I've been seing a lot of spiders in my room recently and most of them look like this: big bottom, black body and yellow spots on the back.

I cought one and took pictures of it. See attachment.

It resembles the Black Widow spider, however I know that a female Black Widow spider has a red spot on the back and the male is small. I have seen only large spiders like the ones I'm talking about. No smaller ones.
One thing that frieked me out was when a grasshoper (yes, i have grasshoppers in my room), which is about 4 times bigger than the spider was bitten by one, he stopped moving, died I think. Instantaneously.

What are these things? :(

If I were you I would get one or two of them in a jam jar and take them to a university that studies biology.

I believe you might have found yourself a new variant of Widow, with a yellow spot rather than red.

Spider's life expectancy aren't very long in comparison to ours, which means during our life time many hundreds of generations of spider can occur.

Darwinds Evolution proves that the spiders through these generations mutate, and eventually evolve.

Thats why in London the Tube (underground/Subway) has it's own midge and rat which have been populating there since the late 1800's.

It's also why scientists love finding caves that have a population that is sealed within it, because no external influences alter the genepool and because they have the chance to evolve.

For cripes sake don't get bitten by one.

Too late. I've slaughtered them all. I don't want to get bitten by one ... :(

Wildlife lol :D

Seriously I think the university should study my room. New species evolve here... :D
Last week I caught a hybrid of a cricket, a bee and a dragonfly...

Take the ugh, corpses in. :disgusted smilie:

What kinda area do you live in? (Village, city, town...? Do you always have your window open?)

BloodSuckingGerbile
08-31-02, 12:03 PM
Well, it's a town and my window faces orchards and a small eucalyptus forest... and yes I always keep my window open. It's pretty hot herein the summer.

I have that cool thingie that gives bugs an electric shock but it doesn't help and if something big gets caught in it, it stinks like a burned chicken... yuck.

So.. I have no choice but to live in harmony with nature... :)

*eyes the 2-headed dog and 8-legged mouse* Nope, can't say. :D

I've been having these unwanted visitors in my condo too! Except, it's not spiders, it's huge-arse hornets with evil intentions! I saw one on my window the other day, and when I tried to catch it, it attacked me! And a couple of days before that, I saw a dragonfly land on exterior of my window, but it was no dragonfly that I've ever seen! It had a wickedly sharp needle coming out of the end of its bum (?), and the mandibles were enormous! I drew a picture of it, but I couldn't identify it. Very exotic...

By the way, BloodSuckingGerbile, how come you don't have a picture of yourself posted at The Picture Thread? You have a camera (as we can see), so you have no excuse! :D :D

Dewd, you should have Deena send you a picture of this horrible thing she found in her dorm room. It's a "house centipede", and it's a beast!

Oh geez, I hate centipedes!! The way they slither, their multitudes of legs, that disgusting color and the way they writhe on the floor after you poke at them....*shudder*

A couple of times a year at my family's farm, we get invaded by BILLIONS of small black millipedes. Walking on the verandah becomes like walking on cornflakes, all these little squishies getting crushed underfoot. They get inside, up the walls, on the ceiling... They even drop down on you from the ceiling while you're in bed. Very gross.

Maybe... We do have a station with a huge set of cellular phone antenas nearby...

BlueSoul:

I think that the thing with the needle in its bum you saw is that cricket-bee-dragonfly thing I saw. It also had a sharp needle coming out of its... head or... bum.. Can't tell...

Camera? Huh? what? Oh.. I... aam... It... was eaten... by ...a... giant mantis.

P.S. AAH!! Luckily I haven't seen any centipedes in my room... They make a tarantula look like a cute little hamster...

One that you should be aware of is the Brown Recluse. This spider varies in from a light brown to a mid tone of brown. It is distinglished by a violin shape on the top of its body, near the head. They are usually found in the quiet, dark areas. When disturbed they can bite. Normally they are not aggressive.

The bite area appears to be something like a pimple at the start and itches a mite. A few days later, the bite burns. The bite area shows evidence of the skin rotting. Without medical help this bite will leave a large hole where the bite started.

I bring this up as there was a rash last year of folks being bit by them. They are located throughout most of the US.

Ah! No killing of spiders! Do like me: take them in, pop them into a clear box thing, and study them. I captured a huge one once, about the size of 3/4 my palm length. (2.5 inches in diametre)

It made a giant web, and everyday, I'd poke some live bugs into the box to feed it. I named the spider Spitz, because every time I opened the lid, it made spasmic motions like it was going to spit acid on me. Very cool. :D

I drew some pictures of it too, but they're not that good. Unfortunately, I had to let little Spitz go... :( I think it was going to lay eggs, so I had to release it so little baby Spitzs wouldn't be running around the house. :D

none of these insects are as dreaded as the COCKROACH. I hate those things. Not only are they ugly but they stink and creapy. I had one land on my neck when i was sleeping. Man I was screaming like a girl. Also had a rash for a few days on the spot it landed on

*nods* Yeah, but you know, it's only an itty bitty spider. An itty bitty spider with spikey fur and glistening eyes, and wickedly sharp mandible things. :D

lol! @ one of you guys flying out the window :D

Oh man, I hate when you think they're dead, and you go closer to poke them, and they spring back up! *shudder, and looks around nervously*

Aw jeez! *makes a sour face* Have you seen the ones in the rainforest?! Those cockroaches are like moving islands! The bugs are as big as rats, the rats as big as cats, and cats as big as dogs!!

Hey, I'm sitting right here! LOL, j/k :D

Actually, roaches are probably going to still be around when our bones are fossil fuel. They're amazingly adaptable, those little bastards. :D They eat glue, sneakers... I don't know, we make it, they eat it!

Deena
09-10-02, 06:10 PM
That does NOT make them useful. Just really durable.

If they could eat ALL our trash, well that'd be something. But they just sort of snack on stuff. Who needs a universal snacker?

And they best be leaving my shoes out of this whole "snacking" process. Or I'll sic my centipede on them.

Hey has anyone else ever been bitten by a spider that left an egg sack in you? I did ! It was terrible too! I didn't know it had left an egg sack in it until it swelled up really big and turned blue! I had it covered in a big bandage and when I went to pull the bandage off my leg started bleeding and the blood was almost black at first so I sqoze(sp) it until the blood turned red again and then I noticed the egg sack start to push out so I kept sqeezing until it finally came out! EWWWW! It left a whole in my leg that looks like a bullet wound scar.

By the way before it swelled up real big I went to the doctor and she said " oh don't worry it's just a little insect bite" YEAH RIGHT!

Walker
09-28-02, 12:25 AM
I had a brown recluse bite once. my leg had to have the circulation cut off to keep the poison from spreading. My foot swelled five shoe sizes...and they say I was lucky.

If I had been unlucky, dear friends, you would not be reading this quality post.
