View Full Version : USA science forum links to Australia.
John Devers 10-20-01, 01:28 PM Hi there I have just discovered your forum and was impressed by your Physics section and have decided to try and link a thread up to both our forums. Ps it's 4 in the morning here so it is a bit slow.
The forum can be found here.

Stryder 10-20-01, 01:44 PM I hope I can welcome you over to Sciforums also, You never know a few of us might crop up sitting in the shadows of your Australian servers in our various Pseudonyms.
I think David W (Porfiry) would mention that although Sciforums is a US server, many people from Europe also adon it (and that's not just myself and others from Great Britain)
I hope to see some great debates, topics and discussion come from the links and perhaps a post or two at this end ;)
John Devers 10-20-01, 02:05 PM Thanks for the welcome Stryderunknown, I'm gong to have to get to bed though, hope to catch up with you later. There will be a few Aussies up in about 3 hours and then we may get some questions or debate.
I know quite a number of people here have wanted to speak to Americans over the past month.
We seem to love our black holes and big bang discussions quite a bit over here as well.
Cheers from Australia.
illuminati 10-20-01, 02:31 PM Hi there, John!
Thanks for pointing out the new forum to us!
And hi to all you awesome Americans out there!
If John keeps talking it up, you might see us around here a lot more often in future :p
-Daniel (illuminati)
Porfiry 10-20-01, 03:31 PM Thanks for linking the two forums. It's always wonderful to have some cross-pollination of ideas.
And yes, the server is US based, but sciforums is distinctly international. I myself am Canadian (though I am seriously looking at Australia as a destination for graduate school -- I might have to ask your opinion about that :)), and a large portion of our members are European.
Enjoy your stay.
I would like to welcome our newest members to Sciforums. John Devers and illuminati.
John, you will find that I made a reply in your thread. Thanks for the link.
Pollux V 10-20-01, 04:36 PM Yeah, welcome illuminati and John Devers. How's the weather in australia? Cold as pluto up here.
chromaphobe 10-20-01, 04:54 PM Followed Johns link to this site.I love this stuff.
I'll be back... :)
Welcome to Sciforums, chromaphobe. We hope you will spend some time with us. Drop in anytime.
Hi folks,
Another Aussie here. Just logged on to the Oz SSSF and found JD's link and thought I'd check you guys out.
I'll have a bit of a look around to get the flavour of your site.
Sarah.J 10-20-01, 06:48 PM Hello Everyone.
I'm Sarah, from the Australian Forum.
This place looks pretty wicked. Thanks for your big welcome.
Make yourselves at home in our forum too.
I'm a high school student, in Tasmania. I'm studying preforming arts and drama at school. It's wicked. I dont actually do any sciences, but I'm really interested anyway.
Check out my web page, to see some pictures of me.

James R 10-20-01, 08:34 PM Hi everybody,
Yes, I'm another Australian taking a quick look at your forum. Looks impressive so far, and gives me a few ideas for possible improvements to our one, which is here:
<a href="http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/" target="_blank">ABC Self-Service Science Forum</a>
Now, let's take a better look at what you've got here...

