View Full Version : What do you name your computer?

I'm starting this thread asanother thread is starting to go off topic.

The question is simply, what do you name your computer?

This can be what you call it when it doesn't work, or what you've named it for if it was networked (or if it truly is)

for instance:

My computer names are Argonaut, Chaos and Oracle. (not the OS)

No prizes for guessing the theme, although when I post at sciforums, it's through Chaos.
Afterall what ever I do on the internet can be the beginning and shaping of my universe.

I can kind of give reasoning to the others, but it was really just to cover Greek Mythology. So Argonaut could be perceived as my original main powerhouse. It's in retirement now, but is still a glimpse of heroic days gone by.

My laptop is Oracle, because I can get information from anywhere, any time. (as long as I take my charger)

My 486x66 use to have a name, but its awaiting renaming. Afterall it's old but could still be of use if I could harness it through linux to Argonaut, but now I'm getting technical.

My network is named something completely different, but I can't tell you that incase you try to netbios your way in there.

Ultimate PC. Since computer related things are my main source of entertainment , I sink a ton of money into them (meaning you could call mine a "really blazing fast high end nerd computer")

Well, lets see. The 166 is named land mine for the booby traps it has come through. (Not unscathed, I might mention)

The other is named Diaster. (It always finds things and makes a mess of the computer.)

Mine is named HAL from "2001: A Space Odessy"

daktaklakpak

Since Win95, I use network and mount drives manually. I don't like long names with space in it, so my computer is named "Ace" and my bro's named "Tiger". There is another one named "ADSL", it was a soft router for quite a while until I bought a ADSL modem/router/hub combo box.

My ruby-red iMac DV is named Frank, because he has red lips and a beauty mark. (Get really high and get to know your iMac ... you'll see it.) His sidekick, Howard, is the external drive.

Frank for Tim Curry as Frank 'N' Furter in Rocky Horror, and Howard for H.P. Lovecraft.

thanx,

I dunno, I just got a new machine and it's not presented enough quirks to beg a name yet.

My old machine started out as "Slick", back when it's 450MHz processor was top of the line and I was so impressed by my 16 meg video card and 96 megs of ram. (Machine before that was a whopping 25 MHz with 4 meg ram). Later he became known as "Max" as his hard drive became fuller and fuller and the games I was playing became too much for it to handle.

I just unplugged Max last week and put a shiny new Dell in his place. So far I've used the inane name "Delly-O" (said in a 50's gangster voice like "daddy-o"), but that's just gonna have to change. Far too stupid. And I'm gonna be networking it, so I better think of a good name soon...

Hubby has two computers he runs for his techno music. Pete, and RePete. :D Not the most original names ever, but sure beats "Delly-O"... :bugeye: :D

Anybody wanna help me name my Dell? It's definitely a guy. (says me. All my machines are male.) He's pretty quick, and has a lovely grey and black case on him. Much prettier then my beige old Max...

I'm thinking a barbarian name might be good...something nice and violent sounding. (It does seem to crunch numbers quite readily...)

maybe Venom

but my opinion is tht giving your computer a name is a very personal thing and it should be done only by yourself;)

giving your computer a name is a very personal thing and it should be done only by yourself

True enough...but the stuff you post just might give me a great idea, or remind me of something else I've heard that would work. My view of such things is that it will get the name that is appropriate, *how* it gets the name is just details. ;)

~Cupric...believer in Fate

(And, Thor was on my list of possibilities and crossed off already before you posted it. See how that works? *laughs* Thor is an excellent name, but the God is too linked to lightning...lightning and PC's don't mix.)

Mine is called Sir Eric of Stop-A-Lot.
I made him a monitor frame so everyone knows his correct name and doesnt just call him 'the computer'.
He has a face, which is the background on my desktop. And yes, I talk to him.
He even has his own folder on the hard drive where he keeps his 'things'...

I know that probably sounds really bad, but its an absolutely beautiful machine. Then, when it won't do as I wish I say something like: "Come on Baby, Come on *%$###@^&86%$#333....." Its like something outta a bad porno. I suppose I shoulda used Hal since my computer has that annoying voice command feature which always manages to get turned on somehow. :bugeye:

My computers are named Hal 9000, Johnny Five and T-1000

Can ya guess the theme?

:)

Hal 9000 is my powerhouse, he's well-respected and highly honored by the other computers. Something parallel to the real Hal of 2001 happened when this computer was infected and attempted to destroy all data on its hard disk, it was later cured and became quite helpful :). Johnny Five is the rebellious little ragamuffin, his severe disabilities have just been cured with the injection a highly sought after and rare form of RAM that he needed to cure him. Fond memories will always make J-5 a favorite. T-1000 is the middle of the bunch, always determined on killing anyone who stands in his way. Once this computer electrocuted me when I tried to close a certain program that kept opening.

And that is the story of my three computers!
