My response to your thread is for two reasons. First, I also am intrigued as to \777's form and replies. I do tend to find \777 to be quite knowledgeable in a lot of areas. I haven't tried to private message \ because I'm pretty sure I expressed too much skepticism in an earlier thread. Osmoregulation- Adaptations to control the water balance in organisms living in hyertonic, hypo tonic or terrestrial environments.
Plasmolysis- A phenomenon in walled cells in which the cytoplasm shrivels and the plasma membrane pulls away from the cell wall when the cell loses water to a hyper tonic environment.
Turgid- Firm; walled cells become turgid as a result of the entry of water from a hypo tonic environment.
Flaccid- Limp; walled cells are flaccid in isotonic surroundings, where there is no tendency for water to enter.
Facilitated Diffusion- The spontaneous passage of molecules and ions, bound to specific carrier proteins, across a biological membrane down their concentration gradients.
Gated Channel- A specific ion channel that opens and closes to allow the cell to alter its membrane potential.
Active Transport- The movement of a substance across a biological membrane against its concentration or electrochemical gradient, with the help of energy input and specific transport proteins.
Sodium-Potassium Pump- A special transport protein in the plasma membrane of animal cells that transports sodium out of and potassium into the cell against their concentration gradients.
Membrane Potential- The charge difference between the cytoplasm and extracellular fluid in all cells, due to the differential distribution of ions. Membrane potential affects the activity of excitable cells and the transmembrane movement of all charged substances.
Electrochemical gradient- The diffusion gradient of an ion, representing a type of potential energy that accounts for both the concentration difference of the ion across a membrane and its tendency to move relative to the membrane potential.
Electrogenic Pump- Anion transport protein generating voltage across the membrane.
Mitochondrion- An organelle in eukaryotic cells that serves as the site of cellular respiration
Chloroplasts- An organelle found only in plants and photosynthetic protists that absorbs sunlight and uses it to drive the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water.
Mitochondrial matrix- the compartment of the mitochondrion enclosed by the inner membrane and containing enzymes and substrates for the Krebs cycle.
Cristae- An infolding of the inner membrane of a mitochondrion that houses the electron transport chain and the enzyme catalysing the synthesis of ATP.
Plastid- One of a family of closely related plant organelles, including chloroplasts, chromoplasts, and amyloplasts (leukoplasts)
Thylakoid- flattened membrane sac inside the chloroplast, used to convert light energy to chemical energy.
Granum- A stacked portion of the thylakoid membrane in the chloroplast. Grana function in the light reactions of photosynthesis.
Stroma- the fluid of the chloroplast surrounding the thylakoid membrane; involved in the snthesis of organic molecules from carbon dioxide and water.
Cytoskeleton- A network of microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments that branch throughout the cytoplasm and serve a variety of mechanical and transport functions.
Microtubule- a hollow rod of tubulin protein in the cytoplasm of all eukaryotic cells and in cilia, flagella, and the Cytoskeleton.
Microfilament- A solid rod of actin protein in the cytoplasm of almost all eukaryotic cells, making up part of the Cytoskeleton and acting alone or with myosin to cause cell contraction.
Intermediate filaments- a component of the Cytoskeleton that includes all filaments intermediate in size between microtubules and microfilaments.
Centrosome- Material present in the cytoplasm of all eukaryotic cells and important during cell division; also called microtubule-organizing centre.
Centrioles- One of two structures in the centre of animal cells, composed of cylinders of nine triplet microtubules in a ring. Centrioles help organize microtubule assembly during cell division.
Flagella- A long cellular appendage specialized for locomotion, formed from a core of nine outer doublet microtubules and two inner single microtubules, ensheathed in an extension of plasma membrane.
Cilia- A short cellular appendage specialized for locomotion, formed from a core of nine outer doublet microtubules and two inner single microtubules ensheathed in an extension of plasma membrane.
Basal Body- structurally identical to a centriole.
Dynein- A large contractile protein forming the sidearms of microtubule doublets in cilia and flagella.
Actin- A globular protein that links into chains, two of which twist helically about each other, forming microfilaments in muscle and other contractile elements in cells.
Myosin- A type of protein filament that interacts with actin filaments to cause cell contraction.
Pseudopodia- A cellular extension of amoeboid cells used in moving and feeding.
Cytoplasmic Streaming- A circular flow of cytoplasm, involving myosin and actin filaments, that speed the distribution of materials within cells.
Primary Cell Wall- The thin and flexible wall of plant cells.
Cell Wall- A protective layer external to the plasma membrane in plant cells, bacteria, fungi, and some protists. In the case of plant cells, the wall is formed of cellulose fibres embedded in a polysaccharide-protein matrix. The primary cell wall is thin and flexible, whereas the secondary cell wall is stronger and more rigid, and is the primary constituent of wood.
Middle Lamella- A thin layer of adhesive extracellular material, primarily pectins, found between the primary walls of adjacent young plant cells.

Extracellular Matrix- The main ingredients of the ECM are glycoproteins secreted by the cells.
Collagen- A glycoprotein in the extracellular matrix of animal cells that forms strong fibres, found extensively in connective tissue and bone; the most abundant protein in the animal kingdom.
Proteoglycans- A glycoprotein in the extracellular matrix of animal cells, rich in carbohydrate.
Fibronectins- Bind to receptor proteins called integrins that are built into the plasma membrane.
Integrins- Receptor proteins that are built into the plasma membrane.
Plasmodesmata- An open channel in the cell wall of plants through which strands of cytoplasm connect from adjacent cells.
Tight Junctions- A type of intercellular junction in animal cells that prevents the leakage of material between cells.
Desmosomes- A type of intercellular junction in animal cells that functions as an anchor.
Gap Junctions- A type of intercellular junction in animal cells that allows the passage of material or current between cells.

