A guy driving a 1993 Honda Civic was ticketed for doing 137 in a 65. How in the hell does a '93 Civic do 137 mph?

With Rato bottle attached to car with duct tape.

Wait! Wait! Or, he was being bump drafted by Mark Martin in his NASCAR ride.

Check this out. An English guy got a ticket for doing 98 mph in a civic and beat the ticket by proving his car could not go over 85!:

An English driver has beaten a 98 MPH speed camera ticket by re-purchasing his Honda Civic and paying a firm to test the vehicle. The Civic's top speed as tested? 85 MPH.

21-year-old Dale Lyle was shocked to receive the ticket for going 98 MPH in the mail not only because he has a perfect driving record and no longer owned the car in question anymore, but because his 1.3-liter Honda Civic could barely get up to highway speed, much less do nearly 100 MPH.

The penalty for the ticket could have been a fine of as much as $1,400 and a six-month driving ban.

Dale told the Daily Mail, “'I've never driven my car over the speed limit, let alone at 98mph. It's such a small car I wouldn't feel safe.”

Determined to beat the charge, Dan took out a loan to buy the Civic back from his friend, then turned it over to an independent expert who verified the Civic’s 85 MPH top speed on Millbrook’s high-speed banked oval. The same one used in many Top Gear episodes.

Presented with the results, the Crown Prosecution Service had no choice but to drop the case. Dale will now seek compensation for the $1,700 and many hours of his own time that it took to prove his innocence.

Dale’s advice to other motorists? “The video evidence the CPS sent me was just appalling. They are just picking on innocent motorists. It makes you wonder how many people say, "Fine, give me the points", when they are not guilty.” Fight the power, Dale. http://njection.com/blogs/jalopnik/...a-civic-can-only-hit-85-mph-offbeat-news.aspx

The car might be a '93, but is the engine?

Civics are one of the most popular cars to modify. They put acura engines in there and twin turbos, they can get to 500hp.

This is what's left after you hit a pothole at 140mph in a civic.

Probably, but they often have really good suspension systems on there too.

What model Civic was it? There are several different types of Honda Civics as well, each with different performance. If it was one of the higher models, I can see it reaching those speeds. Throw a couple mods in and it could hit that no problem.

Also, what was the year of the one from the UK? Are the computers in UK vehicles governed in any way with rev limiters?

I had a '91 Honda CRX Si that I have done ~130mph in on multiple occasions.
That car only had 108 hp (but it also only weighed 2100lbs). A '93 Civic Si hatchback had almost 130 hp, and didn't weigh much more.
So 137 mph in a stock 93 Civic Si is entirely feasible, and if it was modded, very likely.

As spidergoat said, I'm sure it was heavily moded. Civics seem to be one of the current favorites for car nuts who want to stick senselessly stick huge engines into cars that weren't really built for it.

I used to have a '90 CRX Si. Great little car, and lots of fun to drive

I bet all they would have to do is kill the rev limiter to go that fast. I have driven a stock saturn at 110. Fast acceleration is harder to achieve than top speed.

One of the reasons the civic is so popular with car modders is that they can handle it

Yes it was, but I have an '05 STi now. The fun-to-drive factor of the CRX just pales in comparison to the Subaru though.

Civics are popular in the modding community because they are relatively cheap (for an import, anyway), they are common in general (easy to find replacement parts and keeps costs down), and because there are so many mod options available.

Any car can be modified to go much faster that it does from the factory. With just a few minor modifications you can get at least 30 MPH more speed from most cars minimum.

The civic is a popular model for mod projects. There is an endless aftermarket of superchargers and whatnot.

He could also use nitrous oxide.
