One of the things that I find interesting in this thread is the number of people who seem to think they know a lot about carrying weapons, yet don't seem to grasp the idea that those damned guns weight a lot!! And carrying them on ones hip or underarm all day long, every day is not something that makes one happy!

The lightest, smallest weapon that will do the intended job is the best. Believe that from one who has carried a weapon enough to know how heavy one lousy pound is ....all day, every day! And if you don't believe it, wear a 1# weight around for a while ...you'll quickly grasp the problem of weight.

I carry a Smith and Wesson Model 1006 10mm. It's an awesome gun to say the least. Very little recoil with a big punch.

I've no need to carry it with me daily, Baron Max, just for hiking in particular areas.
And then I'm already carrying so much with me, that a kg more won't make a difference.

Imo that Beretta is very nice. .40 ammunition, 11 rounds and said to be quite accurate.

Good choice, Avatar. An excellent weapon and caliber. I personally prefer single action semi-autos, variants of the Colt 1911, because of increased accuracy due to lighter trigger pulls, but I realize double actions are the most popular now. .40 caliber, .45 caliber, or 10mm is best in a semi-auto and the .357 magnum is very good for a revolver.

Too light of a gun is difficult to control with the heavier calibers, even if they are easier to carry in a shoulder holster. You won't notice too much difference with a good belt holster rig. A large pocket on a heavy parka can be used fairly comfortably, but the pistol will be uncomfortable carried in a lighter jacket or coat for any length of time. Just make sure the pocket is clean and free of lint if it is used.

You probably know this already, but the main reason for any misfeed with a quality semi-auto is unsuitable ammo for the particular weapon, or shooting it with a limp wrist. The slide of a pistol will not function correctly if you allow your wrist to flex a great deal when it is fired. Keep a firm grip and a stiff wrist, use a bullet nose shape and load your gun likes, and they are virtually jam free. Buy more than one type of ammo to see which works best in your pistol when target shooting. There can be great differences in accuracy and smooth functioning with different cartridiges. Just common sense advice from an experienced shooter.

yeah i have never even seen one of those guns in person, but from what i have read they are high quality.

that other gun has an M203 launcher attatched, i think it is usualy fitted onto an M16 for military use. but my knowledge on assault rifles and machine guns is limited.

    peace.

WOW! From asking about a handgun to now killing everyone with automatic weapons, wev'e come a long way from what this post was originally about haven't we? People seem to get carried away when guns are being discussed, or at least it seems that way in this post. :truce:

hardly, the usual sciforums thread can start off talking about frogs in the amazon rainforest, ending up in a debate about the creation of the universe or the roman empire.

this topic has just moved from talking about handguns, to a few references to automatic military weapons. not that much of a difference. atleast we are still talking about guns.

    peace.

No, that's what happened the first time with alcohol prohibition. In those days, before FDR started using the Constitution for toilet paper, the government respected the Law of the Land. The people had to enact a constitutional amendment granting the government the power to tell them what they can do with their own bodies. It was a dismal experiment which caused more evil than it prevented and the people overturned it, with conservative, religious, teetotalling Utah casting the deciding vote. Since that day, the government has not had the legal right to be our nannies. They have been manipulating the voters with propaganda, such as the blatant falsehoods in the D.A.R.E. lectures and the "this is your brain on drugs" commercials.

Laws regulating individual behavior are not democracy, they are majoritarianism, the tyranny of the majority over the minority. Consenting adults must be free to do anything they want, especially in the privacy of our homes, so long as it causes no direct harm to others.
You betcha. I'm both a libertarian and a Libertarian, and the Second Amendment is one of our causes celebres. Guns give me the creeps but I'm comforted by knowing that plenty of my neighbors have them. It gives the cops and the National Guard reason to not start midinght house-to-house searches for trans-fatty acids or gay people with wedding rings. The purpose of the right to bear arms is not to protect us from foreign armies, but from our own too-big-for-its-britches government.
"So long as they cause no direct harm to others." That means they must be created digitally so that no actual children are employed, and they must be marketed in such a way that no child can access them accidentally or deliberately. Since this is not the state of the art in internet child porn it should be outlawed. And of course it is already and it illustrates the toothlessness of such reasonable and well-intentioned laws. It's impossible with today's technology--and without a despotic government like China's--to block this content from other countries where officials can be bribed to not enact or enforce their own laws. If you're going to insist that child porn causes "indirect harm," you're exactly the kind of well-meaning American with a naive faith in the Nanny State that the Libertarian Party wants to protect me from. Today it's those nasty child porn websites that are corrupting America with their indirect harm (assuming for the SoA that they are made digitally and easily blocked), tomorrow it will be those nasty atheist websites. I suspect that if you took a poll of the Religious Redneck Retards who have temporary control over this country, more of them would like to persecute atheists than pedophiles.
All of them, so long as they are used by consenting adults and cause no direct harm to others. It is not the purpose of government to legislate morality, and when they try it is invariably a quixotic effort anyway.

