View Full Version : What do you name your computer?
05-01-02, 08:35 AM
I'm starting this thread asanother thread is starting to go off topic.
The question is simply, what do you name your computer?
This can be what you call it when it doesn't work, or what you've named it for if it was networked (or if it truly is)
My computer names are Argonaut, Chaos and Oracle. (not the OS)
No prizes for guessing the theme, although when I post at sciforums, it's through Chaos.
Afterall what ever I do on the internet can be the beginning and shaping of my universe.
I can kind of give reasoning to the others, but it was really just to cover Greek Mythology. So Argonaut could be perceived as my original main powerhouse. It's in retirement now, but is still a glimpse of heroic days gone by.
My laptop is Oracle, because I can get information from anywhere, any time. (as long as I take my charger)
My 486x66 use to have a name, but its awaiting renaming. Afterall it's old but could still be of use if I could harness it through linux to Argonaut, but now I'm getting technical.
My network is named something completely different, but I can't tell you that incase you try to netbios your way in there.
Mine is You Slack-Arse Piece Of Shit. It's an AMD K6 200MHz, 96 megs RAM, 6.4 gig hard drive, running Win XP Pro. With 200 MB of space left on the disc.

Mine are called...
in the order that they were purchased.

Ultimate PC. Since computer related things are my main source of entertainment , I sink a ton of money into them (meaning you could call mine a "really blazing fast high end nerd computer")
YEAH...IT SURE WAS.
HERE'S WHAT I POSTED THERE...
this one is(Compaq 933 mhz,512 ddr RAM) "Zion Mainframe".
the other(Dell Laptop)is Enterprise.
Dad calls his as Energizer...
i dont think there's a guy who doesnt name his computer...

Well generally I call these comps at school "Evil Moooo Machines" after their maker, Gateway. But what do I call my computer at home (im at school).... Hmmm I dont really know other than some names below:
^%)#*(@,%$$(*%), #(%*%#*(%*, (%#(%*
These names have been censored.
I suppose Ill call it Silver or LiquidSilver from now on since those are the names I use while playing on line games.

When my computer is working nicely I call it Vex. When it's not I call it a big nasty pile of scrap and threaten it with large smashing things like anvils. :D

InfinityX, referred to under voice command controls as "Jeeves".
Dual G4 running Mac OSX, 1 GB of RAM, 80 GB hard drive space with about 30 GB free.

I havenīt named mine. Shame on me. I will get right on it. But itīs a she, that I know, turqoise and all (Imac) and I have placed a small Ganesh on top and a pink disco ball is hanging just above her. Any suggestions?
I have named by sewing machines though, they are Video-Girl and Snot-Missy. :p
- Groove Machine
- Disco Inferno
Ha ha, you sounded like a Mac user, Bebs!
Thinkpad 600 named 790.
Well, lets see. The 166 is named land mine for the booby traps it has come through. (Not unscathed, I might mention)
The other is named Diaster. (It always finds things and makes a mess of the computer.)

Beb howsabout "Peter the semi-robotic platapus' sister?"
The machine I am using is called Angband and my old machine, in pieces needing a disk and OS, is Mordor. And I've had them longer than that film came out.

