Seriously?!!! :bugeye: I'm speechless. OMG, I can't even imagine what they think of Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd and Road Runner/Wylie Coyote cartoons.

A TV advert which showed pop singer Duffy cycling through a supermarket has been cleared by an advertising watchdog after health and safety complaints.

Eighteen viewers complained the singer, from Nefyn, Gwynedd, was not wearing reflective clothing and her bicycle had no lights in the Diet Coke commercial.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) also said four viewers worried children could copy her behaviour. :wallbang:

Tell them to watch the Jackass movies if they're worried about copying behavior.

    Doesn't surprise me.
We've got someone, somewhere who'll complain about anything.

Oh heck, Tom & Jerry have been deemed "unsuitable" because in some episodes Tom rolls a cigarette with one hand (paw) when he's chatting up female cats - this has been declared to make smoking look potentially cool and therefore those scenes are either cut or the episode is not shown.

Me, I'm off to find a large safe to drop on people's heads before the busybodies tell me it's dangerous or something silly like that.

Yes, one of those was me. I thought she it was an affront to British morals. She'd obviously not thought it out properly and was setting a bad example to our nation's children. I was afraid young people might think it was right and sound to cycle through a supermarket whilst singing like a hamster being squeezed by the balls.

Cartoons are less likely to influence people than the latest cool popstar is, which is especially a problem when she's shown breaking the law. It's about the same level as movies or games where there's always a small group of people who believe they may influence others, and there's probably a small group of people who are influenced.
It's also a less serious issue, people will be more likely to ride around without lights and a helmet after watching Duffy than to go on a road runner killing spree with acme products. It's a subtle difference, and in essence is the whole point of the ad, "look what Duffy drinks, she's cool right? You want to be like her right? Drink cola". Simple.

18 complaints, out of a population of 60,000,000. Oh, and it's not a legal requirement to wear reflective gear on a bike, so those 18 complaints were talking out of their collective assholes.

It's a legal requirement for bikes ridden at night to have front and rear lights, she has neither. They must also be fitted with a red rear reflector.

So what do you think about this woman Orleander? http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/16/nyregion/16bigcity.html?ex=1402891200&en=a0aa56130c9b56bf&ei=5124

Her extreme methods have earned her attention before: The police were called to a Y.M.C.A. in 2007 when she absconded with the sprinkles and syrups on a table where members were being served ice cream. That was Ms. Roth who called Santa Claus fat on television that Christmas, and she has a continuing campaign against the humble Girl Scout cookies, on the premise that no community activity should promote unhealthy eating.

“She has some valid points, but the way she delivers them is abrasive,” said Jim Stanek, a fellow P.S. 9 parent, who responded angrily to an e-mail message Ms. Roth sent to around 75 parents saying that the physical education teacher who served her children doughnuts probably “couldn’t pass a standardized phys ed. test.”

    -=-

Are reflectors & lights required for riding in a supermarket?

No, the only requisite is a nasal whine.

I can't go shopping ever again, I'm too scared to walk down the tinned foods aisle for fear of being knocked over by a crazy welsh singer on a bike. Still, at least it isn't Tom Jones. I can hear the haunting voice now "it's not unusual to ride bikes in tesco stores...."

I can't seem them, but then, most of the long shots are in the supermarket car park, where the law wouldn't apply.

Also, we are assuming this is the UK, ... it's not clear what country it's supposedly taking place in.

But the fact that people complained about something that isn't a requirement (the reflective gear) says a lot about the whinging assholes that complained.

Wouldn't you say it's unreasonable to presume she stopped to remove them before entering the car park, given the flow of the ad?
Also seeing as there would be cars driving around I would have thought the law applied, I'm pretty sure you still have to have your car lights on when driving in a car park, so why not bikes? The part of the law I read didn't specify it just said "at night".

Well in the car the steering wheel is on the right, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume it's the UK. The section after that appears to show her riding on the pavement too, however it's hard to tell.
Regardless I think the complaint is that it might influence people to behave similarly in the UK, which would be contrary to the laws of the country where the ad is shown.

Correct, and I don't approve all that much, however it can be considered a reasonable safety concern, especially as the government spends a lot of money encouraging young people to ride safely. I actually wouldn't be surprised if the ad was designed to deliberately ignore safety concerns to gain more publicity.

We know it's a bullshit ad anyway, there's no way she drinks coke.

PC is part of a dumbing down process, it renders thinking people petty and ridiculous in the UK, in the States, in the mountains and in the valley. Its the left's way of limiting and silencing discussion insinuating no one should think for themselves and if they do not to speak it out loud.

This has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with the usual people who used to sit behind net curtains and complain about loud children. Usually conservative voters.

It's not new... Mary Whitehouse use to constantly try to keep both the Goodies and Monty Python in line.

Anyway it's Super-safe P.C. Britain. You can't have people wrecklessly endangering themselves, they at least need the proper protection and bubblewrap and they most certainly can't ride their bicycle on the road, theres not enough crumplezones for the poor drivers to collide with.

Incidentally... I should complain about Bus lanes, as they tend to merge Cyclists and Buses to the same lane. I'm sorry but I think the Bus will win during any forms of collision.

(incidentally I had to change the thread title, Too many complaints)

It's worse where taxis are allowed too.
    I just use the path.
