One word that I've noticed people misuse a lot is versus. It is often turned into a verb ("the Angels are versing the Diamondbacks today") or otherwise used incorrectly.

My pet peeves, as far as the English language is concerned, are:

    "passed" for "past"

    "then" for "than"

    "principle" for "principal"

    "it's" for "its"

And, above all: "could care less" for "couldn't care less" (yes, I know there's some lame excuse for this, but I don't buy it. It's simply absurd).

These are all homonyms! They are pronounced identically (except for then and than in formal speech) so why should we have to learn to spell them differently? English spelling is difficult enough!
My favorite is "flammable." There's no such word; it's "inflammable," "capable of being inflamed." But everybody thought the in- was a negative prefix so they took it off.

Like somebody was going to see a gigantic tanker semi-trailer with the word INFLAMMABLE painted on it in red letters as big as people, and say to himself, "Gee, I guess they did that to let me know that it's NOT full of gasoline so it WON'T catch fire if I shoot at it. Funny, the milk truck and the Pepsi-Cola truck didn't have that on it. Just this here Standard Oil truck. I wonder what it's carrying. Oh well, it says inflammable so I won't worry about it."

News reporters & anchors often say universe instead of galaxy or even solar system.

    Yesterday.
He posted that shit at least 4 times now in different threads. He's just a spammer.

No, why do you feel the need to do the whole 'reported' thing? Why announce it?

    Because it pisses him off.

??? how do you know? You did it to me as well. Didn't piss me off. Was that your intention?

No, that wasn't my intention with you. I usually let people know when I report them, there's no particular reason for it.
But with him I know, because of how he reacted in another thread.

It's always good to catch them getting something wrong that you know about. That way you can be skeptical about everything else they say.

What are you talking about? Drphail's post? I was trying to find the connection to linguistics, much less to this thread. About all I can find is the fact that it's horribly written and we could use it as a lesson.

    If he's a spammer I'll ban him.

    Yep, DrPhail.
I reported him 3 times yesterday, his posts were then removed by the designated mod.
This time he only posted part of the lyrics, yesterday it was the whole thing.
I don't know if he already got a warning..

you clearly don't know the lyrics, it was laced with with synonyms and misuses of words... you're oblivious... that's how it is relative to this thread, but whatever

I'm a musician and I've never heard of that song, so I wonder how many of the other members are familiar with it. So far only a couple of people have recognized it and the rest are scratching their heads.

But okay, I'll accept your reasoning for posting it in Linguistics even though it fell flat.

Now please explain your excuse for posting it in all the other subforums? It sure looks like trolling to me.

Several moderators had to go to a lot of trouble to delete those off-topic posts. I'm not going to ban you but I can't promise that they won't.

Please don't assume that everyone knows your favorite songs. If you just want to chat about music please go the Art & Culture subforum.
