    Some thoughts...

Since all crude oil basically comes from middle east on perhaps a 30 year contract, the input price to refineries should be basically the same in Europe or America. So, the price differential between Europe and USA must be mostly taxes.

Now that the input price has gone up, should not Europeans be paying a lot more in Petrol cost and Food and everything that is made from Oil? Is it catching Europeans yet?

mad did you know there was a strike some years ago by milk truck drivers. The goverment decided that milk was an essential service so the army drove the trucks until the strike was over. I dont know how long ago it was though because it was mum who told me about it.

synthesizer-patel there is a guy in australia who has made a small buiness out of ripping the engins out of normal small cars. He then replaces it with an electric motor and a shit load of massive batteries. The cars get at least 100K per charge and do up to around 140 so they are great city cars and the charge takes only a couple of hours on a 20Amp line.

Thats a great start to helping with alternative fuels. Interesting to know that can be done at aparently a practical price if he made a sucessfull business out of it.

problem is its only one guy and i think he is semiretired and doing this on the side so the buiness needs to grow ALOT. Maybe the goverment could put some money into growing that buiness *shrugs* who knows but i know once i buy a new car the one i have currently is going to have this done and become my city car

Would be an obvious move to create gvnmt grant programs for businesses that are producing, developing alternative fuels and alternative fuel uses.

Im looking at purchasing a hybrid but am hesitant as it still uses petrol, for whatever reason i have this belief just around the corner will be something even better than a hybrid. for now i ride my yamaha to and from work on nice days.

when i can aford it im going to get this done to my car and at the same time have our power converted to 100% wind and solor at that point the only emmisions we will have will be from the natural gas and those can be offset

Awesome I looked into building an "earthship" as my first house but is unfortunately out of my pricing right now.

I am not sold on the man made GW that is being tossed around but regardless efficient energy production/consumption is just smart, economicly and enviornmentaly.

Here in the UK the cheapest petrol ( supermarket stuff ) currently costs the equivalent of $9 a gallon and is set to go on rising. Food prices are rising owing to world shortages and additional cost of delivery.

Interestingly, oil company profits continue to soar. They have a licence to print money. The government is keeping stumm about the fact that as petrol prices rise so does the revenue flowing into its coffers.

I'm all for retrofitting - its often less energy costly than building from scratch - however using fossil fuels to make electricity to charge a battery, to make electricity to run a car is very inefficient, and probably uses more oil than simply driving a 4lt Yute / SUV in the first place.

The solution is to invest in public transportation systems that run off renewable/nuclear power that are cheap, efficient, reliable, frequent, and convenient enough to enable people to have a genuine choice over using their cars, and carbon neutral fuels for personal transport (hydrogen fuels cell perhaps?)

In the other posts, there still seems to be the lingering fallacy that this would have to be done by some bloated government department instead of funneling tax dollars/pounds/euros into the private sector on competitive contracts.

Maybe it's a product of upbringing, but for five years I've continued to marvel at the number of posters on this site that think the federal government is the solution to everything.

I would call them nationalistic liberals, but that's probably not accurate because so many are also part of the "blame America first" crowd, whenever it comes to international situations.

Suffice to say, these are a people for whom I have no explanation or ability to understand.

Once again, I pose the question: Do oil companies not deserve to earn a profit?

Slippery slope fallacy. Government is just collective action. It can be whatever we democratically elect it to be. No corporation "deserves" to make a profit while ignoring the public good. It's not a person.

Sure. And they deserve the full protection and enablement of their government as they do so, like any business dependent on government-arranged markets, treaties, property laws, currency establishment, physical protection, etc.

And then they pay their taxes, abide by the laws, and generally behave responsibly as corporate citizens.
Importance isn't the key. The existence of a market that includes the costs and the benefits is the key.

It's because you can't set up a market in education to balance the costs and benefits that government must supply education or accept the common lack of it. Likewise with "energy" - the long term costs of depleting the world's oil fields while setting up an oil-dependent economy are not covered by the price of gasoline. They are generalized, or socialized if you will, among parties not present in the immediate transactions.

Hmmmmmm. What should we call them? They're leftists, might as well call them socialists. And they're also in favor of big government, you called them nationalistic? I know! How about National Socialists! Or is that already taken?

I already assigned that to its proper heirs, the current administration and future Republican Party spinoff, on another thread in this forum.

    Nobody objected.

Of course you did, and in all seriousness, no doubt. My statement was mostly in jest and just jumped out at me from his "nationalistic liberals" phrase.

Whereas you, in defiance of Godwin's Law, just love to throw around the Nazi/fascist label. Ever hear of this book?

Seems everyone likes to throw around the fascist label, so you're not alone.

Unlike the unconsciously silly Goldberg's, my reasoning is sound. There is such a thing as accuracy, getting it right.

"Liberal fascism". "Groupthink independence". Moronic, with and without the "oxy". He's swallowed his own pitch, sold himself the incredible tomato slicer that does not work.
