A strange eyeball condition...

I have a friend who's pupil, of only one of his eye balls, makes a perfect square shape (90 degree angles) when there is full light in the area. His focus for daylight creates a curious looking pupil, what sort of things could cause this? I've never seen or heard of such a condition before, perhaps it is just a birth defect? How/why would human genes decide to create a pupil with 90 degree angles when focused? I had the idea that the human body is a rounded device, with curves and no sharp angles like this anywhere. Truly a funny anomaly.

No, in dimmer light the shape goes to a normal circle, and he doesn't wear contacts

Upon Googling, I could only find this:
"A square-shaped pupil was achieved with iris-retractor hooks, and the mean size of the largest circle that can fit in this square was 5.6+/-0.6 mm."

But I don't think he has iris retractor hooks inside his eye....

Another piece in googling I found was this:

"....would form pupil 20 into a roughly square shape...."

But that is for a patent concerning eye implants.... hmm, who knows?

I've asked him twice in the several years I've known him, and I never get a response.

Is this guy fairly old? Because it sounds like he has an iris fixated IOL (intraocular lens). These were popular about 20 years ago as part of cataract surgery and may still be used occasionally. I think they are also used sometimes to correct high refractive errors.

As you can see in the picture, the IOL has four anchor points. In bright light, the pupil shrinks and bumps against them which forces it into a square shape. In dark light the pupil expands and so assumes its natural round shape.

wonder if there's such a condition where the pupil is slitted, like an alligator's? friend of mine wore contact lenses that were red and slitted like that for halloween, freaky...

Well, an Iris Coloboma is pretty close:

It's a congenital malformation of the iris. Also, the little girl pictured in the lower picture is Madeline McCann. She's the girl who was reported missing while she and her parents were vacationing in Portugal. They put out this picture showing the coloboma to help identify the girl.

When we went to get my son glasses, we found out he has one iris that won't open all the way. Well, I don't know if one is smaller than the other, I just thought it got stuck and wouldn't open all the way. Is that a condition?

Well, your pupil can become paralyzed a number of ways. Is it actually completely immobile, or is one just smaller than the other (anisocoria)?

I'd guess that one pupil is simply smaller than the other, which is usually just a congenital defect (physiologic anisocoria, no big deal). But there are many other potential causes of anisocoria, such as Horner's syndrome.

You'll note the difference in pupil size, eye color, and a slight droop to the right eyelid. He would also have an inability to sweat on the side of his face with the small pupil.

You should call or visit the doctor again to clarify what he thinks is the cause and to confirm that he believes no further testing is needed. Most likely he suspects simple or physiologic anisocoria.

Here's a pretty good article on different pupil sizes: http://www.nanosweb.org/patient_info/brochures/anisocoria.asp

Yeah, it is. I've only seen one or two of these since nowadays we put the implant (intraocular lens or IOL) behind the pupil which works a lot better. Here's an image of a posterior chamber IOL (an IOL designed to go behind the iris):

And here's a model of the eye showing where the lens goes:

With this newer design, the pupils behave normally.

madanthonywayne, you've got some seriously crazy photos going on here... I've not seen stuff like this before. However, the friend of mine is about 20 years old... and when I say his pupil is "square" I'm talking like, you draw a square in the old windows Paint program with exact 90 degree angles. He has a cyborg eyeball implant! (With X-Ray's) AHHHhhhhhh Run away!! hahaha

An anterior chamber iris fixated IOL is the only condition I can think of that would cause the situation you describe. Ask him if he's had cataract surgery.

My eye does the same. Zero drugs or medication of any kind. Always achieved top grades in college as well as perfect scores in military school. Have a good knowledge of science as well as energy. Strong belief in HaShem as well as Torah though know science is a part of basic understanding for creation on a molecular level which includes life force . My mind multitasks though I do one thing I'm fully aware of surroundings yet also work as well as also in deep thought or prayer with HaShem as well. My vision focuses on two -three things material as well as spiritual as well as physical task at hand. a wide angle vision in pupil like viewing a work of art in a painting so the outside view is as bright at forward view. I'd post my eye with pupil if possible. No surgery ever no eye implants or contacts last eye exam scored higher than normal 20/20 human vision. I've experienced HaShem though and no I'm not a Jehovah witness . I'm a Hebrew or what some now term Jew .

Someone close to me had a stroke, and now one of their pupils is misshapen. (Not a full square, but one corner of a square.)

I'd guess that whatever powers the contraction of the iris (whether muscles or nerves) has died in specific locations.

Don't know if that's what happened toyour friend.
