One could argue about a lot of stuff, just for the sake of argumentation, which is what we do here, and soldiers die for a lot of reasons, not just love and/or hate for their country or whatever other reason they have created.
Some may even do it for fun! Because they like to kill and don't mind dying.

I would say Human progress is one step forwards and two steps back.

For every step towards progress, a step back might be taken for cutting a corner and doing something wrong (like illegal human subject research), then a second step back is bad caused by the legislation changes made to make sure that such misoccurances no longer occur in the future. (Which can act a bit like a bird having it's wings clipped)

Thats why it's important to have Ethic's a core construct of any scientific endevour, to make sure that we proceed forwards without having to repeat steps where mistakes were made.