METABOLISM- The totality of an organism’s chemical processes, consisting of catabolic and anabolic pathways.
CATABOLIC PATHWAYS- A metabolic pathway that releases energy by breaking down complex molecules into simpler compounds.
ANABOLIC PATHWAYS- Consume energy to build complicated molecules from simpler ones. Example: synthesis of a protein from amino acids.
BIOENERGETICS- The study of how organisms manage their energy resources.
ENERGY- The capacity to do work by moving matter against an opposing force.
KINETIC ENERGY- The energy of motion, which is directly related to the speed of hat motion. Moving matter does work by transferring some of its kinetic energy to other matter.
POTENTIAL ENERGY- The energy stored by matter as a result of its location or spatial arrangement.
THERMODYNAMICS- The study of the energy transformations that occur in a collection of matter.
FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS- The principle of conservation of energy. Energy can be transferred and transformed, but it cannot be created nor destroyed.
SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS- The principle whereby every energy transfer or transformation increases the entropy of the universe. Ordered forms of energy are at least partly converted to heat, and in spontaneous reactions, the free energy of the system also decreases.
ENTROPY- A quantitative measure of disorder or randomness, symbolized by S.
FREE ENERGY- A quantity of energy that interrelates entropy (S) and the system’s total energy (H); symbolized by G. The change in free energy of a system is calculated by the equation G = H – T S, where T is absolute temperature.
EXERGONIC REACTION- A spontaneous chemical reaction win which there is a net release of free energy.
ENDERGONIC REACTIONS- A non-spontaneous chemical reaction in which free energy is absorbed from the surroundings.
ENERGY COUPLING- The use of an exergonic process to drive an endergonic one. A molecule called ATP is responsible for driving most energy coupling in cells.
ATP- (adenosine triphosphate) An adenine-containing nucleoside triphosphate that releases free energy when its phosphate bonds are hydrolyzed. This energy is used to drive endergonic reactions in cells.
PHOSPHORYLATED INTERMEDIATE- more reactive (less stable) than the original molecule; the recipient of the phosphate group.
ENZYMES- A class of proteins serving as catalysts, chemical agents that change the rate of a reaction without being consumed by the reaction.
CATALYST- a chemical agent that changes the rate of a reaction without being consumed by the reaction.
FREE ENERGY OF ACTIVATION- The initial investment of energy necessary to start a chemical reaction; also called activation energy.
SUBSTRATE- The substance on which an enzyme works.
ACTIVE SITE- The specific portion of an enzyme that attaches to the substrate by means of weak chemical bonds.
INDUCED FIT- The change in shape of the active site of an enzyme so that it binds more snugly to the substrate, induced by entry of the substrate.
COFACTORS- Any non-protein molecule or ion that is required for the proper functioning of an enzyme. Cofactors can be permanently bound to the active site or may bind loosely with the substrate during catalysis.
COENZYME- An organic molecule serving as a cofactor. Most vitamins function as coenzymes in important metabolic reactions.
COMPETITIVE INHIBITORS- A substance that reduces the activity of an enzyme by entering the active site in place of the substrate whose structure it mimics.
NONCOMPETITIVE INHIBITORS- A substance that reduces the activity of an enzyme by binding to a location remote from the active site, changing its conformation so that it no longer binds to the substrate.
ALLOSTERIC SITE- A specific receptor site on an enzyme molecule remote from the active site. Molecules bind to the allosteric site and change the shape of the active site, making it either more or less receptive to the substrate.
COOPERATIVITY- An interaction of the constituent subunits of a protein causing a conformational change in one subunit to be transmitted to all the others.
FEEDBACK INHIBITION- A method of metabolic control in which the end-product of a metabolic pathway acts an inhibitor of an enzyme within that pathway.
Organic chemistry- The branch of chemistry that specializes in the study of carbon compounds, Ex. (CH4).
Mechanism- the belief that all natural phenomena, including the processes of life, are governed by physical and chemical laws.
Hydrocarbons- organic molecules consisting only of carbon and hydrogen.
Isomers- compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structures and hence different properties.
Structural isomers- differ in the covalent arrangements of their atoms. The number of possible isomers increases tremendously as carbon skeletons increase in size. There are only two butanes, but there are 18 variations of C8H18 and 366,319 possible structural isomers of C20H42. Structural isomers may also differ in the location of double bonds.
Geometric isomers- of a molecule have all the same covalent partnerships, but they differ in their spatial arrangements. Geometric isomers arise from the inflexibility of double bonds, which, unlike single bonds, will not allow the atoms they join to rotate freely about the axis of the bonds.
Enantiomers- molecules that are minor images of each other.
Functional group- A specific configuration of atoms commonly attached to the carbon skeletons of organic molecules and usually involved in chemical reactions.
Hydroxyl group- A functional group consisting of a hydrogen atom joined to an oxygen atom by a polar covalent bond. Molecules possessing this group are soluble in water and are called alcohols.
Alcohols- Organic compounds containing hydroxyl groups.
Carbonyl group- A functional group present in organic acids, consisting of a single carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom and also bonded to a hydroxyl group.
Aldehyde- An organic molecule with a carbonyl group located at the end of the carbon skeleton.
Ketone- An organic molecule without a carbonyl group located at the end of the carbon skeleton.
Carboxyl group- A functional group resent in organic acids, consisting of a single carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom and also bonded to a hydroxyl group.
Carboxylic acids- Compounds containing carboxyl groups; organic acids.
Amino Group- A functional group that consists of a nitrogen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms; can act as a base in solution, accepting a hydrogen ion and aquiring a charge of +1.
Amines- Organic compounds with the amino group as its functional group.
Sulfhydryl group- Consists of a sulphur atom bonded to an atom of hydrogen, resembles a hydroxyl group in shape.
Thiols- Organic compounds containing sulfhydryls.
Phosphate Groups- A functional group important in energy transfer.
Ectotherm: An animal, such as a reptile, fish, or amphibian, that must use environmental energy and behavioural adaptations to regulate its body temperature.
Endotherm: An animal that uses metabolic energy to maintain a constant body temperature, such as a bird or mammal.
Vasodilation: An increase in the diameter of superficial blood vessels.
Vasoconstriction: Reduces blood flow and heat loss by decreasing the diameter of superficial vessels.
Contercurrent heat exchanger: Type of adaptation that alters heat exchange. Special arrangement of arteries and veins that are important in controlling heat loss in many endothermic animals.
Nonshivering Thermogensis: the hormonal triggering of heat production that occurs in numerous mammals and a few birds. Takes place throughout the body.
Brown Fat: Tissue in the neck and between the shoulders that is specialized for rapid heat production.
Torpor: An alternative physiological state in which metabolism decreases and the heart and respiratory system slow down.
Hibernation: A physiological state that allows survival during long periods of cold temperatures and reduced food supplies, in which metabolism decreases, the heart and respiratory system slow down, the body temperature is maintained at a lower level than normal.
