Cowboy 08-29-03, 08:29 PM Originally posted by spuriousmonkey only 20.000 gun deaths in the US per year. Which isn't all that many, if you consider a few factors: There are supposedly 60 to 80 million people who legally own firearms in America. The people who legally own firearms frequently aren't the ones using their firearms to commit crimes. A tally of something as broad as "gun deaths" probably includes people shot by police officers, accidents and suicides, as well as crimes. moementum7 08-29-03, 08:43 PM Only 20,000 deaths. Hilarious! Considering the fact that the next highest rate of death from guns is around 3,000 in any other democratic society. Hilarious! You gotta watch Bowling for Columbine. It is all about this peculiar scenario. And it's a good movie.:) Cowboy 08-29-03, 08:54 PM Originally posted by moementum7 Only 20,000 deaths. Hilarious! Considering the fact that the next highest rate of death from guns is around 3,000 in any other democratic society. Hilarious! The absolute death totals are meaningless when comparing nations with hugely different gun laws and numbers of gun owners. The proper way to measure would be to compare the number of gun deaths relative to the number of people who legally own guns; and for the sake of intellectual honesty, murders, accidental shooting deaths, shootings by police officers and suicides should be listed individually. But anyway, I consider gun-ownership to be an issue of rights regardless of any statistics. Originally posted by moementum7 You gotta watch Bowling for Columbine. If one likes his little documentary, and decides to examine a little more carefully his claim that Americans are so trigger happy, they will see that an extraordinary amount of shootings are by young black males. If one factors them out, they will see that the per capita numbers of shooting deaths for whites in Canada and the US are about the same. One difference being that Canadians use rifles a little more than do Americans. "Bowling for Columbine" is a great documentary, if one cares nothing about reality. According to the Uniform Crime Report from the FBI in 2000 there were 14,697 murders, of which 4,809 were committed by whites and 5,361 were committed by blacks. Blacks make up about 12.5% of the US population. In 2001 there were 15,488 murders of which whites committed 5,174 and blacks committed 5,521. |
