It's pretty funny backwater, backwards Iran "feels" any relation to the ancient and enlightened superpower the Persian empire was. Genji, this movie was BASED on a comic adaptation of the story. They get very few details correct. It is still a great movie. Anything that raises interest in the past is good for movies imho. See what happens is all kinds of people start talking about the movie and then you get to tell them some of the facts(as best we know them). It's an opportunity to educate the plebs. One line they missed in this movie(I mean it's golden, can't believe it was omitted): Gorgo: "What shall I do after you depart?" Leonidas: "Marry a good man and have good children."
Just watched the trailer...looks very boring frankly. Theres lots and lots of bared teeth...and shouting. It does look like something halfway between real life and a cartoon - backgrounds look like a painted canvas. Apparently Harrison Ford threatened to quit the new Indiana film unless he was allowed to use a real whip, instead of a digital whip they had planned this time around...and its easy to see why.
i saw the movie last week friday, it was a great experience watching it. i can't wait to watch it again, it's already in my top five favorite movies of all time, taking gladiator out of the number 5 slot Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! who else finds this movie much more fun and entertaining than gladiator? gladiator was much more emotional but 300 has much better action war scenes and call me crazy, a better storyline....? 300 is also a much more intelligent film than some people give it credit for, and the funny exaggerations, such as the wintaur animal playing the harp (LOL) for the persian court, is all about showing the animal like impulses that engulfed the persian court (the scene could represent any court of that time though). the animal like impulses include the orgies and human worship that was rampant of the time. 300 is a MUST SEE!
I thought it was a pretty cool movie Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! hehe. Expect something with lots of special effects and some really cool fight sequences. Its much more entertaining than Gladiator.
I have lowered my expectations now that I know it's not based on real history and is aimed at 16 year olds but I will see it.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who found 300 better than gladiator Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! as for genji's last post, i personally think it is a bit unfair to call it a movie just for 16 year olds. there are several intelligent scenes in the movie as well as educational. for example, many people won't know until watching the movie how many spartans at the time were thrown into the wild at the age of seven years old in order to discipline the mind and body into being tougher than the average boy/man. it explains a lot as to why and how the spartans were able to be so disciplined while fighting the incredibly huge persian army. similiar things were done with the macedonians, who with alexander the great (and is father as well), were able to utterly destroy armies with a military that was usually much smaller than the armies it defeated. the exaggerations may take away from the historical value of the movie, but the metaphors will help the average lemming understand the nature of the time period. in the long run, no movie is ever 100% accurate, but if the basic idea of the movie is accurate, than i am satisfied.
If you like braveheart you will like this movie I think. The movie is based on a graphic novel so has to go "out there", but that just makes it cool Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I thought the basic idea of the movie was fine, they got the factual details I noticed right, the rest was good entertainment.

The movie was great... and completely inaccurate (nothing wrong with that-- they never claimed to be telling a true story). Hmm... it was the Spartans who were "boy lovers"; it was the Persians who were, by and large, the free and enlightened ones; they neglected the part about how the Athenian navy were the ones who really saved the day. But, who needs facts when you are writing a great work of fiction. ~String
Iran can go suck it. The Persian army consisted of largely unskilled, conscripted warriors that fought using fanaticism and strength in numbers. In that respect, the movie was quite accurate. Most Persians couldn't stand a chance against a Spartan, even two or three to one. They were badass. To the above, yes, Sparta had very little to do with Salamis. The movie used real quotes from ancient Spartans, which I found enjoyable, but though it was exaggerated to an extent it was not "completely inaccurate". Spartans were "boy-lovers", but Athenians moreso, as they found the young male body to be the ideal form and there were specific words for the older and younger males in these relationships. For Spartans, the genders were largely separated and husbands and wives rarely saw each other. Thus, out of practicality and to strengthen bonds in the troops, they did engage in homosexual encounters. In fact, upon having sex with their wives for the first time, it's been said that the woman had to go "doggy style", for lack of a more elegant description. Despite the discrepencies, it still tells the story, albeit Hollywood-style. It's one of my favorite movies, I'll admit - and I saw it in Imax, the best you'll ever get. I can't cite my facts, other than the fact that I've had two years' of classes on this, as well as research from major projects and out of interest. =)
This movie completely sucked. It was the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. I just saw it, going in completely looking for battle scenes and no story, and the battle scenes sucked. Sucked sucked sucked sucked sucked. Sucked. Sucked. ****ing sucked. I think it gave me eye cancer. 90% of the time the Spartans killed everyone on the first chop. I don't know if you could say there was any real fighting in the movie. There were people dying, sure, but to call it a fight shouldn't the other guy be fighting back? There was nothing but death blows. Why don't they make a fucking movie about shooting a fish in a barrel, that'd be just as fun. For a battle oriented movie, why did they made good use of a narrators to allow them to skip over points. Like the battle with the elephants. You see the elephants. Narrator: "Xerxes unleashed his beasts from half way across the world." You see the giant elephants getting pushed back by the Spartans. "They were clumsy beasts" (Brilliant script, what dialogue.. "clumsy beasts" grrrr). You see elephants get pushed over a cliff by men. (WHAT THE FUCK?!) So 3 short sentences of oration over 10 seconds of visual without anything making sense or being interesting counts as like a day of battle or something. This movie was god damn fraudulent. To be honest, he didn't increase my viewing pleasure. What about you?

But a stab in the thigh would be enough to take the average farmer out of commission. "You see the elephants. Narrator: "Xerxes unleashed his beasts from half way across the world." You see elephants get pushed over a cliff by men." If the elephants were easily spooked (as they may well have been after a long journey) then they could have been frightened backwards. Given all the extra weight they were carrying, they would not be as agile or sure-footed as normal either. "And someone please explain what Mr. Hunchback added to the movie. To be honest, he didn't increase my viewing pleasure. What about you?" "Mr. Hunchback" is the representation of the Greek traitor that gave the location of a small pass leading to the back of the Greek army to the Persians. His details are obviously fictional, meant to tell a story - to get us repulsed and sympathetic at the same time. He's obviously more memorable that some random dude, you must admit, and that helps you think more about his moral situation. That reminds me of another fine point - at the end, Leonidas tells the hunchback that he "hopes you live forever". Some people might be either completely confused, or take it as Leonidas wants him to live forever with the guilt riding him. WRONG. To live forever was the greatest dishonour in Greek terms, ESPECIALLY in Spartan terms. Their ultimate goal was to die the death of a warrior - in battle, fighting to their last breath, as the 300 remaining at Thermopylae did as a whole. Leonidas gave the hunchback the greatest insult he could, wishing upon him the most dishonorable, shameful and distasteful life imaginable: a long and quiet one with no end considered worthy of a Spartan.