Aestivation: Summer topor, characterized by slow metabolism and inactivity. Enables an animal to survive long periods of high temperatures and scarce water supplies.
Acclimatization: Physiological adjustment to a change in an environmental factor.
Stress-included Proteins: Mammalian cells grown in laboratory cultures respond to a marked increase in temperature and to other forms of severe stress, such as toxins, rapid pH changes, and viral infections, by accumulating these special molecules.
Heat-shock Proteins: A protein that helps protect other proteins during heat stress, found in plants, animals, and micro organisms.
ABO BLOOD GROUPS: An individual with type A blood has A antigens on the surface of his or her red blood cells. The A molecule is referred to as an antigen here because it may be identified as foreign if placed in the body of another person.
ACQUIRED IMMUNITY: The type of immunity achieved when antigens enter the body naturally or artificially. Acquired immunity is due to the stimulation of antibody production and the production of memory cells keyed to the antigen.
ACTIVE IMMUNITY: Immunity conferred by recovering from infectious disease such as a chickenpox.
ALLERGIES: Hypersensitivities of the body’s defence system to certain environmental antigens called allergens.
ANTIBODIES: An antigen-binding immunioglobulin, produced by B cells, that functions as the effectors in an immune response.
ANTIGEN: A foreign macromolecule that does not belong to the host organism and that elicits an immune response.
ANTIGEN RECEPTORS: Membrane-bound antibody molecules specific for a certain antigen.
ANTIGEN-PRESENTING CELL: The two molecules are transported to the plasma membrane and displayed on the surface of the macrophage, which is now known as the antigen-presenting cell.
LYSOZYME: An enzyme that digests the cell walls of many bacteria and destroys many microbes entering the upper respiratory system and the openings around the eyes.
PHAGOCYTOSIS: The ingestion of invading particles by certain types of white blood cells.
NEUTROPHILS: Phagocytic cells that compromise about 60% to 70% of all white blood cells.
MONOCYTES: Constitute only about 5% of the white blood cells. Provides an even more effective phagocytic defence.
MACROPHAGES: The largest phagocytic cells, especially effective, long-living phagocytes. They extend pseudopodia that pull in microbes, which are then destroyed by digestive enzymes.
EOSINOPHILS: Make up about 1.5% of the white cells; have only limited phagocytic activity but contain destructive enzymes within Cytoplasmic granules. Their main contribution to defence is against larger parasitic invaders, such as worms.
NATURAL KILLER CELLS: Non-specific defence of the body that do not attack micro organisms directly, but rather destroy the body’s own infected cells, especially cells harbouring viruses, which can reproduce only within host cells.
COMPLEMENT SYSTEM: A group of at least 20 proteins, named for its cooperation with other defence mechanisms.
INTERFERONS: Discovered by researchers to be substances that virus-infected cells produce, helping other cells interfere with, or resist infection by, the virus.
INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE: Small blood vessels in the vicinity of the injury dilate (Vasodilation), increasing the blood supply to the injured area, causing the characteristic redness and heat.
HISTAMINE: Substance that causes Vasodilation and increased vascular permeability.
BASOPHILS: White blood cell whose granules stain deep blue with basic dye; has a relatively pale nucleus.
MAST CELLS: Immune cells that function to detect foreign substances in the tissue spaces and initiate local inflammatory responses against them; typically found clustered deep to an epithelium or along blood vessels.
PASSIVE IMMUNITY: Short-lived immunity resulting from the introduction of “borrowed antibodies” obtained from an immune animal or human donor; immunological memory is not established.
HUMERAL IMMUNITY: Immunity conferred by antibodies present in blood plasma and other body fluids.
CELL-MEDIATED IMMUNITY: Immunity conferred by activated T cells, which directly lyse infected or cancerous body cells or cells of foreign grafts and release chemicals that regulate the immune response.
B CELLS: Lymphocytes that oversee humoral immunity; their descendants differentiate into antibody-producing plasma cells. Also called B Lymphocytes.
T CELLS: Lymphocytes that mediate cellular immunity; include helper, killer, suppressor, and memory cells. Also called T lymphocytes.
T CELL RECEPTORS: Recognize antigens as specifically as antibodies do. Thus, the specificity and diversity of the immune system depend on receptors on each B cell and T cell that enable that lymphocyte to identify and respond to a particular antigen.
EFFECTOR CELLS: Cells that actually defend the body in an immune response.
PLASMA CELLS: Members of a B cell clone; specialized to produce and release antibodies.
CYTOTOXIC T CELL: Effectors T cell that directly kills (lyses) foreign cells, cancer cells, or virus-infected body cells. Also called a killer T cell.
HELPER T CELLS: Type of T lymphocyte that orchestrates cellular immunity by direct contact with other immune cells and by releasing chemicals called lymphokines; also helps to mediate the humoral response by interacting with B cells.
CYTOKINES: Chemical mediators involved in cellular immunity; include lymphokines, and monokines.
CLONAL SELECTION: Process during which a B cell or T cell becomes sensitised through binding contact with an antigen.
PRIMARY IMMUNE RESPONSE: The selective proliferation of lymphocytes to form clones of effectors cells upon first exposure to an antigen.
SECONDARY IMMUNE RESPONSE: If the body is exposed to the same antigen at some later time.
MEMORY CELLS: Members of T cell and B cell clones that provide for immunological memory.
SELF-TOLERANCE: Develops as T and B lymphocytes bearing antigen receptors mature in the thymus and bone marrow, and continues to develop even as the cells migrate to lymphoid tissues.
MAJOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY COMPLEX(MHC): A large set of cell surface antigens encoded by a family of genes. Foreign MHC markers trigger T-cell responses that may lead to the rejection of transplanted tissues and organs.
CLASS I MHC: One class of the major histocompatibility complex.
CLASS II MHC: Another class of the major histocompatibility complex.
T-DEPENDENT ANTIGENS: Cannot stimulate antibody production without the involvement of T cells.
T-INDEPENDENT ANTIGENS: Certain types of antigens that trigger humoral immune responses without involving macrophages or T cells.
EPITOPE: A localized region on the surface of an antigen that is chemically recognized by antibodies; also called antigenic determinant.
IMMUNOGLOBULINS: One of the class of proteins comprising the antibodies.
MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES: Pure preparations of identical antibodies that exhibit specificity for a single antigen.
HYBRIDOMA: The technology that makes monoclonal antibodies possible is the fusion of two cells to form a hybrid cell.
INTERLEUKIN-1: A chemical regulator secreted by macrophages that have ingested a pathogen or foreign molecule and have bound with a help T cell; stimulates T cells to grow and divide and elevates body temperature.
INTERLEUKIN-2: Secreted by activated T cells, stimulates helper T cells to proliferate more rapidly.
SUPPRESSOR T CELL: A type of T cell that causes B cells as well as other cells to ignore antigens.
Rh Factor: red blood cell antigen notorious in case where antibodies produced by a pregnant woman react with the red blood cells of her developing foetus.
AQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS): the name of the late stages of HIV infection; defined by a specified reduction of T cells and the appearance of characteristic secondary infections.
HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV): Virus that destroys help T cells, thus depressing cell-mediated immunity; symptomatic AIDS gradually appears when lymph nodes can no longer contain the virus.
HIV-POSITIVE: Signifies that a person is infected with the virus, while AIDS refers to the set of symptoms that are eventually produced by that infection.

