View Full Version : What's on your iPod?
Fraggle Rocker 10-21-09, 03:13 PM As the new Moderator of Arts & Culture, my first official act is to close the 85-page "What's on your CD player?" thread and launch a new one. The old one's still there; you can read it but you can't post to it.
Somebody replaced "What's on your turntable?" with "What's on your CD player?" a few years ago and it's time to update the technology reference again. Not to mention, an 85-page thread is difficult to manage.
I must confess that even though I'm a musician (bass guitar) and even though I have loved music since the days before rock and roll was invented, I don't often check into this discussion. It seems to be dominated by a handful of people who love classic rock. Now I love classic rock too, I'm always happy to perform "Johnny B. Goode" and "Sweet Home Alabama," and in the past couple of years I've attended concerts by Crosby Stills & Nash, Crosby & Nash, Stills, Zappa Plays Zappa (three times), the Doors (with Ian Astbury), the Cult (can't get enough of Ian Astbury), Bo Diddley, Janis Ian, Jimmy Buffett, Jean-Luc Ponty, the Cure, Renaissance, and I'm sure there are just as many more than didn't spring to mind.
But I don't think classic rock needs any cheerleaders. Except for Renaissance (sadly) all of these concerts had huge contingents of young people who appreciate the music their parents and grandparents liked. It's not like the Generation Gap, when people who loved rock hated swing and vice versa. Young people listen to AC/DC and the Eagles, or at least don't walk out when a bar band plays it.
Contemporary music could probably stand more print, since except for blockbusters like the Killers and Kelly Clarkson (I've seen them too), most of it isn't as well known as the Beatles and Pink Floyd, despite the airplay.
So I urge people who enjoy the music of this century to speak up.
In addition, I'm not sure how much value there is in a post that merely names a song and links to a YouTube video. Most people have limited time and can't follow every link they receive in a day. Why not say a little something about the song? Like, what has it got that made you love it? That might help people decide to check it out.
Of course the people who laboriously transcribe the entire lyric sheet to a song are doing their homework. But as a musician I have to note that a song is a package deal: the lyrics and the music complement each other. Either one by itself might not grab anybody's attention. There are not very many songs that can stand alone as poetry. And even if they could, don't lose track of the fact that probably the majority of the inhabitants of this planet like music, but poetry has a very small fan base, particularly in the USA. Judging by the traffic on poetry websites, it's been estimated that more Americans write poetry than read it.
So if you want to turn the members on to one of your favorite songs, put a little effort into it!
Note: That's just me speaking as your elder. Speaking as the Moderator, you're still free to do anything you want with this thread, so long as it's on topic and doesn't violate the forum rules.

There's no place that I'd rather be than right here
With my red necks, white socks and blue ribbon beer
The barmaid is mad 'cause some guy made a pass
The juke box is playin' there stands the glass
And the cigarette smoke kind-a hangs in the air
Red-necks, white socks and blue rib-bon beer
A cow-boy is cussin' the pin-ball ma-chine
A drunk at the bar is get-tin' noisy and mean
And, some guy on the phone says ill be home soon dear
Red-necks white socks and blue ribbon beer
No we don't fit in with that white collar crowd
We're a little too rowdy and a little too loud
There's no place that I'd rather be than right here
With my red-necks white socks and blue ribbon beer
The semis are passing on the highway outside
The four thirty crowd is about to arrive
The sun's go-in' down and we'll all soon be here
Rednecks, white socks and blue ribbon beer
There's no place that I'd rather be than right here
With my red-necks, white socks and blue ribbon beer