John Devers 10-21-01, 07:21 AM Hi shrike, it was an absolutely gloriously sunny day in Melbourne today but then I must admit it hailed on me 2 days ago.
Hi Chagur, lol, ooooh I have started a bit of an invasion haven't I:-)
And a big welcome to our junior member James R ;-)
Couldn't resist that one it's an inhouse joke.
I'm off for a read.
Boy, take off and go to sleep and see what happens? Welcome everyone. Normally I would greet each individually but this has happened so fast that all I can seay is welcome everybody!
illuminati 10-21-01, 08:17 AM Solution to the patent overcrowding on the SSSF! Just move 'em all in here!
(To all Americans: if you ever happen to pop by the SSSF during the day, you'll find that it's pretty damned busy...it's pretty much impossible to keep up with all the yakking tht goes on in a day :P)
-Daniel (illuminati)
Just a quick hi from me from <a href="http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/techtalk/">Tech Talk</a> (<a href="http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/">SSSF's</a> spinoff technology forum). Tech Talkers are always willing to answer any technology-related questions that you may have (though for topics such as "virus", it may be best to search through the previous threads!). :)
On another note; The posts at <a href="http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/">SSSF</a>, <a href="http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/techtalk/">TT</a>, <a href="http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/scribblygum/">SG</a> and ABC forums are timestamped UTC (GMT) +10:00 when there isn't daylight saving.
G'day to you, RWW. Welcome to Sciforums. You will find a computer section here that I am sure that you ahve already went to Though it will not be what I have seen at SSSF site.
we aussies have magical sexual powers Awww ... You probably ripped it from the Abo's :D
Glad to see so many of you checking out Sciforums ... Thanks for the connect, J.D.
I knew youall had computers down thataway but didn't realize you had your own forums ;)
Pollux V 10-21-01, 12:32 PM Welcome...again to everybody!
Sarah.J 10-23-01, 03:42 AM i think this forum is pretty cool. It's a lot slower than SSSF, but that's a good thing in a way. It does get a little crowded in there sometimes.
Well that's all i want to say.
:)
:p :) :o :D ;)
these things are cool, we should get them in SSSF.
Bebelina 10-23-01, 06:24 AM They are not so dumb, the australians, I have spoken to a couple of them and they seem pretty allright for being sporns from deported criminals. :D
Welcome! ;)
Be nice to our visitors, Bebelina. I find that they are very good group of folks.
Pollux V 10-23-01, 08:07 AM (sigh) then lol.
Not all of them are criminals kids. Was that a joke?
Oi!

*defensive mode on*
Actually, the spawn of deported criminals form a minority of the current population of Australia. Most of us are spawn of people who came here voluntarily.
*defensive mode off*
You lot had your share of deported criminals too, didn't you?
Ay, we did too.
Only we prefer to refer to them as 'indentured servants'.
More P.C. you know :D
PS Have to excuse Bb, she's Swedish. A yank would never be so uncouth. ;)
Bebelina 10-24-01, 08:27 AM For correcting my miss-spelling. It should of course be spawn, and yes, it was a joke! :D
It was however a joke directed in all kindness to the australians I already know, that has joined us here, as Reign of Error for example.
Ohterwise, if you donīt know me, that statement can of course seem a bit blunt, but has nothing to do with my swedishness, just a manifestation of my clumsyness in humoristic conversation...:p
Reign_of_Error 10-24-01, 09:58 AM Most of us aussies can take a joke :)
Even if the stereotypical image of aussies being descendants of criminals isn't mostly true, its still a comical image :D
Doesn't offend me in the slightest
But you know it wouldn't hey Bebelina :D
James R 10-24-01, 10:21 PM Don't worry, Bebelina. I wasn't offended.
John Devers 10-25-01, 03:54 AM I see you are no junior anymore JR;)
That 48 hour blackout ruined my evil plans:mad:
I'll get there soon though:cool:
John Devers 10-31-01, 08:59 PM G'day all, it's been a week or so so I thought I would bring this post to the top of the list in here and at the Aussie SSSF for those who may have missed it.
Ps. Oh JRrrrrrrrr, check my status now:cool:
Is an AVATAR something like the Australian equivalent to an armadillo? :D
John Devers 10-31-01, 09:47 PM Chargur, I'm not sure, are they considered a pest or protected as a rare species where you are?
There's numerious threads over here on the pesky little devils;)

John,
I can tell you here in Texas, the armadillo is considered a moving speed bump :D
scaevola 11-01-01, 08:44 PM Never bother to ask about the weather in Australia......
The answer is always the same, Beautiful yesterday, Perfect today.
Greetings from the Antipodes to all Canucks and Yanks, Swedes and others.
Why not join our Lively and Speedy forum? Especially our informative TT computer forum
(English is widely spoken in Australia.)
I thought I would add a thought to the Sciforums about our opposites in Australia. They are both friendly and informative. Well worth the visit.
Thanks Wet1 and Boris2 for sending my in the right direction - it seems I didn't know what was going on in my own backyard.
Chagur - you're going to have to behave yourself with your little jabs at Aussies now - It seems that there are more of us here, so be nice.
This is Teri saying Hi from Sydney.
Talk to you all soon.
:) :) :) :)
