Have nationalism and liberalism been forces for progress or causes of conflict over the past hundred years of European history? 1937.

The hundred years stating from before this year 1939. What could happen with Europe in the future? 1900's I understand what nationalism and liberalism is (and how people feel about it), what I want is evidence of the destuctive or helpful effects they had on Europe and may in the future.

Progress.
nationalism and such may lead to more states and parts of germany and such breaking away. i'd like to see the return of Preußen and Bayern and Sachsen as indepentant nations...
or nationalism could do the reverse and form One Europe...
it could go either way.
but in both directions, i see no conflict arising from Nationalism. nazism is different, but thats a fringe lunatic group of ultranationalist racist...different from nationalists.
liberalism combined with nationalism could wield a very powerful, but very open nation.
think "USA" under a democrat, and you got a nationalist and liberalist nation. put that in a european context, and you've got a very power country.