Fraggle Rocker 10-21-09, 04:51 PM I dont own a ipod..........Neither do I. I intend to get one, but I'm waiting for the technology to transcribe all of our LPs and cassettes to digital. I demand that it erase the scratches and pops and make it as clean as possible. And then of course I have to go home to California where all our music is. All I have with me here in D.C. are CDs and some cassettes, and my Walkman still works fine.
i am not even saying what I listen too!! hahaa I will never live it down.. but I do hear my daughters kid songs.. Its teddybear picnic right nowHey, nothing to be embarrassed about. I like Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne. One of my favorite songs is "It's Not Easy Bein' Green," and most of my favorite movies have Muppets in them. I'm waiting impatiently for the Fraggle Rock feature movie that they've been promising for years.
"The Teddy Bears' Picnic" was the theme song for the Saturday morning kids' radio show I listened to in the 1950s, "No School Today" starring Big John and Sparkie. When we moved to Arizona they didn't have TV yet. (Unfortunately I was too young to run away from home.) But even when they did, it didn't run 24 hours like it does today. There was nothing on Saturday morning, and very little for children at all. About an hour's worth after school, puppet shows like Beanie & Cecil or Kukla, Fran and Ollie.
christa 10-21-09, 05:15 PM oh wow.... that is just crazy....
well
i have a few different people in my playlist...
it ranges from Across the Universe sound track to Whitney Houston! there is Britney spears, Rob zombie, weezer, taylor swift, tupac, Of course Sublime! Sugarcult, saving able, lady gaga, prince, prima j, pit bull, pink, nelly furtato, paris hilton(so I like 2 songs, sure me), MxPx,Ramones, metallica, I too have kelly, and katty perry, hinder, carrie underwood, buckcherry, and that is just what is on my computer... I have over 400 cds also...
Challenger78 10-21-09, 05:22 PM Across the Universe was just an orgy for beatles fans.
I got bored the third time they jumped into song, either that or the way they did "hey Jude".. Movies like that are fine if you're a fan, but not if you only knew 4 of their songs.
And they didn't play Eleanor Rigby...
Anywho, Most of my bands have now broken up, but
Here's my Top of my most Played List
1. Shadow on the Sun- Audioslave
2. Exploder-Audioslave
3.Johnny I hardly knew ya-Dropkick murphy's
4.Last Legs - Valve OST
5. Californication- RHCP
6. Extreme Ways- Moby
7. Walkie talkie man-Steriogram
8. Skies on fire- ACDC
9. Dance of Death-Iron maiden
10.Sleeping Sun - Nightwish...
My song preferences do change violently sometimes.
Fraggle Rocker 10-22-09, 08:48 AM i have a few different people in my playlist... Whitney Houston . . . . Britney spears, Rob zombie . . . . pink . . . . metallica . . . . katty perry . . . .Nothing to be embarrassed about there. I'm surely old enough to be your grandpa and I have all of those CDs too. I'm thinking about going to the Pink concert. My wife says people will think I'm gay or trying to stalk young girls. But I always let them know I'm a musician so then it seems normal and they enjoy talking to me. I've also seen Sarah Bareilles, Rob Thomas, Sheryl Crow and Shakira. (When she was still singing in Spanish.)
Across the Universe was just an orgy for beatles fans. I got bored the third time they jumped into song, either that or the way they did "hey Jude".. Movies like that are fine if you're a fan, but not if you only knew 4 of their songs. You don't have to be a Beatles fan to know most of their music by heart, especially my generation. I enjoyed what they did with the songs and I liked the story. It was interesting to see the 1960s from a non-American perspective. For us it was all about civil rights and the Vietnam war. Well yeah, sex and drugs and rock'n'roll too.
I only have a couple of Beatles albums and I'm not sure any of the bands I've been in have ever performed any of their songs--many of which are surprisingly difficult. But I always seem to like movies that are built around them. "Yellow Submarine" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" are two of my all-time favorites.
Anywho, Most of my bands have now broken up . . . .Wait until you're my age, waxing nostalgic over everyone from Hank Williams and Buddy Holly to Quicksilver and the Strawbs.
1. Shadow on the Sun- AudioslaveLove that album.
5. Californication- RHCPAs a Californian that one has special meaning to me, like "Hotel California."
My song preferences do change violently sometimes. My top ten list evolves. "El Paso" by Marty Robbins isn't #1 any more, but I still like it. You have to make room for new stuff. Popular culture isn't like classical culture, where if Prokofiev is your favorite composer and Faulkner is your favorite writer they always will be. I can't understand people who only like the pop songs from their youth. I dutifully play those songs for them and they're certainly fun, but when I load out and drive off I play Seether and Charlotte Martin in my car.

You remind me of my mother. She was always so "with it". We listened to Staying Alive and Stars on 45 before we even knew who those actors/singers were because of her. She was the one who introduced us to Wham and Madonna and Boy George.
I'm a old fuddy duddy. While I enjoy "club music" when I am out, I like my old favourites more. I usually have to listen to a song several times before I can decide if I like it. Lots of noise puts me off and nonsense verse or songs I cannot relate to seem like a waste of time.
So, whats on my iPod? Well its been lying around since I came home. I like the radio better. :p
So I'm listening to fever 104 FMm which is currently playing Genie Rap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjufFwloYV8) .

Yeah, The commentary was ok, IMO, the love song sections could be a little shorter, but the "With a little help from my friends" and "I want you" (Is that a beatles song?), segments were great. Loved Bono as the crazy/high professor dude.

