Hi there! I'm pretty new to these forums, so I apologize if this sort of thing isn't allowed here.

I recently launched a site whose goal is to allow people to share the knowledge they've gained through their experiences. Most posts are a couple sentences long, and they usually describe some phenomenon, misconception, fallacy, etymology, or otherwise rare but interesting piece of knowledge. We created the site in order to help people who are interested in learning new things but may not have special access to academic journals, or may not want to bother reading through them or Wikipedia articles to find the interesting stuff.

So, I invite you guys to share that sort of stuff here, and I'll post them on the site (unless you don't want me to). I post this request here because I figure a lot of you know some really cool stuff that most people (who know little about your particular field of study) aren't aware of. If you want to visit the website itself, the URL is: sharetolearn.net

So anyway... go ahead, tell me something I don't know!

    Sean

    i like it
being a general dullard in the sciences, i am sure i have many misconceived notions of stuff
    for instance....

Electric currents in copper wires are a flow of electrons, but these electrons are not supplied by batteries. Generators do not 'generate' them. Instead the electrons come from the wire. In copper wire, copper atoms supply the flowing electrons. The electrons in a circuit were already there before the battery was connected. They were even there before the copper was mined and made into wires! Batteries and generators do not create these electrons, they merely pump them, and the electrons act like a pre-existing fluid which is always found within all wires. In order to understand electric circuits, we must imagine that all the wires are pre-filled with a sort of "liquid electricity." (link)

    the frikkin wire!

Since we do not know what you already know how can we tell you anything because you might already know it!

A thermodynamics professor had written a home exam for his graduate students. It had only onequestion:

"Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?
Support your answer with a proof."

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expandsand heats up when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

"First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So, we need to know the rate thatsouls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once
a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the worldtoday. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more thanone religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to Hell; with birth and death rates asthey are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in orderfor the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as soulsare added, this gives two possibilities:

    1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then thetemperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

    2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then thetemperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Therese Banyan during my freshmanyear, 'That it will be a cold night in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact thatI still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then 2 cannot betrue, and so Hell is exothermic."

This student got the only A.

@cosmictraveler: I've seen that before, haha, it's great. But it's also not true

See, I knew that there are things you know that we don't know about you.

    It is a true statement.

The word "phony" is thought to be older than the word "phone", though the spelling, with a 'ph' may be more recent. It's thought that it may come from the slang term "fawney," a seeimingly valuable (but actually not) ring used in a common type of con by criminals, where they pretend to be in dire need of cash and offer to "reluctantly" sell the ring for a bargain price.

Only one man has ever served as boith Chief Justice of the United States and Secretary of States simultaneously. He was both Secretary of State and Chief Justice for about a month and a half from January to March, 1801.
