We find fractals everywhere in nature. Whether it be the veins in your body, the leaf structure of a fern, or the shell of a sea creature; all fractal patterns.

The way things grow, group and organize themselves are all fractal in nature. Even galaxy distributions on the largest scale we can observe form fractal patterns.

Keeping this in mind, observe the BILLIONS of species of life that have existed on this planet. Should we really expect the universe to be any different? If such a diverse variety of lifeforms can arise on one planet (one part of the fractal) then what else is the universe capable of creating?

I propose life is the norm in the universe, not the exception as we have been led to believe.

Furthermore we are not alone as conscious entities. Just recently Dr. Mitchell an Apollo 14 astronaut came forward and told us our government has been in contact with extraterrestrials for 60 years. This is not just a nut you can brush off, this is the real deal highly trained bonified astronaut with the record for longest moonwalk.

Life is tenacious, it will grow where ever the hell it can and maybe some places it cant. Either way, were not alone.

I agree. I see no reason to conclude that of all the probable billions of planets in the galaxy that the Earth is totally unique and special, that the physics and chemistry that have allowed life on this planet have not also allowed life on countless other planets. I find it stupid to argue otherwise. But what percentage of the galaxy’s life is intelligent, self-aware and technologically advanced life is a separate question and much more debatable, as is whether we would ever be able to communicate with such beings due to the distances involved.

I have always fancied that the majority of sensible and scientifically educated people would think this way. (Am I correct?) Of course, at the moment it’s N=1 so it’s all just pure speculation which ever way you argue.

Okay, this is where you’ve gone off the rails into absurdity. I put it to you that he is a nut that can be brushed off.

    Firstly….

From direct experience I can assure you that just because an individual works for the government or is a member of the armed forces (or both) does not mean that the person has automatic access to, and knowledge of, government and/or military secrets. So even if it were true that the US Government has been in contact with an advanced alien civilization for the past 60 years, simply because Dr. Mitchell was a bona fide astronaut with the record for the longest moonwalk in no way means that we should assume that he would have any actual knowledge of this conspiracy.

    Secondly, and more obviously….

Some people go senile. Some people are attention whores. Some formally “normal” people can suffer from a variety of psychiatric conditions. Remember one Dr. James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, one of the driving forces behind modern genetics and molecular biology, a driving force behind the human genome project, one of the most significant scientists of the 20th century? Basically, he’s gone a bit senile in his later years and has destroyed his own reputation with absurd comments on the genetic inferiority of some races, on how ‘stupidity’ is genetic and can be bred out, and other various nonsense.

Appeals to authority do not make for solid evidence because former astronauts and famous geneticists are, at the end of the day, just people like you and me.

But if you admit life is the norm in the universe, surely you cannot believe we are alone as conscious entities (whether they are here or not)?

And as an astronaut I would say he has more of a say than most on what goes on in space. Keep in mind also HE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE SAYING THIS. Just the most recent.

I think it is very highly unlikely we are alone in the galaxy as conscious entities. All I was saying is that, IMO, to what extent life evolves into conscious intelligent life is more debatable then whether ET life has evolved at all.

Imagine the fascinating forms of life that could exist out there. Too bad the universe is so unimaginably huge. We have seen no evidence of life elsewhere so the sci-fi hopes of galactic governments and such are likely fantasy.

There have been a lot of threads here and at other forums on the subject of life else where in the universe.

Our only evidence for the existence of life is the history of life on our own planet.

That history indicates that life will occur whenever & where ever the conditions are suitable. Early primitive life occurred on Earth almost as soon as it was possbile for it to occur. That history suggests the existence of many planets with life.

That history also strongly supports the notion that intelligent life is a lucky fluke rather than an evolutionary inevitablilty. In the absence of some real evidence indicating otherwise, it is highly likely that we are the only intelligent life in our galaxy and that many galaxies have no intelligent life at all.

The pros & cons of the above point of view have been posted several times in other threads. Try some searches instead of rehashing the discussion.
