Of course "Zap" is a sock puppet, while he doesn't mock the system though (too much at least) he's not a problem.

As for the idea, the simplest of methods would be to just allow one forum for Guests (That's non-members and people that aren't signed in) to post. The problem with this is it would require a CAPTCHA to make sure that it didn't get filled by spambots.

In essence if it was to be done, perhaps it would be best to be written, stylised and followed like a site Science Project. (In this case Psychology).

At least the IP addresses will be logged, I'm sure. Which would be an interesting situation...someone being banned for what they say in the anonymous forum.

I think even more anonymity would be a very bad idea. It basically removes responsibility from them and then they feel entitled to write whatever they want, without having to pay for their actions. After the whole "RT" phenomenon I don't think we should give potential trolls that ability.

JamesR has a point, why be embarrassed by sticking up for your ideals? If they had any merit in the first place then you wouldn't need to hide...

I can understand that people like draqon, who have 20,000 posts of nonsense, have become very attached to their personas online. So, for example, draqon's desire to cause mischief is outweighed by his desire to not get banned. If we take this incentive away, i.e. give absolutely no repercussions for causing mischief, then anarchy would prevail. People like draqon have absolutely no incentive to play by any set of rules (what meager rules DO exist).

So, again, to the proponents of such a forum: what is the advantage of having such a forum? And, is this advantage greater than the barrage of assholery that it will surely entail?

    I'm against the idea.
    The forums are inherently anonymous.
If you don't have the conviction to stand by your ideas, then you shouldn't be espousing them.
If you don't have the evidence or information to support your ideas, then you probably shouldn't be espousing them.

An anonymous forum would simply end up as a cesspool for disenfranchised members to sit around slagging off the moderators of this forum, all the while missing two parts of the simple truth:

    1. Forums are inherently meritrocracies. When you sign on to a forum, you are agreeing to adhere to a certain standard of behaviour, and the interpretations of that standard by those that are deemed to have enough Merit to be given the job of Moderator. In essence, in signing up to, and signing into a forum, freedom of speech becomes essentially meaningless. Sure, you can say what you want, however, only as far as the moderators will tolerate. The same goes for the moderators, if one moderator is seen to be 'off the mark' then complaints will be made by users, as well as other moderators, however, ultimately what action is taken is that deemed appropriate by the admins.

    2. If you don't like the way the forum is run, you have the choice not to sign in, and not to post. If you don't like the foruma dmin, moderators, or posters, and keep coming back, that says more about you then anyone else.

why not make the cesspool such a forum?

Just for kicks, I voted yes.

We could all go to the anonymous forum and be absolute cunts.

Plus it would be fun trying to identify people.

How will this make Sci a better place?

It wouldn't. It would still be quite funny though.

It would have a place for discussion which is anonymous, which would spark some interesting discussion-
Possibly the question would be asked weather or not it should soon be deleted if it doesn't work.
It would spark many interesting discussions and be a test for sci-forums quality discussions in the first place.
    It would be "fun".

More interesting than claiming that gravity doesn't exist, or that black people were better off as slaves?

    Seriously? How?

    For who?

It's not that gravity doesn't exist, but it would be welcoming. Interesting.

Anonymous discussions, anonymous qualities. Probably more politicial and different.

    The people interested in it.

Welcoming to who though? For every legitimate, intelligent poster there are about 1000 dumbasses out there. This forum is already free to sign up for in any case, so I don't see how you can make it "more welcoming" than it already is...

There is already a high degree of anonymity here though. The only thing that keeps (most) people from spouting total garbage is the fact that they can be identified through their handle and profile and possibly their email address. And by knowing their online personality we can more easily identify sockpuppets.

What do you think will happen once you allow for total anonymity? It's a lot easier to be a douche bag online than it is in real life...

Yeah, but if they really were interested in posting on this site in the first place, they would register. Most people just come here just to browse or look at topics for a few minutes and then move on. I don't see how an completely anonymous forum would prove to be of any use in that regard.

Why should we? I personally never read any of the topics there, unless topic was recently moved there.

We would hope an anonymous forum, would share qualities of difference and (hopefully) some professionalism or some such.
This is yet to be discussed.

True I guess. But its also not as true as you'd think. Most people here use this forum for chatting.

This forum would not abide by douchebag behavior. I would suspect that it would be a lot different (hopefully in intelligent ways...) than it is here at present. Gah.

Well I don't know either then.
I do but, echelion or whatever.
    !!
Like I said above, it would provide an interesting alternative to the route taken.
    However.

I am proposing an anonymous subforum, for the registered members - not advocating all of Sciforums going anonymous. It could exist experimentally down there beside the Cesspool - or even as a subforum of the Cesspool.

I almost fell out of my chair when I read this.

You're out of your mind if you think this is what would happen.

Well, its nice to know that I found another forum that did experiment with complete anonymity: http://www.explore-ideas.com/

Here are some of the most recent topics:

    1) Hello, I am looking to create a product about "Life as an Entertainer" and am hear to ask everyone would they would like to know about the business?...

    2) Sex is over rated. Love is under rated. Sex has become about performance for men, and power for women. ...

    3) Indeed, if the pen is very very sharp, and the sword is very very small and blunt....

Real professional if I say so myself. I don't think this site has to actually experiment with this themselves, better to observe all other data points before commiting to this "project".
