Soo.. one of our IT specialists here won a trip to Europe.. more specifically.. Spain and France.

She recently got back, and said Spain was wonderful, but France, and the French attitude really put her off ever moving to that part of the world, as she is under the impression that even xenophobic South Africans are better than the French.

Another friend of mine traveled through Europe. She went to all the WE countries, and her second from last visit (after being in Italy).. was a stop over in France. She informed me that the French actually ruined her whole European tour (She did compliment the Italians a lot)... and had never come across such "siff" people in her life before.

I have French family, and ended up in France.. and I couldnt understand why the French`s attitude sucked so much. I mean.. its not like they have much to be proud of. Their power is lost.. they are a European state now.. they make terrible cars.. and yet they think the world revolves around them? To me they come across as arrogantly stupid. Even though I have french ancestry.. I can honestly understand why my ancestors left that country.

For me.. theyre a bunch of fobs... theyre partly responsible for a lot of corruption going on in my country.. and their resource grabbing in Africa has really made things harder.

I dont know what the heck they have to have such kak attitudes. From a traveler's perspective... Iran is friendlier than France.. and most people I know scratch it off their visit lists.

Its this a common perception out there? Or are they just assholes to people from other continents?

When people ask me my ancestry.. I no longer say Anglo/French.. simply "English South African".

Around here the idea that the French are an arrogant people is surprisingly persistent.
Although I don't want to generalize I have to say that I met some pretty nasty people in France.. I'm sorry to say that there's probably some grain of truth in the accusation.
I'm in The Netherlands by the way.

They are the middle child. Italy has better art and food and is more laid back and Spain could easily replace France so who needs France. That is probably what they figure. As for myself, i never really thought about it.

The French stalwartly and resolutely refuse to become Americanised, and more power to them. They are proud to be French, and are proud of their culture. Ask for directions to a MacDonalds or Starbucks and you might be in for some attitude. Delve into thier food, speak their language, and they are very happy to accomodate.

I sometimes wish England were more like France.

ha ha ha. The England of the 60s-70s is loooong gone. U.S had nothing to do with that.

*Note: thats what i heard on the radio yesterday. I wish it wasnt true, so jsut saying...thats what i heard.

The French have always had a bit of an attitude. When the rest of Europe decided planting a more weather and war restistant crop was a good idea (potato), they decided to stay with grain crops. The result, mass starvation which ultimately led to the French revolution and more bloodshed. The French their empire a long time ago and they have never recovered. To them, they are still the center of the world.

I suppose they are overly proud of their country that is perceived as arrogance. I think they may resemble Americans in their patriotism.
Again, I don't want to generalize. I'm talking about commonly perceived overall behaviors, whether wrongly interpreted or not.

They have a habit of blaming other nations for their own problems too.

Indeed, just look at the French Canadians. They have rules in Quebec that specify public signs must be in French and so much larger than words written in English. They even have the language police to enforce the language laws.

I think they are a failed culture trying desperately to save itself. But without any thing upon which to hang their hat. What culture has language police? Give me a freeking break!

The French always want to do it their way regardless of the merits.

    lol that's horrible..

I want to see if there is a correlation between the most patriotic nations and medicine use.
France and the USA are heavily medicated nations and both are (seemingly) very proud nations.
I wonder if there is a correlation.

I've only been to France once and that was Brittany. Most people were friendly and were very helpful. The only people who seemed to have a bad attitude were the youth of the nation.

I think French arrogance is a product of their insecurity. I mean, what people have police that go out and measure wording on signs to make sure that French words are so much larger than English words. I mean really.

Now this article also includes a warning issued to a lady considering buying a parrot. The problem, the parrot was not multilingual and did not speak French...only English. So owning the parrot would be a violation of their language laws.

Maybe that's true in Canada, because they are bilingual.
They may feel English is taking over.
But I can't apply your argument to France.

I am sorry to have to tell the French, but they need to look around. The English have taken over.

They did rule the world once. It is hard to give up the top position. Just imagine America 100 years from now, although with the arrogantly stupid you don't have to wait that much...

On the bright side, the French was the only WE country that approached the energy problem in a sensible way (we don't have oil or coal, so let's build nuclear reactors!) and today they are pretty much the only one actually selling energy, mostly to Germany and Italy.

It is also possible that they treat Americans particulary nasty. They were the ones who publicly opposed the Iraqi invasion...

This goes way beyond Iraq. The French have been acting more like adversaries than allies since WW I.

    And Germany..
The Netherlands ruled the Western World once.. and the English did as well.

Not to sure if I follow that logic. The single nation to have conquered the most of the world would have being Ye Olde English Empire.

And lets be honest.. Germany kicked their behinds pretty soundly in WW2..

In SA.. theres a joke about buying second hand french tanks. Never used, and 1 gear forward, 5 in reverse.

Though saying that, they did supply some nice jet fighters to the South African Apartheid government

(which in case you are interested.. soundly kicked anything the Russians could put in the air at the time.)
