    Here, grab it:

    [deleted]

The problem mostly was that your entire post had to be scrolled horizontally—which is too tiresome.

    I'll delete it afterwards.

Considering who all this is coming from, this is hilarious.

Those who wish to pretend to be arbiters of scientific truth might want to take a hard look at their own behavior. Spurious just detonated under the internally generated pressure of his own incompetence.

Even better would be no commentary at all. Just an automated message with a link to the offending post...without the grave condescending sermonizing.

Keep it simple, uncluttered and straight to the point.

^ Looks like he's not going to edit his post. Anyway, I doubt many will bother reading and scrolling, reading and scrolling, reading and scrolling.

I was just wishing to be helpful. But you have a nasty way of screwing your eyes at me.

Absolutely. It's that 'personal' touch that I and many others find so infuriating: regular condescending sermons, as you rightly say, but a fair amount of fire and brimstone - real, unnerving black anger - too, as the angry deity watches his creations make a mockery of Free Will. Throw in some fairly snide insults and add what for me is by far the most annoying part: unwarranted amateur-psychological assumptions about a person's 'character' and incredibly wide-of-the-mark assessments of previous events, complete with factual inaccuracies and highly dubious assumptions about a poster's 'motives' in playing whatever part they've played. Everyone is in a 'little gang', according to James, except him. He really does think of us as children, it seems to me. Personally, I try never to disappoint him in this regard.

The thing is: nobody is forcing you to read my posts.

Think about it. Then go outside and play in the yard or something.

Maybe all you see is the load of idiots, because all you're interested in is the load of idiots.

Thankyou for your concern for my wellbeing.

How old do you think you are?

    Ironic, isn't it?

If you act like a child, what do you expect?

I have nothing wrong with JamesR. Granted, the infraction was a bit harsh, but i've come to accept that this place can send a person overboard, given the right conditions and troll. Mine is invert nexus.

Yes, I also noticed that. What is that all about actually

This place is a bit boring without monkeyman, but all infractions will be expired
in few hours and the ban will be lifted anyway. Fair enough, imo.

This place is also boring without trolls/trolling. We could not be serious all
time, where is the fun in it?? But if people troll too much, it doesnt look like
science forum. There should be a balance somewhere, and I guess so far
it is already somewhere around balance.

A forum without a moderator is like a car without brake. James R imo is a
    professional moderator

And, of course, the same applies to you.

You've caught me in a rare sensible mood, so let me just say this.

I've long admired the clarity of your thinking on many matters but I've recently lost a good deal of respect for you as a moderator. It gives me no pleasure to say that, and I truly hope that the loss isn't irreversible.

But it seems to me that you currently fail in your role as chief moderator in a number of ways. You're too personal in your comments to those who you feel have crossed you. You're too quick to show your annoyance. You jump to unsupportable conclusions about the character and motives of people who you, in fact, know very little about. You're too rigid and inflexible. You're often downright rude and lacking in civility. I trust that it's not an accurate reflection of your true self but you do come across online as a very smug, pompous individual who believes himself to be absolutely flawless and imbued with an almost divine authority. Is this accidental, or is it how you wish to be seen? It's something that people like me - I love pricking pompous asses - can't help making fun of.

Frankly I expect better of someone who sets themselves up as an archetype of good manners and impeccable behaviour and I know I'm not the only one in that respect. You so often resort to patronising your fellow members, indulging in character assassination and attempting to make them feel small. This is either, as spuriousmonkey suggests, deliberately provocative behaviour or it is a major, major misjudgement on your part. You gain nothing from treating your fellow members in this way, except perhaps a reinforced sense of your own superiority, and at the same time you lose a hell of a lot in terms of the respect that members have for you and, as a result, in terms of your ability to control their behaviour.

When you next deal with transgressors consider reining in the personal remarks and the moralising slightly. Consider adopting a cooler, more distant, more professional, less personal approach. Consider even simply asking posters politely to refrain from whatever it is they're doing before taking any further action. You could learn a lot from our administrator Plazma Inferno in terms of finding a balance between authority and humanity. Study how he deals with transgressors and try to learn from him.

If people see you working hard on being wise and fair, as a chief moderator should be, maybe they'll then adjust their behaviour accordingly.

P.S. You really should drop the infraction system with immediate effect. I hope you don't, as I personally find them hilarious, but it does serve no purpose other than amusing some and infuriating others. My personal view is that polite requests for compliance followed by a ban if the requests aren't heeded are all that's necessary, without any additional window-dressing.

    Best wishes,

    redarmy11.

Good post, red. I agree on dropping the infraction system.

    If I could, I would:

    - Demote all of the mods, and then have the community elect several supermods to administrate all forums.

    - Encourage discourse in the SF Open Government forum.

    - Make a policy of only banning for very severe offenses (threats, defamation, spamming advertisements, child pornography, etc.).

    - Unban several long standing members who were excellent contributors, if controversial (spookz, Lou Natic and Satyr), although whether they would come back is highly doubtful.

    - Create an adults only forum for the "Most Beautiful Woman/Man" threads, so that posters can finally fulfill their desire to post nudes.

I know that I'll never have the chance to do any of the above. But I just posted that to combat any claims that "I'm just complaining without offering any solutions."

Unlike facts, inzomnia, opinions are never 'wrong'. So no need to apologise - you're as entitled to yours as anyone else.