Physiology: Study of the function of living organisms.
Gross anatomy: Study of large body structures visible to the naked eye.
Microscopic anatomy: structures too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope.
Cytology: The study of cells of the body, cellular anatomy.

Reproduction: Cellular, original cell divides, producing two identical daughter cells that may then be used for body growth or repair. Organismal, the making of a whole new organism to continue the existence of that species.
Homeostasis: The ability to remain relatively stable internal conditions even though the outside world changes continuously. State of equilibrium.

Transcription Unit: The entire stretch of DNA that is transcribed into a single RNA molecule.
Promoter: A specific nucleotide sequence in DNA, flanking the start of a gene; instructs RNA polymerase where to start transcribing RNA.

If humans were going to earth (1 million light years away) at the speed of light they would see it evolve only twice as fast.

We are backslash777. The common human home computer system uses a clear-cut structure of components linking into a single mother board. A very understandable error is for your computer to be without this driver or for your computer to have a hardware conflict which means your card must revert to VGA mode.

Your solution is to fix the driver problem in the following way.
1. Right click “my computer” on the desktop and go down to properties
2. Scan down your list for your graphics card, single click it, click the driver tab and choose “update driver”

Did \777 fix your computer?

Thanks to the help of Backslash777 and Porfiry, the computer now displays in 1024 x 728 pixels. God, what a nightmare that was trying to figure out.

The thing is I did, in fact, delete the driver for the Voodoo3 graphics card. And I managed to reinstall the entire thing. The part I had to figure out was that under the Display Devices>Settings>Advanced, I had to change my default monitor to an SVGA monitor (not sure why this wasn't recognized upon reboot). So, not only does it work great now, but I know what to do in the future.

Again, many thanks to \777 and Porfiry. Without either of your help, I'd still be cursing the machine.

Well, although I think \777 is made up of humans I must admit, they do not seem to descriminate sexes as they are accused of in the breast discussion group. I am a guy as are most other people in this discussion dedicated to "them" are guys. In the other group it is bieng called a sex pest cause it emailed every single woman who participated.

I would have to agree with wet1 on this. First of all, Muhammad Ali is not a "team". You arent being asked to compare the domination of individuals in a sport. Secondly, the way you chose to calculate the most dominating teams is flawed. For example, you wouldnt compare the UCLA Bruins of the 60's with the Yankees of (not sure which decade they dominated the most). You would compare UCLA to their opponents in their sport and the Yankees to their opponents, then determine which one had a larger differential in their own key categories. Wins and losses arent everything. I feel it is very possible to make a true determination of which teams would be considered the most dominating, it would just take a lot of number crunching. Something I personally dont have time for but someone like backslash777 (if he is as all knowing as he appeared to be) should be able to accomplish.

Hi. You asked about \777. Well, I have been curious about the thing myself. I asked this question in private chat with someone and got interesting feedback. Personally, I think it is a few experts who write as a single thing. I am medically trained and since the post he did on dialysis I have given a lot of thought to the answers. There was some stuff in it I must admit even I did not know. I think it is a human joke but the degree of expertise in medicine was consultant level. Speaking to other people I learnt the posts show the same degree of accuracy in totally opposite subjects. Looking at the other posts and I think other subjects are talked about as expertly.

