunter/buster.
Carcano 10-16-08, 06:34 PM Great thread title...:p
Betrayer0fHope 10-16-08, 06:38 PM How about, we all create sock puppets, and we vote for the one person whose sock puppet is most likely the sock puppet of the day.
Sock Puppy 10-16-08, 06:48 PM This is a terrible idea.
Orleander 10-16-08, 07:06 PM lepustimidus and angrybellsprout (I prefer to call him angry bs)
amethyst08 10-17-08, 12:39 AM Sock Puppy and Orleander? Sock Puppy and BetrayerofHope?? BetrayerofHope and Orleander...!
CheskiChips 10-17-08, 12:56 AM Kadark and Norsefire?
James R 10-17-08, 01:19 AM I should tell you that the moderators and administrators have a fairly good idea of who uses sock puppets, and who the sock puppets are.
Some people think that their sock puppets are unknown. In fact, some sock puppets are tolerated because they have not breached any site rules so far. Others are being carefully watched, so that both the original member and the sock can be banned if the socks are used for nefarious purposes.
Some people are currently attempting to use IP masking to hide sock puppets. They have failed to do so, and it is only a matter of time before those socks are banned. Again, the only way that is being avoided is because the sock puppets involved have not so far crossed the line to the point where they have become a problem that needs moderator attention.
Some members who express similar views are definitely not sock puppets, contrary the beliefs of many other members. Examples include some of the suggestions above. For example, I can confirm that lepustimidus and angrybellsprout are certainly not the same person. Nor are Kadark and Norsefire.
In short, some people who the general membership may suspect to be sock puppets are certainly not. Others who are unsuspected quite possible are. The only way to really tell is to have access to IP addresses and other information available to the administrators. But do not think that we do not pay attention to what is happening on sciforums.
To the non-sock membership: don't blow this out of proportion and assume that half the people on sciforums are sock puppets. They are not. The vast majority of members are honest and have no need to hide behind sock puppets like scared children. They have only one identity.
skaught 10-17-08, 01:22 AM :worship: All hail the all powerful MODS!!!

Syzygys 10-17-08, 08:29 AM I should tell you that the moderators and administrators have a fairly good idea of who uses sock puppets, and who the sock puppets are.
New rule: moderators are banned from this game! :)

Syzygys 10-17-08, 09:14 AM Can we keep off the stupid Shorty fights of this thread? You know Shorty I would do you in a heartbeat, but girl, you have 10K posts and 70% of them are irrelevant...
This is a clean thread, you make your guess, it is either correct or wrong. No need to bitch and moan, unless you are having sex...

amethyst08 10-17-08, 10:30 AM I could not use the delete button yet (probably because I'm new), but all posts have been edited, Shorty, SAM...

amethyst08 10-17-08, 11:23 AM for?