Must install SUSE Linux one day.
Negotiating with work to get myself two VAX 4300's and build me a cluster with names shadow:: & vorlon::
The missus may object to the plumbing required for this.
Would like to port seti@home for VAX/VMS
Cool Mo D.
Piece of Crap.
For the first time ever I bleeped something out. I feel so dirty.
Mine is named HAL from "2001: A Space Odessy"
05-01-02, 05:20 PM
Since Win95, I use network and mount drives manually. I don't like long names with space in it, so my computer is named "Ace" and my bro's named "Tiger". There is another one named "ADSL", it was a soft router for quite a while until I bought a ADSL modem/router/hub combo box.
05-01-02, 07:32 PM
The junk one is called HAL (from 2001) and the modestly allright laptop is Hannibal.
05-01-02, 07:38 PM
Today, in the name of the Great Bebelina, Female Messiah, Ruler of the Future World I name you dear computer to.... BabyLon.
May you serve me well and may your life be filled with pleasant experiences and loving kindness.
All is well.
05-01-02, 07:40 PM
Ah, so I guess the sister of 'Pete the semi-robotic platapus' doesn't get yer noodle going, eh bebelina? Well I guess we all have our opinions....
Tyler, we all feel dirty sometimes. I hate to say this but taking a cold shower helps (tee hee hee):D :D
My ruby-red iMac DV is named Frank, because he has red lips and a beauty mark. (Get really high and get to know your iMac ... you'll see it.) His sidekick, Howard, is the external drive.
Frank for Tim Curry as Frank 'N' Furter in Rocky Horror, and Howard for H.P. Lovecraft.
05-01-02, 08:46 PM
I will have to try that Tiassa, but do I have to use the Poopy-Pipe to see the lips??? :D
05-01-02, 08:50 PM
No wait, I can see it already, it has a face!!! With big cute eyes and a small mouth, and even a beauty mark, but with a very, very big forehead!!! :D
I canīt understand that Iīve never seen that before....:bugeye:
05-01-02, 08:54 PM
Well, I have the first version of Imac that came out, if you have a red the lips are bigger.
05-02-02, 05:15 AM
of course my computer is called Cybertron!
of course my computer is called Cybertron
Merlijn, are you particepating in an online game called DOMINION,
particulary realm #355?
There is one cybertron there and I was just wondering....
05-02-02, 01:29 PM
no sorry. But I think I am not the only trnasformers fan :)
but ... cool
05-03-02, 06:12 AM
Damn, you know it never occured to me to name my PC. However, if asked how I refer to it, its either "My Machine" or "Useless f**k" depending on how it's responding to me :p
05-03-02, 06:14 AM
Mine is that slow usless pice of shit
But then it IS only a 133
Give it a whiff of nitrous. It'll either speed up or have a cpu (heart) attack...
I dunno, I just got a new machine and it's not presented enough quirks to beg a name yet.
My old machine started out as "Slick", back when it's 450MHz processor was top of the line and I was so impressed by my 16 meg video card and 96 megs of ram. (Machine before that was a whopping 25 MHz with 4 meg ram). Later he became known as "Max" as his hard drive became fuller and fuller and the games I was playing became too much for it to handle.
I just unplugged Max last week and put a shiny new Dell in his place. So far I've used the inane name "Delly-O" (said in a 50's gangster voice like "daddy-o"), but that's just gonna have to change. Far too stupid. And I'm gonna be networking it, so I better think of a good name soon...
Hubby has two computers he runs for his techno music. Pete, and RePete. :D Not the most original names ever, but sure beats "Delly-O"... :bugeye: :D
Anybody wanna help me name my Dell? It's definitely a guy. (says me. All my machines are male.) He's pretty quick, and has a lovely grey and black case on him. Much prettier then my beige old Max...
I'm thinking a barbarian name might be good...something nice and violent sounding. (It does seem to crunch numbers quite readily...)
maybe Zaragul (Zaraghul)
but my opinion is tht giving your computer a name is a very personal thing and it should be done only by yourself;)
giving your computer a name is a very personal thing and it should be done only by yourself
True enough...but the stuff you post just might give me a great idea, or remind me of something else I've heard that would work. My view of such things is that it will get the name that is appropriate, *how* it gets the name is just details. ;)
~Cupric...believer in Fate
(And, Thor was on my list of possibilities and crossed off already before you posted it. See how that works? *laughs* Thor is an excellent name, but the God is too linked to lightning...lightning and PC's don't mix.)
My tower (whatever it's current physical incarnation may be) is named Dora.
My notebook (ibid) is Mycroft.
My PDA's are Minerva & Athena in chronological order.
My truck's Buck.
05-22-02, 11:32 AM
How 'bout "the ruler of all who do behold" :D
I haven't named mine yet, but I should call it Grandpa because he has ED... He's always down!!!
06-10-02, 06:58 PM
Mine is called Sir Eric of Stop-A-Lot.
I made him a monitor frame so everyone knows his correct name and doesnt just call him 'the computer'.
He has a face, which is the background on my desktop. And yes, I talk to him.
He even has his own folder on the hard drive where he keeps his 'things'...
06-12-02, 03:03 PM
i used to call my old computer ; blue screen of death.
it kept crashing. dont know why; problem with kernel so it was pretty fucked. havent required to call this computer anything. maybe spoke too soon.
06-12-02, 04:55 PM
I know that probably sounds really bad, but its an absolutely beautiful machine. Then, when it won't do as I wish I say something like: "Come on Baby, Come on *%$###@^&86%$#333....." Its like something outta a bad porno. I suppose I shoulda used Hal since my computer has that annoying voice command feature which always manages to get turned on somehow. :bugeye:
06-12-02, 08:14 PM
My computer's name is Hypron. Funk-ay isnt it?
06-12-02, 08:19 PM
Oh we also have Billy. He's got some...ermm...problems though. He's got some severe..disabilities..
07-13-02, 01:51 PM
I named mine:
"WonderJoyMachine" WJM for short. Whu-juh-meh! lol :D
renamed mine from Digital Dust to Electrical Disaster
07-13-02, 11:48 PM
My computers are named Hal 9000, Johnny Five and T-1000
Can ya guess the theme?
Hal 9000 is my powerhouse, he's well-respected and highly honored by the other computers. Something parallel to the real Hal of 2001 happened when this computer was infected and attempted to destroy all data on its hard disk, it was later cured and became quite helpful :). Johnny Five is the rebellious little ragamuffin, his severe disabilities have just been cured with the injection a highly sought after and rare form of RAM that he needed to cure him. Fond memories will always make J-5 a favorite. T-1000 is the middle of the bunch, always determined on killing anyone who stands in his way. Once this computer electrocuted me when I tried to close a certain program that kept opening.
And that is the story of my three computers!
07-14-02, 09:18 AM
My computer lived up to its former name BabyLon a little bit too well.....so I have renamed it, but it's a secret name. :)
I'll quess... Babylon...hmm...next step....Death Star maybe...(if follow the sci-fi line)...if the bible line--linquistic messup?
07-14-02, 02:45 PM
Well it crashed, so I gave it a little more friendly and peaceful name this time. A swedish name, as mundane as they get.
07-16-02, 09:10 PM
Sun - Main workstation running Windows XP
Jupiter - Server running RedHat 7.1. No X.
Pluto - My mother's computer.
Workgroup - Milky Way.
You get the idea. ;)
07-19-02, 05:54 PM
I've just renamed mine to The Blackhole of Dooooom!! (notice the extra o's, heheh), primarily because I just lost a shload of my work.
07-19-02, 06:41 PM
Because sometimes you just have to hit with a sword.