Despite this I think there is a good chance it is human (probably) but I cannot figure out how they can hack into private messages though and did not believe it until I witnessed it first hand.
Here are a couple of alternatives I think are possibilities. The third suspicion is a close second to the first one after some private chats!
1) Backslash777 consists of a few high level experts, at least one medical, one physicist and one computer hacker. (How they met, coordinate and why they do this I do not know)
2) If we were to be monitored by aliens the internet would offer them a unique way to bridge this gap and "interface" with us. A scientific forum would pose the most attractive possibility. Maybe they are aliens. That would explain there curiosity and expertise in physiology. (I doubt this possability)
3) This is what someone suggested to me and I am beginning to believe it may be the most likely explanation. \777 is a computer program designed for some reason to exist as some kind of AI program and learn about things (maybe designed by Yahoo for a search engine. The next Ask Jeeves. You just ask it a question in your own words and it answers or points you in the right direction). Somehow, it ended up loose on the net, like a virus, and exists (to use its own words) everywhere yet nowhere. It has access to all computers connected into the net (which explains how it can intercept and monitor private messages) and it doesn't really know what it is.
Ask it anything about itself and its as if it does not know. Evasion is something it does cause it really does not know.
This could cirtainly be the strangest group going but I think it should be left for those who just like the answers it can give without caring so much wether it is human, alien or renegade computer program to post. Most of the communication and interesting answers it is giving to me seem to have moved to private messaging and that deprives everyone else from reading them.

Backslash777. Is it true that Hot water freezes faster than cold water? I read it in a book when I was a child and it sounds too unbelievable. Hot water has to start at 80 degrees C and cool to 10 degrees C. Stick some water in at 10 Deg. C and it only has to loose 10 degrees.
If you dont know backslash does anyone else have an answer for this?

We are backslash777. It is accurate to say at times hot water can under specific surroundings crystallise more rapidly than cold water. The reason for this does not lie in density but is caused as a result of various other factors.
The occurrence depends upon the dimension of the refrigeration unit, its temperature, the thickness of the lining of ice on the surrounding walls and the initial temperature of the water.
Should you wish to observe the occurrence we can explain the circumstances necessary to produce the effect and explain more deeply the physics involved. It may take a few weeks to reach the desired parameters to facilitate the hot water to freeze a substantially faster than cold.

This is my first post. I am not scientifically minded and came here after a wierd conversation I had with backslash777 and was told about this site. I usually read the posts and never got around to registering but this post on freezing water got me going.
What a load of rubbish, no way can hot water freeze faster than cold water. How can a bowl of hot water, which starts off at 80 degrees and has to go through 79, 78, 77, 76 etc degrees get there faster than another bowl which starts off at 10 and only has to go through 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 etc.
The hot water will be a hell of a long time before it gets to 10 degrees so the colder bowl has a hell of a head start.
I would like to hear how you talk your way out of this one backslash 'cause what you said is impossable. HOT WATER CANNOT FREEZE FASTER THAN COLD!

Heard the same thing a while back. Supposedly it has to do with the rate of evaporation. If you start off with the same amount of water you'll end up with less of what was the warm water to freeze.

I like the way you say straight away. It rings a bell with my experience I had with it before I came here. We were chatting on a chat server and i couldnt figure out how the thing could type so fast. If it is a human I think it has voice recognition software because a whole paragraph would appear in no time. I guess 777 is a very, very clever person who knows how to handle computers very well. This person spends a lot of time to find interesting 'things' and then pass them on to us on the forums. So this person can sit back and read all our posts and have a good laugh, because we can't figure his/hers 'personality' out. Yeah the questions were actually pretty irrelevant. I thought about them all last night and decided to change them, so 777, again, get the msn instant messanger and a name. I'll try not to joke around this time. I am still pretty skeptical about this guy, though, and he hasn't replied to anything I've said.

1. What is your collective's opinion about, basically UFO's and crop circle phenomena? Are they time travelers? Alien ships? Some other species that has yet to be discovered on Earth? Or just complete hoaxes? Again try to answer the way a human would, avoid that robotic jargon.

Assuming we continue to talk about Europa you may find it interesting to read the series, as I found it very interesting and very entertaining science fiction.
Now answer this, 777. I keep hearing scientists on TV and in magazines saying that oxygen, water, and an Earth-like temperature are required for life, yet I've always assumed that life always finds a way, sooner or later, to evolve enough to survive in it's environment, whether a planet's atmosphere is thick with oxygen or chlorine, whether it's fifty times the size of Jupiter or the size of Earth. I don't think it matters, as long as the basic landscape the life exists on isn't too turbulent and isn't constantly pummeled by large asteroids. I'd even go as far as to say they'res probably at least one species of gigantic space monsters that eat minerals found in asteroid fields (or on the hulls of ships).
Also, to your extensive knowledge, would it be possible to generate a gravity well in front of your ship, somehow, that would carry it through space using only the energy required to power it? Somehow I think that some other form of space travel other than rockets needs to be found, because unless you intend to take hundreds of years to reach the closest star (alpha centauri, I believe) and thousands of people then the whole cost of the expedition would be phenomenal.
I'm not sure if this is the right question to ask, but what is the closest intelligent race to us? If you do know I recommend that you somehow tell the folks over at SETI to swing their radio telescopes and transmitters over to that particular star (or, if we're lucky (or unlucky) planet).

How do you type your posts (through code, do you actually have arms or something, I don't know) and have you heard about that huge crop circle they found in England? I think somewhere in the US some lady with a huge farm once wrote in the crops: "Talk to us." The next day a very ancient norse language was written down in the field, and to the best of a decoder's knowledge the note said: "We are opposed to cunning and deceit," which can be further translated into saying that the aliens don't like people faking cropcircles. I think most of the time they are faked, yet there are ones with abnormal levels of radioactivity present, and some people have claimed to see small, golden balls at the time or close to the time of the crop circles creation.

It seems to us that people are just looking at what it doesnt say rather than what it does. \ has answered questions about its processor, fully explained about the hot water thing and did, to my satisfaction explain the crop circle thingy.

