View Full Version : Question about connection traffic and sciforums

It seems all the avatars and buttons have been turned off for now. Not part of the pages. Is this to reduce traffic? I was under the impression that once initally downloaded, those images would remain in the browser's cache for use, thus reducing traffic anyway (at least for some time). Is this incorrect?

Yes, I'm attempting to do everything possible to cut bandwidth consumption. But, beyond that, elimination of the buttons was an aesthetic choice I've been wanting to make. Elimination of avatars is a prelude to allowing only donors the use of certain features.

How much do you need from one active user, Porfiry?

I'll have my bank account back in some 1.5 month or so,
but because my funds are very limited I wouldn't like to overpay.

Aw, no more av's. Now I have to be intellectual and more interesting to make up for it. :D

Yes, Porfiry, how much do you need? How much is that per user?

Would cutting down the 'conversations' in free thoughts be a big help?

Prehaps we could delete some of the old files of no redeeming value. Some of the nonsense posts and all of the users posts that have so shamelessly led to this problem.

maybe just one other cheap storage for archive files
say pages minus 5

No, that's not the problem. I have more than enough storage space. It's the high traffic (read popularity) of sciforums that's becoming an issue.

you could transfer sciforums to a secret url know only to the current members

or you could have a limit of members and allow to join new ones, let's say only after some are inactive for 3 months and delete them then (if anybody goes to Zimbabve, he warns not to delete his account)

maybe allow them only to be viewed by members
