Generally, the slower the game the more time people have to compile endless statistics and to invent weird terms for specific things or events.

Cricket is the British Commonwealth version of the US's baseball in that respect. Certainly, cricket is no slower or more boring than baseball. The fans are no less obsessive about the statistics, either. American football (grid iron) is similarly slow and statistic-ridden.

..."holding out against spin", sounds like something certain candidates are doing, in a certain political contest (which shall remain nameless).
But politics isn't cricket, I guess.

I'll give a long, clear explanation of the tactics and appeal of the game but first I need some assurance from someone who is not English/Australian/Indian/Kiwi or suthevriggen that they are remotely interested.

    Please indicate.

If you're just in it for boasting rights ....

Yeah, but you can't really blame them. There are a lot of people who don't see the beauty of a no-hitter. Few have the opportunity, for instance, to appreciate a no hitter in which your team loses. (It's only happened five times in the last 108 years; sixteen years between the last two.)

So when you're used to seeing teams rack up 200-300 runs a game, I can understand how good pitching might bore the hell out of someone. After all, they're not there to watch the game as an art, or science, or anything like that. They just want their favorite team to win so they can feel better about themselves.

And, damn it all, I missed the All-Star Game. Oh, well. I usually don't make a big deal out of it, but this one, apparently, was a spectacle:

    National...000 011 010 000 000 — 3 13 4
    American...000 000 210 000 001 — 4 14 1

Fifteen damn innings. How nice of them to put on a show for Yankee Stadium, eh?

Tiassa, a maiden over ( set of six deliveries from one bowler without score) is very much appreciated in cricket.
A bowler who can restrict run scoring is usually in a patch of good form and is mounting pressure on the batsman.
This is exactly where the mind games come in and the game is elevated from sport to mental science( the bit that sports detractors sadly never, ever get)

    I must be missing something

I must be taking you wrongly. Six throws of the ball without anyone scoring?

How about a hundred deliveries? A hundred twenty?

    Just out of curiosity?

No. It wouldn't happen, not in succession anyway and I can fully appreciate the awe, tension and control displayed in a no hitter.

I just clicked on SAM's link to 'the little master', Sachin Tendulkar, wonderful stuff, brilliant timing, balance, power, technique etc. shame they didn't show some of his impeccable defence also.

Hmmmmm....interesting (though cricket can't always be viewed that way) Most cricketers play baseball in their off season down under where I'm from, but not vice versa. Its hand eye coordination that enahnces their prowess in both sports and keeps them fit for their own sporting season. Sure, most basebalers do get caught as they do go the tonk!, but the most baseballers make pretty good golfers as their swing is more compatible. Tiger Woodbees need not worry though.

    And so on

I must admit that cricket is—obviously—largely a mystery to me. The most I know of it comes from Mark Steel's occasional joke, and his 1999 radio lecture on W. G. Grace. Hardly the best source. I mean, there's that touching scene in Hope & Glory, but it's not worth anything in the context of actual knowledge.

No, we'll get it, no-one else.

Honestly I'm working myself up to a Tiassa-length post about cricket but I'm worried about getting bogged down in the confusing terminology.

Suffice to say for the moment, any hard core fan of baseball if given enough exposure and incentive towards cricket would be a major fan.
By incentive I mean a reason to support a team, I mean the wimbledon women's final I could not watch,, great tennis but I did not care who won. I watched a set, didn't care, turned it off.

My good man, why should there be any great difficulty in distinguishing two games that have teams, one throwing a ball, the other trying to hit it? The principles, even some of the terminology are the same thing. When a pitcher throws the ball over the plate, the batter is obliged to swing; when a bowler throws the ball at the wicket and the batter hits it with his leg instead of his bat, same deal, type of thing: the principle of a "fair strike". Now, let's have another cup of tea, what?

P.S. I had a Punjabi schoolmate at Frankton primary who could bowl a nice googly. His dad played for a local team at Seddon Park (way back).