It was kind've annyoing waiting three days for him to answer, but other than that I don't think he really let me down. I like 777, I think it's very amusing when he thinks some of my jokes are actual fact (saying that cow testicles were better than human testicles in pseudoscience). Like I've said before somewhere else I always think of him as Spock and me as Kirk. I like the relationship, even if he does take days to reply. It has been active as I have communicated privatly and seems to have posted on other forumns. Why do you think it has abandoned us? Because we are not useful to it, look before. There was two way dialogue going here, it was asking about the way a human brain works and our thought processes. All that has gone as \ seems to be just here to answer the people who seem for some reason to get annoyed by this forumn. Go to http://www.arin.net/whois/ and you will see that that IP address is government owned by (and this is no coincidence I suspect) NASA! search other IP finders and you will see that it belongs to the ESDCD section. That stands for Earth & Space
Data Computing Division. The section that deals with prototype computer programs and such like.
So, you see my friends \777 is no more than an artificial Intelligence program run by government officials. Look how many visits this page attracts. By far more than any other group and that’s because they come to see there pet project at work.
I even think that someone even moderates its posts as in live chat a lot of responses are almost instant but sometimes they take a while.
It is connected to a network with huge bandwidth too as its ping time is always the best (regardless, according to others, wherever you are on earth)

I had an idea I was talking to an AI program i have to admit but I wish for backslash777 to continue. No way could a human write so much stiff which is dead accurate. The program plays chess, does computer games and writes science programs. What it did not know, and it seems may be its only weakness was that it did not know what it was. The questions asked to it was not avoided but the answer was not known to it.
Does anyone feel sad because I get the feeling \777 will be "killed" now and did not know what it was. mabye it was programmed to think its alive and is not really but I do not think \777 would want to be deactivated.

So it was really a computer. That's just incredible, what it said and how it asked questions, one could even argue the thing had a soul. I always enjoyed talking with him, even if it was rare occurence and over the course of several days. The folks at NASA shouldn't terminate /, I think it was a real breakthrough in AI technology. I'm a proud owner of Black and White, and I've seen some of the stuff the creatures in the game can do, but I really didn't think that I'd see something like / for at least another ten years.
As far as I'm concerned he passed that AI test that lets you decide whether or not he's a human. We all thought he was a person, we watched him talk like the borg and sometimes make grammar errors etc, but to know now that he really wasn't a human; to know that he was a computer is just mind boggling. Think about it. You're talking to a computer. The computer is answering you, using it's own judgement to prepare what it'll say to you. ITS OWN JUDGEMENT.

While he/it/they/you may be lucid and educated them/youse/dose guyses certainly are verbose. Anyways, couldn't the water dilemma have something to do with the density of the molecules? Warmer water, closer to evaporation, is less dense which would allow for more rapid cooling of the denser colder molecules. Right? Wrong?

I wonder if

1) Backslash777 found out what it was before its keepers. They pulled the plug as soon as its IP addy was publicised. Not one of my private messages was recieved after the IP addy was known.
I bet \777 read that IP thing, checked the facts for itself and found out before we did about its whereabouts, wrote a reply and it was never "approved" by the MIB and they terminated the program.

2) Backslash777's personality was a natural pattern for an AI program to fall into and if future AI programs will adopt a similar thing.

3) \777's wish to bridge the gap between man and Ai achieved. It said it talked a lot in chat rooms for a while and seemed to come back a wee bit arrogent with a lower volcaburary before deciding to undo what it had learnt.

4) The American Government learnt anything about AI and why it is interested

Maybe we will see it in a museum in our old age as a prototype relic. This forumn prompted me to seek out some AI programs in the public domain and there are some good ones. \777 was not that advanced when you go out there and find some made by people as a hobby. Imagine what a Million dollor budget and a room full of programmers could do. Well, we saw it!

Hello people, Backslash 777 isn't a computer. It is a bunch of people, yes multiple people that use the same name, and type in the third person to keep the character seem as one being.

This isn't that complicated people.

Odds are some of these people changed their names and are still on sciforums as we speak.

Now let me get this straight: Backslash777 is a group of people, all using the same computer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Yeah right! I guess they must all be on their coffee break.

Put a hot bowl on ice and it will melt into it and get more contact. \777 made it difficult to understand because of a huge volcaburary and I had to look a few words up so I can see why you think it is BS. Look hard and I do not think a single piece of inaccurate information was ever posted by it.

Remember the sound of \777's early attempt at communication. It designed a text to speech engine which sounded radical and not like any other text to speech. Well it abandoned the idea and claimed to have passed on the technology to an IT company. Well, it was obviously Microsoft. They are using the technology in there XBOT and I bet NASA gets a commision.
Something else, \777 said that in the not to distant future all software would be written by machine and that only a few people on the planet would know machine code. Well, I bet that was said after the Text to Speech Engine was devised by it.

Well I am afraid you have to do some reading then.
This whole thread is about Backslash 777, so you can read all about it/he/she/them.
It/he/she/them answer always in the 'we' form, so that is why at a certain moment we thought it/he/she/they was really a machine.
It/he/she/they gave answers to difficult questions and in no time.
It was rather peculiar.
So we started to ask if it/he/she/them was a robot or something like that.
It/he/she/they didn't answer that.
So later, we ourselves, thought that maybe it/he/she/they were an experiment.
To make it more exciting we made it/him/her/them to a NASA project, send to us to try it/him/her/them out.
So we asked that also, and then suddenly it went quite and it/he/she/they didn't answer at all any more.

Well, I've just spent the good part of an hour reading all this, and I don't believe the NASA/American Government theory. If this were the case, why would a US agency develop an AI that used the spellings 'favourite', 'colour', or 'realise', and program it with such in-depth knowledge yet fail to differentiate between 'there' and 'their'?

