Surely it is common sense to excercise regularly and not be a couch potato and this must apply to more than just TV? Don't most people spend 6 hours a day being sedentry at work? Why aren't they advising us to quit our jobs?

Further study is needed (read: give us more research money).

The research industry is an industry and clever people are very good at putting together proposals for studies. In most cases they are seeking a personal income and the actual study is just a 'product'.
Here in the Yukon, because of the small population base, one has greater opportunity to observe the goings on of the employment sector and gets to know which persons work for one of the three levels of government, how many work in mining and related exploration, the retail sector, the service industry, the social assistance sector and those who get by with no visible means of support by applying for 'grant money' for various projects or studies.
I have confidence in very little research, as the majority of it seems to be funded to portray a predetermined point of view.
The rest, as you point out, is so obvious as to not be needed.
