    Taliban fighters storm US base

    Pussies.

    Bastards.

I don't think Mike is looking at the bigger picture. This was an outrageous attack by the Taliban, 400+ men attacking the Americans in their own base, battling them for several hours and inflicting their biggest loss in 3 years. The Taliban were supposedly toppled back in 2001 yet here we are, 2008 and the Taliban are attacking bases in large numbers.

Something is going terribly wrong for the US...

Why don't we call them what they are, Pakistanis? The problem with the world today is we can't call a spade a spade anymore. Where are these guys based? Where are they getting their supplies, where are they mounting their raids from? Let's just close off the border already and choke the life out of them.

If the sheer length of the border doesn't make it impossible to seal, the topography of the Hindu Kush mountains does.

That really isn't the issue though. This attack happened at a small outpost in Kunar province, which is where the Taliban has been most effective at launching these little incursions since fleeing to the hills in the months after 9/11. The reason for this is because the Pashtun tribes within the province (who consider them neither Afghan or Pakistani, just to indicate how meaningless the national border is to these people) are more sympathetic to the causes of al Qaeda and/or the Taliban than in other border provinces further south like Khost. As such, Kunar is the front line in the fight against the Taliban. A bulk of our forces are concentrated there already - Special Forces, SEALs, Rangers, Marines, and the Army's 10th Mountain division all operate from a couple of big bases right outside the provincial capital of Asadabad as well as being stationed up in the mountains at much smaller outposts such as the one that was attacked here. The duty there is incredibly tough; with an environment and enemies that are far more dangerous than anywhere else in the world. The guys rotating home from Kunar are the most combat-hardened in the entire US military.

The real issue is, in my opinion, keeping the Pashtun tribes on our side of things. Nobody moves through the mountains without them knowing about it. No Taliban come across the border without them allowing it. Every time we can convince a tribal elder to see our side of things it denies the Taliban an in-country foothold, supply base, and deafens their intelligence. Yes, Pakistan could do about a million things to make themselves more useful, and the Taliban knows it is safe in the country outside of Peshawar in the Northwest Frontier province is theirs, but the Taliban need Kunar if they want to make any headway into the rest of the country. We aren't going to let them have it.

It's a good time of year for picking a fight?

Well, there was that prison break a couple weeks ago. Between 350-400 of the Taliban's "most experienced killers" escaped.

It's a month later. I wonder if any of the Sarposa escapees took part in the Kunar assault?

I sure hope you're right. The stories I hear from Canadian soldiers are that the Taliban are dropping like flies any time our boys engage them, so it's not like they stand any chance militarily. But they just keep coming and coming, and the Pakistani tribes keep sending and sending, and it's never going to end until either we go into Pakistan, or start imposing sanctions to force them to act. Meanwhile people are getting fed up here with the whole war and think it's better if we just let Afghanistan go back to the barbaric slavery they used to "enjoy".

As someone who has been living in Canada for 11 years and who understands the people here a bit, I have no freakin clue how anyone in Canada supports the Canadian war effort in Afghanistan. Other than the people in the top government position who see "the big picture", why would Joe Canuck be for any of it?

And re: leaving Afghanistan alone, that would have been the easy and right thing to do -- just let them rot in the pile of their jihadi shit as they so desperately want to -- had there been no repercussions for it outside of Afghanistan.

No kidding otheadp, and me living out east, I'm exposed to extreme magnitudes of western self-hatred, as if it were somehow an enlightened thing to embrace and appease extremists. You identified yourself as being from Israel, didn't you? If so, my condolences to you, a child killer gets released from prison today and half the world embraces him as a hero. Have no mercy on your enemies next time, if they start yet another war it just shows they can't be appeased, anymore than the fascists of old.

The wars will continue until the money runs out. These are sham fights. The origin of the 911 terrorists is a country called Saudi Arabia. They are and have officially been our ally in the region.

I'm surprised they did not give the child killer a medal and 80000 shekels. Isn't that the current going rate for killing Palestinian children? Afghan children of course, no one is counting.

But the one Israeli child, for which the 16 year old who has been in prison for so long, never been tried or allowed to stand due process, that one child is all important.

Perhaps some thought should go into these statements. Just because someone is of a certain nationality and perpetrates crimes does not mean that their government supported them or their actions I dont know for sure but just trying to inject some common sense into the discussion. I feel this is worth mentioning and the information weather passports etc, were stolen so this should be considered also. This is what i know from information made public.

I don't know about automatic stipends for killing Palestinian kids, but I know Saddam used to send a lovely bounty to Palestinians for doing that to jews. Then he got lynched. :bawl:

Nor is anyone counting the number of Pakistanis who come in and kill them.

He also paid a good bounty to Palestinian parents who sent their children to commit suicide bombings, $25,000 U.S.

    How to stop suicide bombers

One sure way to stop the suicide bombers in Israel is to hold the parents responsible for their child's crime.

Today, Palestinian parents willingly and proudly send off their kids to become suicide bombers and commit mass murder inside Israel. In exchange for sacrificing their child, they receive from Saddam Hussein or Saudi Arabia a cash payment of $35,000.

Child suicide bombers in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict ...

A promise of financial payoffs to the families of bombers is another powerful incentive, Ganor says. Jaber confirms that cash payments from Iraq and other Arab countries go to these families, many in desperate need of money, after the suicide-bombing mission. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has offered to pay $25,000 to the family of each Palestinian suicide bomber as an incentive for others to volunteer for martyrdom.

So Saddam was giving money to survivors of suicide bombers. Yeah, what a terrible thing. Like the US, he should be sending cluster bombs and 3 billion a year to allow foreigners to kill natives instead.

Still supporting the Jewish ONLY "right" of "return" on Palestinian land?

Saddam paid no money to the survivors of suicide bombing's, he paid blood money to those who sold their children into suicide.

This is true. By the same tolken, the American soldiers in the middle east should not be blamed on America since they were trained in other countries such as Qatar. The US is really not at fault for them being in the middle east or what they do there.
