We limit ourselves by our level of intelligence. If we had the ability to look at things differently than what laws govern our world (physically and metaphysically) then technological possibilities are endless.

We limit ourselves by what boundaries we have established and are given. That is why some of the greatest minds in the world operate unrestricted.

Aliens could very well operate unrestricted and have the ability to function and operate differently. Much as they probably have different needs in terms of food, shelter, etc.

"Everything that can be invented has been invented."

--Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Office of Patents, 1899.

This just sums up the psychology of some people so nicely...wish I could stick it in my signature.

    Well here's a few others:

    "There's one born every minute."
    --Unknown

"You may fool all the people some of the time,
you can even fool some of the people all of the time,
but you cannot fool all of the people all the time"

    -- Abraham Lincoln, 16th US president, 1861-1865.

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”

    -- Mark Twain

“A wise man changes his mind, a fool never”
    -- Spanish Proverb

“The fool speaks, the wise man listens”
    -- African Proverb

The best way to convince a fool that he is wrong is to let him have his way
    -- Josh Billings, 1818-1885

Indeed the quotes might seem a little off topic, however some of them are pearls of wisdom.

As for Aliens and their social development, you might have some people suggest "Aliens could live in complex hive structures like insects" Darwinism suggests in this instance however that the "drones" do not travel any further than they have to for foraging and therefore would suggest that a species operating this hive mentality wouldn't make it out of their own solar system yet alone to another light years away. The only time that there is any transportation of distance for a hive is when it's young females become queens and leave the initial hive to spawn others, of course this is where the plotline of "Alien" originally came from. (With of course the host destroying parasitic twist)

I'm not saying Aliens out there would be following a lifestyle much similar to our own, however there is still the point that all the physics they "discover" if Identical to our own is going to be attributed to other entities than the ones we attribute.

To add further a little scifi story for you to ponder:

Mankind gets to a point where it realises that time as being abstract as it's known to be is in fact controllable by being the Creators of the universe to begin with. I creation mankind ponders the thought... "Should we be alone within this universe?" this generates a number of ethical problems, mankind could embark on creating other races that are seeded throughout the universe (and thereby learning their points of inception to make it easier to contact them) however mankind decides it should become God's but confined in these creations that they too can be creators. Basically emphasising a method to create a pact between all entities that exist in the universe to eventually come together to create the universe. Mankind loses the Singularity of the birth of the universe to a Co-operative effort of Equality throughout multiple civilisations that span many stars.

If we eventually built the universe alone, think how lonely our little bluegreen life harbouring planet really is in this infinite in concept universe and how every time a person mentions a UFO or a little green man, their concept, reasoning or belief seems foolish.

Ah, OK, you blew your OP when you used the word 'metaphysically'.

    We limit ourselves?
Who set the limits on our imtelligence?

    Any evidence to show that?

Name one "great mind" that has operated without restriction.

Operate unrestricted except for the physical properties of the universe...

    I agree.

    Yep, I agree.

    Take heed, lol.

    Sure.

No one here is just listening...pretty sure everyone here is typing/saying something you silly goose...see two quotes above.
Apparently neither one of us is content to let the other simply converse on this topic without retorting with at least some sarcasm or subtle knocking so...see three quotes above, lol.

Don't get me wrong Stryder, I'm just having fun.

Although you kind of lost me on your final story it's good to see you taking a practical effort in thinking in "posibilities" and I respect that.

I could see a hive mentality in a species where the soul or "emotions" were bred out of them or at least extremely repressed over a multitude of generations..
    Interesting topic.
