I wonder if this would actually work.

Never trust a man with a few thousand smoke detectors.

I don't think it will work.

Every sunday at the dump!
No wonder he wants to blow up the world. God does this man need to discover hand relief!

Now the UCSW can have nuclear weapons to threaten Wales with!

I wonder if that will work. YOu guys would know because in about 4 or so years, you would hear about a 20 year old in KY who blows a big chunk of some country into the ocean with a nuke.

I think so.

I guess Iran can start ordering smoke detectors from the U.S. now. Those Americans will never know what hit 'em when millions of smoke alarms come flying from all directions.

Seriously though, assuming this guy is correct, this one of the craziest and scariest things I've ever heard.

I'm going to go buy a lot of smoke detectors.

Sounds fun. I would try, but I think the goverment would frown on citizens making small scale nuclear weapons.

A guy in the U.S. got arrested for possessing radioactive material illegally after he dismantled over a hundred smoke detectors to get it.
The article I read about it said there wasn´t a threat of a bomb but enough of the material could be harmful after long periods of time.

You can get radioactive materials from many sources.
Ever thought of getting a merit badge in nuclear physics?

As an aside, I found the Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments (mentioned in my link above) available for download at a bit torrent site. Apparently, the book was not available for sale very long as it had experiments in it of less than a safe nature. It doesn't get into uranium refinement, but it does tell you how to make chlorine gas and chloroform...

Here's the chlorine gas experiment:

"Put .5 g (1/8 teaspoon) Manganese Dioxide into test tube. Add 3 ml (1/8 test tube) undiluted Hydrochloric Acid. Heat gently. Chlorine forms. Waft a little carefully toward you for a sniff."

Careful now.
Bear in mind that this is a book written for children.

Hm. Does the so won chlorine gas kill said child?

In small doses, I'm sure you're cool, but you know the exuberance of children and I really wouldn't recommend one make chlorine gas and then waft some over for a sniff.

They do offer some safety protocol:

"Have a bottle of diluted household ammonia (90% water, 10% household ammonia) on hand. Sniff this if you get too strong a whiff of chlorine."

Immediately above the illustration of the experiment is this note:
"Note: Perform these experiments out-of-doors or before an open window. Be careful not to breathe fumes."

I guess the author decided to cover all his bases. But, he's being a bit contradictory.

"Waft some over for a sniff..."
"Be careful not to breathe fumes..."

I'm guessing there's a difference between the scientific definition of sniff and breathe.
Or something.

Oh, there are many, many differences between definitions ...

Probably fake, since I pretty sure there's not that much Americium in every smoke detector.

1/2 a gram? I thought it was 1/2 a milligram.

It's possible.

I remember reading a story about it a while back. A kid in college was trying to make a nuke.

But, if you're really trying to cause harm, you might as well get a pointed stick and start jabbing people at your local mall. The headline:

"Boy With Stick Causes Mass Destruction"

Can you imagine a fat woman running from a kid with a pointed stick? And a cop's refusal to shoot? The stand-off would last for hours.
