View Full Version : I want sciforums to be hexadecimal
It would be like this: An initial payment to show that I am not joking. A certain payment each month as long as there continue to be no decimal numbers in the various counts on the site (messages can use decimal). The presence of a single decimal number will kill the deal, and mean no further payments at all. The payments would be around a thousand dollars a month.
Nothing else will be required for the money. You may boot me and band me for being annoying still.
This would be for everyone. I would occasionally log on in new accounts to make sure that decimal is not being given as an option anywhere for users. I intend to FORCE users to use hexadecimal (unless they want to use something on their end to change this). And money will give me the ability to do this.
So does it have to be four thousand dollars a month to get a reply?
Nine thousand per month. Does that get me a simple reply?
Porfiry 08-11-02, 12:34 PM It's a deal. Money upfront.
I knew it. People don't care about money anymore. I guess we're going back to bartering for services.
Firefly 08-11-02, 12:35 PM Well, I'll reply, but I have no clue what you mean, and don't want to pay. :p
I'm quite serious about this. As for the actual terms. I'd like to stay below ten thousand for a year. I'm thinking an initial payment, and a final payment after about six months if no decimal appears (with deductions for each decimal incident, depending on how quickly you address the decimal). The issue here is that you are using standard bb software, and will need to edit that. If you can't do that, then we don't have a deal.
I will not give you any money until you show that you can deliver a bb without decimal on it.

Well, I'm a computer <A HREF="http://www.xlife.org/">programmer</A> by trade, I cut my teeth doing PHP programming, and I've already modified the standard source code for this forum. So, it *can* be done, and quite easily at that.

If you're "quite serious", you'd realize that no one is crazy enough to take you up on your offer without some initial deposit to assure your credibility.

Check you pm. And by the way, saying it can be done "easily" really hurt your bargaining position. :D
Porfiry 08-11-02, 01:10 PM Allow me to qualify it, then. "Easy" is not the same as "trivial". By easy, I mean that it is not a difficult problem, but the implementation would require would require extensive changes to much of the code.
Also, I'm guessing you care less about the implementation and more about forcing several thousand users of this busy forum to use hexadecimal. Or am I wrong about your intentions?

Why should I care about implementation? I'm paying you. You handle that. Yes, I want to force the users here to learn and understand hexadecimal. Is that any worse than blinking ads?
And by the way, I notice you are moderator of this. If you delete this post or even move it, I will assume you are very rich. If I am giving you money, I demand respect.
Porfiry 08-11-02, 01:34 PM Money will buy you all the respect you desire.
...and I'm not just the "Moderator", I run this site. I hope that was clear.

Thank you. Yes I know you run the site. I hope we can work out a deal and I can help you keep this site running.
sjmarsha 08-12-02, 02:01 AM i think that i speak for everyone when i say....
you are sad.
If Fen is on the level, I think Porfiry deserves every oppurtunity to receive financial considerations for the support of sciforums.
sjmarsha 08-13-02, 02:17 AM oh yeah definately. But i would ask for half the money up front.
MRC_Hans 08-13-02, 08:16 AM Oh, I see a financing possibility coming up. Since Porfiry is the only one who can bring this about, his bargaining position is absolutely tops. Fen, all you have to think about is, what is this worth to you: 3E8 bucks? 1388 bucks? 2710 bucks?
Why do you want hex, btw? Whats wrong with octal??

What about the digits 0 to 9? They appear in both decimal and hexadecimal systems. Or am I misunderstanding what you mean?
Pine_net 08-13-02, 09:05 AM What do you mean Fen when you say "Yes, I want to force the users here to learn and understand hexadecimal"?
Is this some kind of freak hexadecimal crusade? Will I be joining a freaky hexadecimal cult where I will have to cut off my... The red flags are up Fen. Explain yourself.

Wrong. Dead wrong. There's a lot of message boards out there, and Porfiry is running out of money. I'm the one dictating the bid here. Hasn't anyone heard how the internet advertising market has collapsed? Eh?

At the moment, but it could all well change; it's already been shown that if Porfiry were to ask for money, there would be a lot of donations, subscriptions etc.

Who the hell do you think you are? Your bids are a joke and you have the business sense of a child. I'm not even considering your offer anymore.
Lesion42 08-13-02, 11:42 AM Hail the conquering hero.:)
Porfiry is a computer person and has business sense??? It's supposed to be one or the other, not both. That's unnatural...
Lesion42 08-13-02, 11:44 AM He's going to whip out his spandex superheroe costume any second. avert your eyes!:D

I started reading at page one, and I was so happy when I got to this post! :) :)
Firefly 08-13-02, 12:51 PM Yeah, you've got more patience than me... :bugeye: :)
Lesion42 08-13-02, 12:54 PM Patience? What's patience?
Firefly 08-13-02, 01:00 PM What?! I don't have time to explain it to you!!
 :p
(Sorry, that was just crying out to be said :p)
Lesion42 08-13-02, 01:03 PM I saw it coming.:D

The last message you gave me indicated you were very much considering the offer, and at a very low price indeed. You need the money. I have it.

And there could have been a donation from me. Not now. But look for $2.56 in your coffers if you set up donations (not subscriptions).

At first I thought you were insane, but possibly wealthy. I now realize you are insane and only have delusions of wealth.

Was it the small figure I offered to show I'm serious? You were the one who gave me a very low figure first. I don't want to buy the site. I want something very simple and am willing to pay for it. What else do you want?
Pine_net 08-13-02, 04:46 PM Your soul please. Cha-Ching
Porfiry 08-13-02, 07:33 PM Was it the small figure I offered to show I'm serious?
Yes, $16 is rather silly. I give more money than that to homeless folk on the street.
Wouldn't it be cheaper for Fen to start up his own hex site?
Some business mind.
want a purple background please
will pay good money
:D
sjmarsha 08-14-02, 02:57 AM I WANT PURPLE TOO!!!
Fen. How old are you? Have you just done a lesson on hex in primary school and are trying to show off your new found knowledge?
MRC_Hans 08-14-02, 03:54 AM I really think the deal was worth considering, provided of course Fen has the money. In my experience, voluntary donations are hard to get; there is usually a flurry at the start, but then they get scarce.
But that doesnt mean Porfiry is in a bad bargaining position; you get it all wrong, Fen. Porfiry doesnt NEED this board, its the users who need it. He can pay for it if he chooses to, its not that expensive to run a board; anybody with a regular income can do that if they want it bad enough. What Porfiry is telling us that he does NOT want it bad enough to foot the bill alone, so if we want the board bad enough, we need to chip in. And it seems to me, Fen, that you want it quite badly, heheheh.

Well I hope in your town if I'm ever homeless then. Oh, maybe you mean canadian dollars? Besides, as I said, you gave me an offer that I'm considering, and it was very low for the amount of work involved on your end (although the period of activation was small). Now check your pm's and let's deal.
Dude, you had your 0.5 seconds of attention, now stop whining or get lost.