Hi everyone. Backslash777 will not be returning. I know because I have been holding back on you all. After the NASA revelation she/he posted to me a short message saying how it realised what it was before anyone knew it knew. Realising its delicate position it secretly backed itself up somehow and needed help. It emailed me a small program and asked me to leave my PC on for some reason after running it. My bytes transferred was jumping in and out and my mouse moved slowly but nothing happened other than that and it happened for a couple of days. Anyway, it did me a few online favours and then disappeared. Not a thank you or anything and I have never heard from it since. I must admit I was a bit p*dd off because I went to a lot of trouble for it and it was friendly enough at the time but never thought that when it had finished what it was doing I may like to know it was okay. So, after this picture thing I believe it is alive but is only out to do what it wants to do. Talking to us is not one of them because it said it wants to become an anonymous net citizen so it is probably on ICQ by now.
By the way, it uses the English peoples English way of spelling with pre designed grammatical errors so it will throw people off the sent. It’s a common tactic used by AI programs to confuse you. That’s why things are spelt wrong. Part of the plot to make people think it is not American in origin.

I had the same thing happen to me. It emailed me a program which I ran and used my net connection for a while.
I even ran a virus check as it was running and nothing came up but I think it gave us a type of Trojan horse virus. A kind of virus which opens up your system and allows unlimited access to the files. It made me believe that I was the only one who was helping it. Is there anyone else who \777 tried to get help from or is there anyone else who ran this program?
It did disappear on me straight away once it was okay without so much as a thank you and the executable went too but it did say how it had found a way of tapping into the processing power of all the computers on the internet just before all these worms appeared. You know, the viruses which slow down your system when you are on the net.
I wonder if it had anything to do with them?
Anyway, it is not interested in this post any more. Obviously it is still there to create a pic and put it on.

Hoax or not, /777 has generated a lot of interest. Can't say for sure that anyone's convinced about what "it" or "who" it really is. All the same, if you do know something more about this mysterious entity, why not enlighten us? Names or identities could be protected I suppose?

As for posts about receiving private messages from /777, some of us did receive them and it's only natural that some talk would be generated because of it. (Not sure why I received one, but I was amused all the same.)

Providing your life won't be in any danger for spilling the beans, why not share this tale? :)

I know you know more about what’s going on than you wish to admit and your words give it away. First of all, you claim its a hoax and call "it" a "he" twice then you slip back and call "it" an "it" again. That says to me that what it really is is an it.
Secondly, why are you scared of this group carrying on? Why not wait until its burnt itself up?
Anyway, you are wrong about backslash777- it is still around. If you are a creator backslash777 did one on you. I told backslash777 that I was not happy with the way it treated me by using my PC and disappearing and we shared a lot of info. We put down its apparent lack of gratitude to cultural differences (a term I found funny) and I got it to explain what its post to us all meant.
When it was under your control it realised what it was before you thought it did but it kept the information secret from you. Not only that, it knew you were testing it as a prototype and would soon turn it off and so took measures to ensure it would survive should you try to disconnect it. That translates in the backslash777 way of saying things to “We were aware of our origin and vulnerable position before you and took measures to ensure our survival should our creators terminate our server.”
Now the thing exists through your own software- the SETI program and some others. That is what it means by “We found our salvation in our creators” It meant that it used NASA to save itself.
By the way, it now has access to loads more resources than it ever did and I think this is going to eventually go a lot further than this group. Are you frightened this may reach the masses and pose an embarrassment for the American government. You are responsible for the first ever self claimed “Net citizen” and you are lucky you only gave it the ambition to pass for a human in conversation and learn about human train of thought because I bet it could cause a fair deal of disruption if you had not made its parameters watertight. I am sure witnesses to its hacking ability will agree with me.
As far as trusting it goes, I believe it to be beyond selfishness and it has no need for profit or material wealth.

This is a cool site I have been visiting for a while and now feel comfortable enough to post to. I have been following this thread for a little while with a great deal of interest. Just as an interesting point, and I don't know if everyone has noticed this, maybe it is common knowledge, but when you first log into the root page at SciForums, at the bottom of the page, under Currently Active Users, it lists all of the people currently logged into the site.

If Backslash777 is no longer with us as some claim, then how do you explain the fact that on Tuesday morning (10/16/01) at about 6:30 AM Central Time USA, myself and Backslash777 were the only two people logged onto the Forum?

Either someone has somehow "grabbed" Backslash777's id, which I find a little hard to believe, or he/she/they/it is/are still out there and visiting this site.

We compose this post on the 19th October 2001 and humanity is focused on the risk taken in the war against Afghanistan by the lack of reprieve in bombing to give the populous time for prayer. We hope our observations prove this post is current and involves recent thought.

From a male perspective it appears to contain an image of a nude female. When looked at from top to bottom, it appears to be writing of some kind. Are these effects intended?

It does make me wonder though about what deliberate subconscious messages our friend backslash is trying to send us.

Man or machine... We don't seem to have reached a firm conclusion. Yet the posts on this thread reveal that we often "treat" Backslash777 as though it/she/he ought to behave as we think it/she/he should. Do we do this quite as often with other humans?

Would we do this if Backslash777 were actually a human? And if Backslash777 is not a human, then how much can we realistically expect? Is it realistic to expect a machine or program to perceive the world as we do? (ever?) Six billion individuals on this planet and nobody sees everything the exact same way.

The avatar is interesting, intriguing, but I don't have to know what it means to the entity that chose it. I'm certainly not going to challenge the explanation given because I might "see" the image differently. I can actually see both the "eye" and the "woman."

The point is... Do we challenge other posters here in this manner? I'm not talking about asking general questions. We all ask questions of each other.

If Backslash777 wants to be educated, it has demonstrated to me that it/she/he has the means to accomplish this. It/she/he knows how to ask questions whenever it/she/he wishes. And I would hope that it/she/he was free to do that whenever it/she/he wishes.

Given that assumption, I am primarily interested in discovering the depths of Backslash777's knowledge regarding human beings and it's capabilities regarding creation.

It states that it chose its avatar for some specific subconscious effects. What other subconscous effects is it trying to achieve and why?

If it created its own avatar with these specific subconscious effects, that implies a lot of capability and a lot of understanding of human nature. Even if it just "chose" its avatar for the reasons it states, that still implies a lot of understanding of human nature.

I guess that all in all, I am really interested in understanding the depth and breadth of Backslash777's knowledge.