My bf is coming soon, thanks & later
Orleander 10-17-08, 09:31 PM .....For example, I can confirm that lepustimidus and angrybellsprout are certainly not the same person. .....
It scares me a bit to know there is more than one man out there who hates women. :( Seriously? They aren't the same person? One if he posts at home and at work?
We should turn this into a more active game: everyone makes a sock puppet, we have a mod identify which usernames are sock puppets, and which members have sock puppets, but not specify which sp goes with which user, so we have to guess.
that would be pretty darn awesome/fun :D
Yes?
James R 10-18-08, 01:01 AM Orleander:
They aren't even in the same country.
Syzygys 10-18-08, 06:40 AM 2 points against James' explanations:
1. 2 or more idividuals can post from the same IP address if they live in the same appartment/dorm room. Completely legitime.
2. People with dynamic IP addresses can not be caught. Posters can be suspected to be sock puppets, but you can not prove it by IP addresses...
I am not sure how faking the IP address exactly works, but I assume the same way as #2, so if one is using a website to do like that, that is also hard to prove.
Asguard 10-18-08, 06:44 AM Syzygys actually there is more to it than a symple IP match.
Dont ask me how its done because i symply dont know, i do know stryder seems especially good at working out who is who
Syzygys 10-18-08, 07:47 AM Well, sure, style of writing, language and words used, posting in same threads, but that is more psychology than technology...
Orleander 10-18-08, 08:10 AM Orleander:
They aren't even in the same country.
well, I guess that's that then isn't it. There's 2 of them. UNLESS...he's a pilot? Yeah, no.
Stryder 10-18-08, 09:32 AM 2 points against James' explanations:
1. 2 or more idividuals can post from the same IP address if they live in the same appartment/dorm room. Completely legitime.
That is true and it can cause problems, most bans are attempted to be just the username for that reason, it's only on some really extreme cases does an IP ban come in to play and even then the IP itself has to be check to make sure that it's not a proxy of a provider where hundreds if not thousands of people post through. There is of course a way still to find out the individual's IP behind that proxy but I'm not going to explain things here we have a subforum for such inquiries.
2. People with dynamic IP addresses can not be caught. Posters can be suspected to be sock puppets, but you can not prove it by IP addresses...
Dynamic IP's are assigned from an ISP range (or a College/University) they usually have a leased a certain CLASS which defines which numbers the IP's rotate between. Most users will find their IP changes to increment within those ranges. If a person became a notorious abuser and attempted to shirk the entire system, it is possible to issue an Abuse complaint to the ISP. Of course doing so should only ever be done in extreme circumstances (like attempted hacking of the forum etc)
I am not sure how faking the IP address exactly works, but I assume the same way as #2, so if one is using a website to do like that, that is also hard to prove.
It is possible to fake a different IP from where you are located, however the IP will still be within the Range of the IP you are on and it has to be an IP that is currently waiting reallocation. Also it's against the Terms and Conditions of ISP to manipulate their networks to misuse other IP's, so be prepared to lose your Internet connection and potentially suffer a lawsuit should you pursue this (And this would be courtesy of your ISP not sciforums)
BetrayerofHope and Orleander...!
Noooooo!

shorty_37 10-18-08, 06:01 PM Give it a rest will ya...
Syzygys 10-18-08, 06:24 PM For instance you are on
I know you can look it up, but I don't remember I gave you permission to post my personal info asshole. :)
Not that I care that much but in the future don't missuse moderator privileges. One more reason to hide one's IP and other info.
I looked up, an IP hider costs $30 and Idoubt it works the same way as Stryder said and I also doubt that my ISP would care. I also doubt that ISPs like AOL are using IP addresses from the same range....And same range doesn't really help much if it is a wide range. Also one can use websites like Proxify.com....
Asguard 10-18-08, 07:03 PM my apologises. I didnt mean to offend you, i only posted what i belived to be useless info to anyone wishing to act against you
i will delete it
Orleander 10-18-08, 07:37 PM I know.. SAM and Shorty

Sock Puppy 10-18-08, 08:57 PM To the non-sock membership: don't blow this out of proportion and assume that half the people on sciforums are sock puppets. They are not. The vast majority of members are honest and have no need to hide behind sock puppets like scared children. They have only one identity.
....:bawl: It's so true! I...I didn't want to be a sock puppet! I didn't! But he made me! :bawl: I'm so ashamed.
Well, I guess. Anyway, I'm only used for messing about. I don't think I'm much of a secret to anyone anyway, and I don't think I've ever argued seriously on the sock. If I have, then I apologize and I retract everything I ever said unless I got a really good one in.
Actually, I do like the game idea.
MacGyver1968 10-18-08, 08:59 PM I'm the sock puppet of Norsefire.
Sock Puppy 10-18-08, 09:00 PM I knew it!

Sock Puppy 10-18-08, 09:12 PM It's like the devil. The devil is always the last guy you suspect. Ergo, Ned Flanders. Ergo, Mac=Norsefire. It's all there for those that care to read it.
Simon Anders 10-18-08, 10:05 PM Can a spouse count as a sockpuppet?
Betrayer0fHope 10-18-08, 10:47 PM I am the sock puppet of you. Think deeply upon this.
Simon Anders 10-18-08, 10:51 PM I am the sock puppet of you. Think deeply upon this.
You are a sockpuppet of my younger self. A time traveling sock puppet. A ghost of Simon past puppet, which is fun to say fast.
The right hand does not know what the left hand's sockpuppet is doing.