True. I have a revolving sense of music, In essence, certain bands will be constants for longer periods of time than others. For example, the Red hot chilli peppers have been around since my childhood, and Audioslave, well, not so much, but those two are always on my ipod. Certain Rap songs have made the run too, For example, Sing for the moment, with Eminem and Aerosmith, is still around, despite having gone through several mp3 players since I first heard it.

Fraggle Rocker 10-28-09, 06:16 PM . . . . songs I cannot relate to seem like a waste of time.Hmmm. Then you don't like symphonies or other instrumental music? Apparently a lot of people feel that way because it's been a long time since a song without vocals made the U.S. charts. I think the last one was "Music Box Dancer," 30 years ago.
I listen to a lot of Spanish-language music and even though I can gabble my way through a conversation it's a lot harder to understand singing, which is not the same as speaking.
I just played a compilation CD called "Arab Groove" and none of the songs was in English.
. . . . "I want you" (Is that a beatles song?) . . . .Yes, from "Abbey Road." It segues right into "She's So Heavy." On the CD I think it's even just a single track, "I Want You - She's So Heavy".
. . . . the Red hot chilli peppers have been around since my childhood . . . .And they've grown and changed as much as you have. "Californication" is nothing like the songs on "Mother's Milk."
Is iPod the hip new name for a stereogram?Never heard of that. Is it a British term? We had hi-fi's in the late 1950s and then when stereophonic recordings came out we just called the playback equipment a "stereo." Before high fidelity they were just "record players."
John, wouldn't it be easier to post the links in the same post instead of one after another?

Not to mention making these threads so loooooong? Surely you could easily paste your URLs into one single word processing document and then copy it into a post when you're ready???
But more importantly, please review my O.P. in this thread. It would be very kind of you, and improve everyone's experience, if you could write a couple of sentences about each song. Unless we've got somebody here who's an invalid or living off unemployment or a kept woman, nobody's going to have the time to check out all of those URLs. It would be really nice if we had some idea what to expect so we could choose which one to try out. I'm not sure I've ever followed one of your links because your presentation leaves so much to be desired.
The reviews in the newspaper don't even give me a URL, but they help me figure out which songs I might like so I track them down on YouTube all by myself.
Cut back on the quantity just a bit and add some quality. You'll probably get a whole lot more action that way.

I actually listen to a lot of soundtracks that don't have vocals, My latest one was of Battlestar Galactica
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcUE_r0VGqY) and my usual picks include anything that sounds grand, epic, or inspiring, such as those from Immediate music.

I listen to a lot of Spanish-language music and even though I can gabble my way through a conversation it's a lot harder to understand singing, which is not the same as speaking.
In the heavy metal genre, I listen to Rammstein, usually I find out what the song is first, but sometimes I've listened to it so often, I can say the words without knowing what they mean, a la Mein herz brenmt

Wow, it is totally different from the slightly more laid back tones that I'm used to from RHCP such as Slow Cheetah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMoqOCPcMRI), but some similarities exist. I think that marks a good band, still having the same essentials whether it be theme or style, but innovating and changing all the same.

I'm listening to NetRock101, an internet radio preset in iTunes, right now, and it's just killing me. I've heard Stabbing Westward, Great White ("Mista Bone"), Dream Theater, Judas Priest ("Turbo Lover"), just endured Doro & Warlock ("Without You"), and now they're playing Ozzy & Lita ("If I Close My Eyes Forever"). A few others that slipped by me, but wow. Oh, right. Helix. Um ... who else, who else? But, yeah. Between nostalgia and cheese, I think I'm drowning.

Fraggle Rocker 12-15-09, 02:12 PM * * * * NOTE FROM THE MODERATOR TO JOHN 99 (and everyone else) * * * *
John, please don't turn this thread into your own personal blog. You've got nine posts in a row in one day, and not a single one of them says anything at all about why you like that particular song. It's one thing to post one link to one song and hope that someone might have the time and inclination to follow it. But you can hardly expect people to be so interested in John99 that they'll follow every link you post like you were their guru and they're your acolytes.
From now on please say something about each song so we can decide whether we want to spend our time checking it out.
In the future, if anyone logs more than one post on this thread in one day, and they don't contain any text but a URL, I will delete them. If you are this enthusiastic about a song, surely you're articulate enough to write one descriptive sentence about it.
This is supposed to be a discussion, not a diary.
Thanks for being good citizens,

That I
Never can say goodbye
No no no no, I

There's a very strange vibration

It says turn around you fool
You know you love her more and more

But there's that same unhappy feeling and there's that anguish, there's that doubt

quantum_wave 01-02-10, 09:03 AM I bought my wife an iPod Nano for Christmas. I loaded her favorite albums the day before, set up Itunes, charged the battery and she loves it. She said ten times how much she loves it and then yesterday she was crying. It had gone dead. Nothing. Push the button, blank screen. Plug it in to the computer, no response. She packed it up in the cute little clear plastic box and slipped the receipt in with it. When I dug out the receipt and was going to return it, it came to life and said, please plug in to power source. She had run the battery down so far that it went into a coma :).
My mp3 player is a cheap Coby 8 gig. I love mine but boy oh boy does the Nano put mine to shame.

