I agree, Shaman 1301. Words without feet, or their extensions, are useless ... and contribute damned little to survival.

As for meaning, Cris: I think it's pretty up to the individual to determine what the meaning of life is. Unfortunately, it seems that too many, maybe most, would rather be told what it is than to meditate on the question.

Yes, Chagur, there are many paths to self-destruction. Some are mass movements such as; war , hatred,destruction of the environment, over-population to mention a few. There are also more individual paths; despair, drugs, suicide and murder. We homosapiens seem to be the only species involved in these activities; therefore, we are the exception to the rule that the purpose of life is survival.

Hi I just joined after checking out the site. This is to a point that shamen made about homosapiens being the only species that commits suicide. In Thailand, certain frogs can sometimes be fond impaled on the thorns of a type of bush that grows in their habitat. It is said by the locals that they do this to themselves when they are heartbroken. just a point and my chance to say something on the net

Welcome to sciforums! I just have one question.
How do the locals know when a frog is heartbroken?

These are the words of people that live off the land and interract with all the animals and plants around them and spend hours just watching. It happens around the time of mating. I suppose with so many of them competing for a partner, some are going to get left out. It's an old argument as to weather other animals think/dream/imagine but I reckon it's pretty presumptious of humans to think we are the only ones capable independent thought. I read somwhere that scientists are now investigating the possibility that fruit flies think and dream.
I live in Thailand and often spend time in the country. There is loads to learn from the rural people. Culture/medecines/survival etc.

God created all life for His good pleaser!
You have purpose in life, is to the Glory of God!
All that is, is to enjoy, and the Creator has given us the gift of life!
And His people shell enjoy life forever ! Life a lot better then what anyone could dream!
Animals too have a purpose!
I have have a better purpose then being a glorified ape!
Having a purpose makes a lot of since!

At the philosophical level every religion, especially Christianity emphasizes that survival is the purpose of life. Your bible states that Jesus said that ‘he who believes in me will achieve everlasting life’. That is the entire basis for Christianity – survival. Consider the alternative - who would follow a god that offered death?

Your emphasis on ‘just’ must mean that you think survival must also be something more, and certainly your bizarre religion arbitrarily offers utopia for some and eternal torture for the rest.

This is not entirely relevant to this thread but tiassa's comment reminded me of this -

The other thing that makes the people think that the frogs do it deliberatly is that the thorns of these grasses dont start until quite high up ( Too high for them to jump up and get caught) So it's a very delibrate climb. Admittedly the one lacking piece of evidence is that it happens at night so no one really sees exactly what happens. A bit like the tree in the forest falling down..... Is there any sound if there is no one there to hear it?
By the way, do you think Suicide is a selfish thing to do?
I'd like to ask Sir Loon what purpose he thinks animals have. Should we be eating them, caring for them, observing, interacting?

There are definite reasons for your existence, my fine woodland creature! :D
And to the not pointing to the Holy Scriptures, there are the Words of God, and is truth. There is reason for everything in the entire UNIVERSE! And you and fellow woodland creatures are special ! Like I and others have said, made in the likeness, in the image of GOD the creator, and are originally made a little lower then the angels and in Jesus Christ can have a personal and loving relationship with God! Birds sing to the Glory of God, Men can do far more then any other creature in the physical UNIVERSE , on the Earth in worshiping and serving a Living GOD, God who is LOVE!
The Earth it self has reason for existence, obviously!:)

Yes suicide is a dumb selfish thing to do! Life is a gift from GOD, and is most precious! It's the cowardly way out of life, rather then to live on to the bitter end, and new beginning after death!
I put my entire life in GOD's hands, He is the only one that will have the right to spare or to end it! He's the author of life itself anyway!
We rule over the animal kingdom and we enjoy life with all it's diversity, all definitely has meaning as well as purpose! To the Glory of God!

this will allow another revolution
which has been subdued for far too long!
like trying to hold back water in a river-the longer you hold it back the bigger the damage! this is also true with the human mind!
so i guess this means that we will enevitably have to purge the
controlling powers to develop the human race!
this will be life denieing life to allow life to stop being held back and ultimately denied! :D
we have yet to grasp the entire picture of what life truely is
so i guess we can only do our best to presurve as much as possible to allow us to have as much life as we can! :)
