I live 2.8 miles from the ageing Bradwell nuclear power station. The Island I live on is quite small and there is only one road in/out that is frequently covered by the tide. This means that if the powerplant was to have an accident I could effectively be trapped here.

Last year there was a fire at the plant although there was allegedly no release of radiation. As the plant ages, there is an increasing possibility that a seal, valve or pipe might fail. These old HPW reactors always were a bit leaky, but generally had a fairly good record.

I would have thought that as the island gets cut off so regularly there might have been safety provisions made. With the sea cutting off the only escape route, I would have thought that we would at least be given Iodine tablets just in case. As it is, I eat sea-salt which has plenty of iodine in it.

I was wondering if any-one else lived near a pile, and if so what they thought about it.

The plants have been decommissioned.

It last produced power in 2002.

The final fuel element was removed from Reactor 2 in December 2005, which means that 99% of the radioactive material has been removed from the site.

They tore down our nuclear plant years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_Nuclear_Power_Plant The only thing that is of great concern is the Hanford Site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanford_Site