Every morning I wake up to this album. It's in Polish; it's a mix of Jazz and some kind of unique pop with a fusion guitar flavor. Through and through there are only maybe 2 songs on the whole disc of which have reduced quality as compared to the rest, though, still good. I've also been listening to a lot recently of
Jim Croce - The Faces I've Been
It has a lot of his short tunes never released on full length albums like; Greenback Dollar, Gunga Din (From the Poem), Charlie Green..., and it includes some interviews with Croce himself - that rascal.

Soulsavers, Broken

Elvis Costello and Allen Tossaint, The River In Reverse
Paul Simon, Surprise
And curious indeed:
Now Playing:
XTC, "The Last Balloon"
On Deck:
Costello & Toussaint, "Six-Fingered Man"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Shame and Fortune"
XTC, "River of Orchids"
Paul Simon, "Everything About It Is A Love Song"
Soulsavers, "Unbalanced Pieces"
People who bitch about shuffle suck.

Then the same thing happened again and so this is the third one with a slightly different name.
But it's a Sticky, so it will always be near the top of the list on the first page of the A&C subforum.
There are only 5 Stickies up there so it should not be very hard to spot!

Fraggle Rocker 02-03-10, 07:10 AM "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"That's a classic. I first heard it sung in 1961 by Canadian folksinger Bonnie Dobson in a solo concert for the students at Caltech.
It was written in 1957 by British folksinger and songwriter Ewan MacColl (Kirsty MacColl's father), one of the many politically-oriented musicians of the day. One version of the story is that a friend challenged him to write a love song with no political overtones. The conventional version says he simply wrote it for his fiance, American folksinger Peggy Seeger (brother of Pete Seeger, an icon of American folk music), who needed a love song for a play she was in.
Singers love this song; even I used to do it back when I could almost sing. In addition to Roberta Flack's cover, myriad others include Johnny Cash, Marianne Faithfull, Leona Lewis, Gordon Lightfoot, Alison Moyet, Aaron Neville, Elvis Presley and the Temptations. Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne sang it as a duet; I'll bet that brought the house down.

Fraggle Rocker 02-03-10, 10:14 AM I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I saw Roberta Flack in concert and enjoyed this song that she sang to us way back when."The First Time" and Flack's signature song "Killing Me Softly with His Song" (by Normal Gibson and Charles Fox, worked up from Lori Liberman's poem "Killing Me Softly with His Blues" and titled after her own different song "Killing Me Softly with His Song," both of which were expressions of Lieberman's effusive reaction to a Don McLean concert) won Grammys for Record Of The Year in 1973 and 1974, respectively. She and U2 are the only artists to win this award back-to-back in two consecutive years.
For me here in Washington, Roberta Flack is a local star. She grew up in Arlington and graduated from Washington's Howard University, having enrolled at 15 on a music scholarship. She is 72 and still performing: she did a duet with Maxwell a few days ago at the 2010 Grammy Awards show.

spidergoat 02-04-10, 04:55 PM Just listening to Hasil Adkins' "The Great Lost Album". He was a fantastic one-man band that played outrageous rock, country, and rockabilly. Usually sounds very drunk. Fraggle Rocker 02-10-10, 04:00 PM I must formally object to this "new" "what's on your iPod thread". It's fundamentally a copy of the old.The old one was just getting too long for good data management. I also wanted to make my stamp as the new Moderator. I really wish people would say something about these songs instead of just posting the title and a URL. Life is way too short to follow every link that pops up on our screens. Besides, SciForums is a discussion board so it would be appropriate for these posts to actually say something!
Also, I'm listening to Nickleback. Okay? And I don't want to hear any of your vicious Yankee criticisms of them, either, because GaGa frigging autotunes. OKAY!? So just - back off.I'm an American and I've got nothing against Nickelback. (Unless I mis-parsed your construction "Yankee criticism.") They're hardly avant-garde, but they're good at what they do, that melodic post-grunge stuff like Creed. I saw them a couple of years ago on a triple bill with Staind, who was actually the band I went to see, and Daughtry, whom I'd never heard of because I don't watch "American Idol" but who really impressed me. Nickelback puts on a good show.
I'm a regular girl-singer junkie: I even have Sporty Spice's solo album and I'm one of three people who know about Sass Jordan, Beth Hart AND Alana Davis. But I must say Lady Gaga leaves me cold. She reminds me of Dido. Give me Alison Moyet. Or better yet, transport me back 35 years so I can have Sandy Denny back.:(
Thanks Fraggle. It's the funniest thing: there just seems to be some general aversion to Nickelback. Can't figure it. It's not like everyone else doesn't - shall we say - produce their music a bit. Ah well.
Girl-singing...ok, I also used to listen to Aqua. Not cause I was a fan, just thought it was sporty and cheery. There, I said it.