The FAL is a sweet weapon. Should I ever get financially fortunate enough to have a big gun collection, the FAL will be part of it.

After looking at the pic you posted, and some pics on the web of the Steyr Aug, I'm pretty sure it is the Aug. Very nice weapon. I'd love to have one in my collection one day as well as the FAL. Here's a pic of it w/o the 203 attached to it.

If I wasn't limited to three images per post, I woundn't have created this additional post.
    So anyway...
However, as far as 'substitues' as someone mentioned earlier goes, if you want to realy accept no substitutes, the SOCOM M14 is your candidate.

M14s have the knockdown power and reliability of an AK, except the M14s are accurate.

Back on topic, Av, I think know what pistol you are looking for, given your circumstances, and you have been presented with some good options. I think it's up to you now. It sounds like you are more or less set on the Beretta .40 cal. I don't think you can go wrong there. May you choose the right pistol, regardless.

Have you ever used pepper spray? That shit hurts. Hurts the user. In confinement, or if the breeze is blowing the wrong way.

Guns give you a lot of confidence, and everyone knows what a gun is. Avatar could simply flash his piece and demonstrate that he has the bigger dick will fuck their shit up!

Baron Max makes a valid point, handguns can be heavy. However, as 2inquisitive mentioned, this is mitigated by a well designed holster and a sturdy belt. The nylon holsters so popular these days are abominations; they lack structural integrity and the stiffness needed to remain in place - and they cost way more than sensible.

A good leather holster - and spend some money, no point in putting a $500 pistol in a $9.95 holster - and a 1.5 inch gun belt (not cheap belt) will do a good job of making that Cougar fade into your body, both in terms of weight and shape.

Wolves don't attack people. Hollywood lies about that to make movies. A wolf will follow a human out of curiosity. They will only attack a human if they are threatened and cornered. I read that in "How to stay alive in the woods" by Bradford Angier; he said he slept many times in the woods with wolves all over the place. Also, any member of the K-9 family can be stared down, by standing still and staring in their eyes. They won't attack. Even a trained attack dog or a pit bull won't. I tried this several times and it works.
The human psyche is stronger than a dog's and it psyches them out.
I have seen a guy on TV that would hunt large hogs with a .22 single shot rifle. If you hit them in the head it will stop them. That small gun you want should work against a wild boar, but you must hit it square in the head. Any other place and that hog will still keep coming.

A few years ago in a winter in Latvia a pack of wolves set out on a remote farm and emptied its sheep stock in three days, made a hole right in the barn. If the wolf is hungry enough or suffers from madness then it may attack.

I know that a boar has to be hit straight and close or right in the ear with such a small gun, my grandad was a hunter, but I have to compromise on size.
Oh, I've done it two times or so and it worked. And sometimes it doesn't. Depends on the situation.

A dog responds to movement. If there is no movement, and you stare in his eyes, he won't attack. He may growl and bark but won't attack. I got that from a dog psychologist that I saw on the old Johnny Carson show in the 1970s. He said it works for any dog.

if you smack the shit out of the alpha male of a wolf pack, you can take control of the other wolves and use them as your minions.

    peace.

This was documented in the book Never Cry Wolf about 35 years ago, by a man who went to study a wolf pack in the Arctic. It was turned into a rather nice movie starring Charles Martin Smith, that portrayed the wolves (and the humans) very accurately. It's probably in the video stores, check it out.
No need to get metaphysical on us.

Humans simply display body language and other behavior that wolves/dogs (DNA tells us they're a single species) instinctively interpret as alpha. Presumably this is the reason those first wolves chose to join a human pack and become dogs, in China around 15,000 years ago.
Wolf packs are fiercely territorial. It's one thing to camp out on their turf. But if you start attacking and they see you as an interloper they might all rise to the defense of the pack and smack the shit out of you first. Even if you succeed, you will have to endure and survive the ritual challenges of the next-in-line alphas. We raise Lhasa Apsos, which have a high incidence of alpha traits because they were bred to be autonomous temple watchdogs. These little suckers are always challenging us for dominance.
