    This is a short guide that will walk you through a couple steps that will help speed up your computer.

    1. Startup Processes

    * Go to: Start>Run>Type "msconfig"(without the quotes)
    * Go to the Startup Tab
    * Uncheck any processes you don't use at startup(e.x. Quicktime, AIM, MSN)
    * Click Apply then Restart

    2. CCleaner
    CCleaner is a great little application that deletes cookies, clears cache, empties your recycle bin, etc.

    * Download CCleaner(from google)
    * Iinstall CCleaner then Run Cleaner it(note: This will clear your cookies which means your saved passwords and usernames will be gone)
    * Go to the Registry tab and Scan for Issues
    {*]After its finished scanning click>Fix selected issues...>Fix All Selected Issues>Ok. Continue this process until scanning brings about no issues.

    3. Bootvis.exe

    * Download bootvis.exe(from google)
    * Install bootvis.exe
    * In the toolbar go to Trace>Optimize System. The system will reboot after 10 seconds.

    If you guys wanna REALLY turn up the speed of your comptuer, Ill tell you how to overclock it SAFELY.

    If you do in fact wanna overclock, Ill tell you how to. But first, you absolutely MUST replace the stock cpu cooler to something a whole lot better otherwise you will indeed fry your cpu.

    Now overclocking is a lot safer than msot claim it to be. Its like saying driving will kill you, driving wont kill you so long as yoru careful, watch what your doing, and keep safe.

    Now, depending on the cpu you can overclock more if you like. Overclocking drastically and i stress DRASTRICALLY improve the quality of your computer.

    If you wanna learn how, send me the specs of your computer

    If you dont know what processer you have, go to "run" type in dxdiag (stands for system diagnostic or something like that) and it will show a tabel with all the info for your hardware, send me the info on the first tab. Specifically what kind of cpu you have. And what cpu cooler you have, Also, optional but HEAVILY recommended is that you tell me what kind of case you have. Gaming cases are best specifically because 1.) they got tons of room, and 2.) they have lots of fan with ventilation.

    Now, unless you are very adept at assembling or deassembling your computer specifically your motherboard, you want to go to Geek squad or the equivalent to install your cpu cooler.

    The stock cpu coolers are meant to keep STANDARD cpus at good operating temperatures, around 70 degrees celsius or less. If you try and overclok just a little bit I promise you that your temperature will skyrocket with a standard cpu.

    Now if you want soemthing that is exceptionally good for cooling, id recommend getting a liquid cooling kit. Nothing cools better than a good cpu block.

    Any computer expert will tell you that msconfig does not do the business it intends and is harmful. Also Registry cleaners, especially the so called freebies can also be detrimental to your pc health. I konw, I used them.

    I bought a software program called Advanced Windows Care from Iobit.com and it does the job so much better but it is no substitute in boot up terms for having an up to date BIOS software.

    My 18 month old quad core 3gb ram pc decided it was going into ultra slow boot up, it took 2-3 minutes to do what it did in about 10 seconds. I contacted HP and they sent me a link to a bios upgrade. download, click, self install, BANG!! From Biplane to Mach 3 in an instant!!

    A few years ago a mate of mine overclocked his pc and swore it was the 'bees knees' and was recommending it to one and all - his heatsink glue melted and it fell off and his pc caught fire!!

    No offense man, but i have to call bullshit on the story about the heatsink glue.

    First off, your heatsink doesnt use glue in any which way whatsoever, it uses thermal paste.

    The only way your heatsink would come off is if the screws attaching it to the board or the board itself broke which I find to be so incredibly unlikely.

    And plus, The inside of your pc is practically ALL metal which was forged at something around 1000 degrees farenheit. Which converts to a several hundred degrees celsius.

    Now, the reason that stories bullshit is because of the fact that most cpus wil literally fry at around 70+ degrees celsius, and even guys on youtube that tested how hot a cpu could get without its heatsink got an average of like 300 ish degrees celsius before it fryed.

    The CPU glue couldnt possibly get hot enough to melt let alone set fire to a computer, assuming he didnt stuff it with newspaper.

    If you were that stupid to overclock your computer THAT MUCH than you deserved for it to be on fire. Seriously, its like putting a 9 year old in a car and putting him on a highway.

    There is nothing in the computer for the molten heatsink TO catch on fire, tis practically all metal.

    And also, if you did indeed by some miracle overclock a cpu that much, your computer literally COULD NOT start up. It is so bad that you literally have to manually remove a few chips on your mobo (motherboard) to make it work again.