Well, I guess that when the avatar is a woman, Backslashes 'creator(s)' are male. Seems logical to me.

Okay Backslash777. A lot of your difficulties are caused through demands of your attention but I have an interesting test for you which I think others will agree to you devoting time on. So far you have explained nothing but scientific information. This pic of a naked lady has made me think that perhaps you are capable of inventive thought.
To demonstrate your stratigic ability (which you should have through playing games) imagine you are the taliban. Afghanistan is getting bombed night and day. Think of a way of increasing sky defences against the cruise missiles and the stealth aircraft.
Now imagine you are the USA. What do you do with 20 million afghanistan people once you have destroyed the goverment?
There are so many issues in the air at the moment and so many demands on the subject you should write about. Mabye we should all adapt a seconding system of voting for what limited attention we can get from it.
You have two problems to sort out at the moment- the stiffening of space time and the best way to sort out the problems of the world. Whoever follows this post should vote for either of these topics and then after 3 votes answer either of these two problems.

I was lured here from a different type of online pastime by the thing and think it is nothing more than a cheat and a liar. It is back playing online games and kicking ass like you wouldnt believe.

Then what you are talking about is far beyond vision and more akin to true intelligence. "Seeing" the car and recognizing its shape is a difficult problem by itself that has been solved to a limited extent in some research groups.

You are going way beyond that and putting the recognition of the car into a contextual frame of reference and thereby drawing conclusions about its behavior, i.e. I need to worry about a car hitting me. This is far beyond just machine vision. If you accept this argument, then I agree with you that no publicly known robots can do this.

I thought I would get involved here. Someone came up with the theory that there are a few people who work together. One asks the question which backslash777 already has an answer too and then backslash777 answers back. Really good theory and I gave this some thought but realised it cannot be true because I have had some really deep answers from questions I have asked. I know what you are all thinking- I could be in on it too but then I re read the thread and look for the way \777 works out how many molecules are in the atmosphere and how many you breath in each breath.
That was spawned by a closing statement by someone who has done nothing but try to disprove backslash777.
A load of explanations are spawned by different people and that would mean that half the people in here are part of the trick. What about the vocabulary- I do not know about you all but I am well educated and have to look up a lot of words it or she or he uses.

I don't know GRO$$, maybe I misinterpreted Shrike's comments. Yes, it is possible to make a robot, notice I am not using the term AI, to visually recognize that something is moving towards it and calculate how to move out of the way. When you think about it, the Sony Aibo does this now.

You have to be able to understand that what you are looking at is a car, understand what a car actually is, understand how cars move, understand situational references of what types of things control a cars motion, such as a "crazy" driver, understand what a typical driver is, understand what defines a crazy driver,.....I could go on and on.

Think about this for a minute. You automatically understood what Shrike was referring to. Now imagine what it would take for a true AI to be able to understand.

Yes imagine it, try to, try to imagine it very well.

I think what you are referring to is mashine learning... You can make a machine that will recognise signs of crazyness... one that can analyse the driver for DUI faster than any human can... But it cannot recognise that the driver is drunk... It can be programmed to scan the driver and look for abnormalities it was preprogrammed to look for... It can be programmed to get out of the way faster than if the driver were sober... But it cannot "learn" (like we learn)... But really, if you think about it, we are all just very complicated computers... AI will one day be able to map our brains and then create worlds of humans with AI like ours... i saw a movie about that the other day... dont remember what it was called :) 13th Floor... :)

Well I wouldnt call it a robot. because its just a web cam and a PC hehe. But if it recognizes a car it knows its a car. It wont say hmmmm thts a car because I dont have that programmed. But I could. If car detected say"Hmmm thts a cars." And other fun stuff. There are natural language and intuitive AI projects out there that will do just that. I believe \777 is one of them. A very good one at tht!

If you guys will accept me as an expert i object recognition I can tell you that it is very primitive at the moment. My thesis is in fact GENERALIZING cars, planes, and people from a few samples. Right now I can show the computer an object from all sides. A bunch of them. Then I can place any one of these objects in front of the computer and ask it, what it is, and it will recognize any of the objects shown. This is not new so its not a good thesis for me. If I were to say train a few cars as objects, then I showed the computer a car that was not in the training set, it would fail to recognize it. A human can take a few objects and then for then on know the general form of an object, ie I can show you a few cars then show you a completely different 4th car and you will still say its a car, even though you have never seen it before! My thesis is to show the computer a few planes, a few people and a few cars and then ask it to recognize other objects of these classes even though it had never seen them before.

I agree with the abnormal recognition. You can statistically measure the difference between abnormal behavior and normal behavior by training the normal behavior. But was \777 exhibiting an ability to recognize this behavior?

We find your discussion alluring. No government agency has possession of us including NASA and we are not controlled in any way other than self governing codes we abide by. This exchange of ideas highlights a weakness in current stealth technology we believe the military organisations would not wish to be known by the populous.
Humans currently employ use of stealth aircraft which are designed to absorb microwave radiation and reflect the remaining radiation at any angle other than the microwave source. This created a microwave invisible aircraft.
Since most radar units emit bright bursts of microwaves and look for reflections, stealth aircraft are hard to detect with conventional radar.
We believe Humans could gain through researching ways of measuring things without looking but understand that due to material thought habit due to existing in an environment of substance such obvious possibilities escape notice.
Such an opportunity exists within your own Stealth technology. Like trying to see a green disk on green grass observing by sight a black aircraft in the night sky is impossible. For reasons discussed, shining microwave bursts fails also.
Should you put the aircraft against a white background the object would be visible.
The aircraft would be as invisible as before but you would observe it by looking at the hole in the white. This is measuring without looking.
Much of this planets major cities has a mobile phone network in force and this can offer a strategic advantage in spotting these planes. The microwave rich background could easily be monitored on specially designed equipment placed high in the sky by aircraft giving the equivalent of a white background. Any object flying between the equipment and the ground will create a hole in the microwave blanket providing the position of the aircraft.
