what I like about anime is not that it is so surrealistic, but that it is not afraid to open limitless possibilities of imagination.

Having just finished it, I wanted to plug Monster, the story of a Japanese neurosurgeon living in Germany, is accused of murder and spends years on the run hunting doen the real killer.

That was 74 episodes of pure win. No fight of the week, no martial arts, no magic, no swords and the "monsters" are all figurative but man was it good.

I strongly suggest nobody ever watches 'Big O', it's the biggest pile of shit ever dreamed up, I have watched about 3-4 episodes of that show and it's seriously the worst show ever, Im not even talking about anime standards I mean the worst show ever ever ever out of everything ever made ever!. It's so boring and is just a bunch of emotionless wierd people who live in a stupid dome walking about saying "I dont remember anything, we have no history" the main character is some cheap Bruce wayne/james bond immitation, who occasionaly jumps into a 400 ft tall gay looking robot.

Big O gets a Big NO, from Emptyforceofchi.

    peace.

After watching the end of Code Geass I feel rejuvenated, finely got ride of the vomit flavor in my mouth after watching the end of avatar the last airbender: no offense but us America sucks at animation, our most recent attempt at an epic cartoon was so pathetic it was like being hit with a care bear stare!

Here is proof of how horrible americans are at cartoons today: compare America's version of Darkstalkers with Japans
    Japans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1qUH7AucfE

Now americans (I DARE YOU TO WATCH IT TO ITS END, IF YOU SURVIVE YOU WILL BE A BETTER MAN THAN ME!!!):

Hate to burst your bubble but japan does not have magical forest, I would recommend Sakhalin if you looking for magical forest haunted by benign spirits, its just north of xenophobic insane racists japan.

I pretty much stick to the Cartoon Network fare and Miyazaki. One of the things I like about anime is that some of the writers are completely enchanted by their work. It's one of the reasons I adored Dragonball and DBZ. (Never could get into GT.)

I'm not as enthusiastic about the latest CN selections, though. Then again, I don't have cable, so I'm not getting my dose on a regular basis. Still, though, Bleach and Deathnote, just aren't catching my eye. And FLCL, while it's great to watch stoned, isn't particularly captivating.

In my mind, I remember Battle Angel impressed the hell out of me when I first saw it years ago. I'm happy to discover, in putting this post together, that the film has finally been issued on DVD.

In the meantime, though, it will be a while before I get sick of Inuyasha, Stand Alone Complex, and Full Metal Alchemist; and it's high time I actually built a real Miyazaki collection instead of watching one here or there when I come across it.

And I'll raise a glass to Star Blazers. Unfortunately, my DVD collection of that one is wrecked at my daughter's hands, but they're archived copies, so I'll have to make an effort to dig out the originals.

Beyond that, though, I can't say much has caught my eye. Well, .hack//Sign, but it will be a while before I sit down and watch those in sequence.

I can't recall most of the crappy anime I've seen over the years. Although I do recall Bubblegum Crisis, and a couple of scenes haunt me to this day. But I couldn't tell you which film or series delivered a shipload of virgins to a prison barge for mass rape, nor the name of the one where the jealous co-worker spiked the weather girl's coffee with laxatives, causing her to shit herself on the air.

And I can't remember the name of the Catholics vs. Vampires series I caught on CN last year, nor the Vietnamese girls' school one that I actually halfway enjoyed.

But, yeah, it's kind of pathetic. I used to have a list of films I needed to see. I lost it, of course. Couldn't tell you what was on it. Well, Escaflowne, but it's not a high priority.

The first is definitely Trinity Blood, which had decent music and little else. The second sounds like Blood+ which had unbelievable music and was somewhat entertaining until they went to America.

I really have enjoyed Hell Girl, on IFC, for at least having an engaging premise and an interesting self-conscious amorality to it that leaves me thinking. That said, though the episodes are stand alone, after 20 or so, I am sensing some repetition in the story lines of the victims. It was excellent for the first 18 or so episodes though.

I also enjoyed Mushi-shi, which has no overall story arc, each episode is its own thing, which makes it easy to fit into the schedule (unlike Monster, which was a 80ish episode crime drama in the vein of the Fugitive, but had a definite overarching plotline that was always being advanced--excellent, but I didn't want to wander away from the series for fear I'd forget the details of prior episodes).

Hear hear!! That and Macross are my favorite Anime series...more or less the only anime series that I like. I usually stick to full length films.

I have a few movies that you and every Anime buff needs to see (if you haven't already)
    -Vampire Hunter D
-Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (ridiculously sharp animation)
-Macross Plus (actually composed of four 30 minute episodes)
-Akira (probably the most well-known classic)
    -Wicked City
-Steam Boy (sharpest, most detailed animation I have ever seen in any other Anime film...if any of you have any others that even come close, I'm all ears)

    mikenostic,

I felt Howl's flying castle was better animated then steamboy. As for a show I think Ergo Proxy has set the high bar but I bet something has beaten it by now.