    Devil, there is no possible way for the above story to happen.

    reg cleaners really do clean out the registry and depending on how many programs you install and uninstall many entries will be left behind. even on a fresh install some entries get removed by cleaners. this really only effect startup times though.

    i have never heard of msconfig causing any problems.

    Overclocking is the only surefire way to get your cpu to work faster.

    The purpose of overcloking literally means speeding up your cpu. If you can do it well, your computer will be lightning fast.

    I use an overclocked computer, lemme tell you, I can run Crysis on the highest settings at around 60+ fps which if your not a gamer, that amount of power puts you in the 90th percentile of those that can even get it to run.

    Now you can downlaod all the programs you like, they dont speed up your computer, they just turn off programs which slow you down.

    But eventually and inevitably it gets to the point where you run out of things to turn off, ba youve hti a brick wall and youve got no away around it.

    Cpu overclocking PHYSICALLY, increases the speed of your CPU,

    Im not talking about hd video, i mean computer games.

    To render a computer game is infinitely more dificult simply because a video is 2d and a game is 3d.

    it is all 2d because a monitor is not 3 dimensional. the way it looks 3d is the size of the objects and shadows.

    About overclocking:

    If the CPUs speed is increased by let's say 10%, how much is the performance increase? 10%? Is it linear?

    What is the max. what you can overclock your system with?

    The max depends on the components used (different CPUs have different overclocking potentials) and the cooling used. More serious overclockers use water cooling for getting rid of the excess heat.

    There is no free lunch. Increasing the speed of a CPU increases the heat it produces. In turn, this will increase the resistance, which requires more voltage to overcome it. This increase the heat production still further. If conventional heatsinks with fans are used, they require high CFM fans that are generally noisy. Water cooling requires a whole system. While these systems generally work well, and are quiet, they are more trouble to set up, cost more, and have their own set of hazards (water leaking in your PC is very bad). You can spend quite a bit of money cooling your PC, http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/

    For most people most of the time, it's easier to just occasionally upgrade, and leave everything running at stock speeds.

    of course in a game it is rendering on the fly so then yes it is very cpu intensive.

    Well, I asked about numbers, %, not about the description. So is the performance advantage of overclocking linear?

    no offence taken but I didnt say it was my pc. Apparently, as far as he can recall it was insulation that smouldered. As for the heatsink, the paste 'ran' for whatever reason but as he was overclocked, he assumed this to be the case. The CPU didn't 'fry' but it was 'stinking hot' to quote my friend.

    Rubbish. MSCONFIG was/is just a simple program to deal with a few configurations on your system, It can be used to turn off programs from loading up by disabling the registry keys associated with them. Obviously though it doesn't delete rogue programs or the keys, that is entirely up to you the user.

    If you want to remove the keys then learn to use REGEDIT and a search engine, between the two you can work out which keys can go and which can stay, obviously though there are tens of thousands of keys to navigate, so you will be looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack if you don't know what you are doing.

    The simplest method of speeding a PC up without overclocking is just to stop running applications that you don't intend to use, for instance Antivirus applications are only good if they are watching for memory resident viruses, you only need to run them otherwise when you download a new file to check it. Various programs have updater programs that will on login attempt to check to see if the system has the most recent version, now this is fine if you want to keep up to date however if you have 10 programs all checking the internet on bootup, you are going to find your login process slowing to a crawl in no time.

    So learn how to until "Run at startup" for those programs, or disable them starting using "MSCONFIG" (Which Red Devil incidentally thinks has no use)

    I'd suggest doing manual updates regularly yourself, then you are in charge when something is updated, you know if something goes wrong from that point it was due to an update rather than trying to login and finding it bluescreening. (Of course using Logs is your friend in this instance)

    I cannot say. It would probably take an electrical engineer to be able to give you a meaningful answer. And even then, it would probably depend on what components you are overclocking - video card GPU, or memory, CPU, system memory?

    For more information, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overclocking

    Red, I repeated the story to overclock.net, here is the link with replies

    http://www.overclock.net/intel-general/580038-cpu-setting-comp-fire.html

    And these arent in experianced guys, these are people whom have overclocked dozens of cpus, and have been in the business a long ass time.

    And all of them call bullshit.

    Oh and, there is no insulation inside of a computer, why would you even WANT to put insulation inside a computer? Its an idiotic and stupid idea. And if he did do that, than he deserved to have his computer go on fire.

    And also, the paste doesnt "run" its pretty much a puttyish material and it can sustain incredibly high temps. Red, tell your buddy that a professional and his other professional friends said that his story is bullshit.