Fraggle Rocker 02-11-10, 01:47 PM Thanks Fraggle. It's the funniest thing: there just seems to be some general aversion to Nickelback. Can't figure it. It's not like everyone else doesn't - shall we say - produce their music a bit. Ah well. They're just one of those interchangeable bands that straddles the line between pop and post-grunge. I don't see why anyone who likes the others wouldn't like this one. Their songs don't all sound alike and a few of them actually stand out. That's about all you can expect from a band that's not A-class.
Chad Kroeger is a songwriter, singer and lead guitarist who has already collaborated with several other musicians and writers. He has a solo CD coming out later this year that Wikipedia says will be "darker" than what we're used to, which as a fan of Korn and old Black Sabbath I'm looking forward to. Perhaps he will eventually find his own direction.
Girl-singing...ok, I also used to listen to Aqua. Not cause I was a fan, just thought it was sporty and cheery. There, I said it.I have their CD "Aquarius." Haven't played it in a while and I don't remember it very well, but my notes say that I liked several of the songs well enough to include in one of my compilations.
You probably like Ace of Base and Roxette? Or maybe Drain STH, a tongue-in-cheek all-female Swedish goth band starring Toni Iommi's wife?

Fraggle Rocker 03-26-10, 08:03 AM Lambchop - Paperback BibleIt's a nice enough song, but... Aw, I was hoping it would be Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop, even though his name wasn't spelled that way and it's an unlikely title for a children's song. She was younger than I am when she died of uterine cancer twelve years ago. Even though I'm much too old for her to have been part of my childhood (think Crusader Rabbit and Super Circus), I still miss her (like Jim Henson and Frank Zappa).
Some names should not be re-used.

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary
A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary
The traffic lights they turn up blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags downstream
Cause the life that lived is, is dead
And the wind screams Mary
Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
And with his crutch, its old age, and it's wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

Fraggle Rocker 03-30-10, 06:49 PM The Wayward WindGogi Grant (Myrtle Audrey Arinsberg), 1956! I probably haven't heard that since 1961, when it spuriously made it back onto the top 100. Even though I don't much care for vocal music from before the rock era, I've always had a soft spot for girl singers. I still like some of the ones from that era, like Julie London.
"Gogi" is 85 and still performing.
We should all be so lucky:To be able to earn a living by making people happy. To still be doing it at that age!

Fraggle Rocker 03-31-10, 07:31 AM CrazyOne of my favorites! I've sung it myself, back in my days as a guitar-pickin' folksinger. It was written by Willie Nelson in 1961, when he was hanging out with two other unknown singer-songwriters named Roger Miller ("King of the Road") and Kris Kristofferson ("Me and Bobby McGee").
Patsy Cline didn't want to do it because it was too fast for her style, but her producer came up with the slower arrangement that reached #2 on the country charts and launched Nelson's career. Hot on the heels of her country-pop crossover megahit "I Fall to Pieces," it didn't do any harm to Cline's career either.
Nelson has recorded his song twice. According to Secondhand Songs (http://www.secondhandsongs.com/performance/13025), 81 other covers have been released steadily over the years, including Norah Jones, Crystal Gayle, Bobby Vinton, Shirley Bassey, Four Bitchin' Babes, Julio Iglesias, Diana Krall, Dobie Gray and LeAn Rimes, who sang it at the White House.
It's a staple for country music bar bands and karaoke sessions. Even though Cline's familiar rendition is a country shuffle, it was carefully recorded without a fiddle, steel guitar or other overt trappings of country music and was a big hit on pop radio at a time when the shuffle beat (a fast six-beat with 2 and 5 suppressed, and in the rock era with 4 accented) was still common in rock music. It shows up on virtually every list of "most popular rock and roll songs." One industry survey ranks it as the #1 song on American jukeboxes. Ross Perot used it in his 1992 presidential campaign.
