People subconciously view death as a final end to suffering. With a chronic condition of physical pain and/or mental depression it can become a more desireable alternative than living.

I wouldn't council a priest about depression. I would council a priest about spiritual issues, and have done so on occasion regarding my own conscience.

I agree. A mental health professional is far more qualified. Depression is often a result of chemical imbalances in the brain involving seratonin and other chemicals. Medications can only be prescribed by certain health care professionals with a license to do so.

maybe its a cry for help, they're obviously not happy.

some family friends of mine, the grandpa tried to commit suicide because he'd watched his daughter take 2 years to die from melanoma, and he had brain cancer. his explanation was he didn't want to put his wife through that, watching him slowly die and lose his mind (brain cancer caused him to lose his memory).

you're free to wonder whether he did it for himself or not, but my understanding is that he was a pretty tough bloke, he'd been through a lot in his time, i doubt he was feeling overly sorry for himself.

saying that its weak to kill urself depends on ur motivation. i don't like eating tofoa, so i don't eat it. if i didn't like living, i wouldn't do that either. not having the courage to kill urself is weak too.

you always hear that, does anyone have studies backing it up? googling briefly i couldn't find reliable sources, but one site was saying 10% of cases are caused by biological shit.

i was depressed years ago, and i didn't think it was a chemical imbalance, i'm a bit pessimistic, (more so at the time) i wasn't enjoying school or being single and i was worried about a lot of stuff.

the old bio or enviroment debate, acording to a very experianced clinical psycologist i spoke to they dont worry about it any more because its to much of a feedback loop. Low mood causes lowering of seritonin levels which causes lower mood ect ect, it doesnt matter wether the initial was internal or external if you could even find that out. All depression is treated by cognative theropy in the first instance and anti depressents as a stop gap measure while definitive treatment is carried out (think of it as asprin on the way to hospital for a cardiac pt, stops them getting worse) but is NOT definitive treatment in and of itself

Asguard, you having the courage and heart to share in the original post and create this thread is the classiest most most impressive thing I have ever seen at sciforums. With depression and suicidalness being so common I am sure there are many people here who have at one time been or will in the future be depressed and suicidal. I tried to kill myself once 30+ years ago, I wasn't very good at it and wasn't very committed and did not try again and I am happy about that now.

I am not so sure that taking peoples sky fairies away from them is a good thing. Irrational belief in God is the only thing keeping some people alive. Religion has done a lot of harm but it may have done as much or more good (whatever good is).

You might think that the fact that atheists tend to be more ethical, honest and intelligent than believers proves religious superstition is harmful but I think that being more honest, and intelligent and therefore less self-deceptive is what drives individuals towards atheism and away self-deceptive selfishness. For more self-deceptive people religion may reduce their selfishness and comfort them in their pain and give them something to live for.

Truth can hurt because it can strip away meaning/purpose. I think something in the human body/mind is programmed to make people suffer to the point of suicidalness when meaning is stripped away.

    the "selfishness" concept...
is about as far from the truth as you can possibly get and is a concept derived by a selfish mind to try and invalidate any blame that person may carry for feeling like they have emotionally abused the suicide victim or contributed in any way through action or inaction.

For Seasonal Affective Disorder, look into a flourescent light for a while. It should clear up the problem significantly. The symptoms of SAD can be triggered by poor lighting conditions indoors, so consider getting better lighting for your home if you are prone to this.

    http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/40548.php

Also, consider adding some color to your surroundings. Hitting all three types of cones works the best, but some people have found themselves to be drawn to certain colors and offended by others. The article that the above hyperlink leads you to suggests that ultraviolet light could help raise endorphin levels, and this could help reduce feelings of discomfort. For God's sake, don't paint your house yellow.

You want to drink plenty of water. This can help improve cardiovascular function, resulting in a superior blood supply for your brain. It increases alertness and focus to keep your system replenished with fresh water. It can be useful for managing a depression-related emergency when other means are unavailable.

Consider raising an animal or a plant. Visible things in the room that depend on you are useful as arguments against self-destructive thinking. However, I would not suggest a placental mammal or bird for a person who is not accustomed to being around these animals, and I would recommend either plants or fish. If you want to have a more interesting animal, consider cat-sitting or fostering first. You can ask about fostering at your local animal shelter, and there are cat clubs in many cities that give you opportunities to watch another person's animal. It is dangerous to your emotional health to be forced to surrender an animal after having developed an attachment to it.

Don't feel guilty for leaning on other people. This is stupid, but many people who suffer from depression suffer from irrational feelings of guilt. You are not being a "johnny raincloud." Your friends don't mind helping you if you are being cooperative and polite. It is a very good idea to be cooperative and polite when someone is helping you with your emotional baggage. This makes the task almost pleasurable and hardly burdensome.

Try to get sufficient sleep. However, it is a myth that you should sleep for eight hours every night, and sleeping more than necessary can worsen depression for some people. Six or seven hours is sufficient for most people. If you suffer from insomnia, try installing very bright lights in your house, and turn them on when you wake up. There are pigments in your eyes that are responsible for regulating your circadian cycle, and insufficient or inconsistent lighting during the morning can cause problems in this area.

Finally, consider keeping a few tins of sardines handy. The Omega-3 fatty acids in these fish can help to alleviate depression and elevate mood. They are also rich in B-vitamins. B-vitamins are good for central nervous system health, and fish are especially high in vitamin B6. Vitamin B6, which is also known as "pyridoxine," is servicable as a mood elevator.

Just because you suffer from depression does not mean that it should rule your life. There are things that you can do to alleviate the stress that it causes you. You have a right to a better standard of living. Be angry.

Well I have been pretty depressed lately, not like years ago when I was near cutting but even so it's pretty intense. I goto work, come home, sit and stair at the ceiling for awhile and sleep. I have no friends and no life / anytime I think I might find one it's taken away by fate. Well ok I have 2 friends from online I call via phone regularly, they are older women and a sense of comfort for me, but how can they know what a man goes through when he's depressed for so many reasons? lol

On a side note the depression services really do suck badly, even on a forum you can vent more easily as some will probably agree instead of trying to sugarcoat an otherwise dismal lifestyle. I have found mostly that depression services seek only to prevent death but not make you actually improve life through happiness. For example I'm not against medication, but giving someone just medication and talking to them with no real input just sucks, you never get better only calmer. I remember there was one that I went through, they had no real insight into why loud noises hurt me when I was upset (asperger's syndrome related) or what other nervous system issues I had like enjoying smooth surfaces like keys and them calming me, or smells causing me annoyance, hell when I'm down anything can be a source of frustration. Anyways it's really just a shame, I did however find comfort in online forums where people honestly talk about life sucking or how to change your perspective abit. It's funny but even on forums that weren't related to depression they still had better advice! lol

ok I'm going now, I was watching Sliders on Netflix since sci-fi is my only joy now.

Watch Life of Brian! The ending is really really really good! A person who is really doggedly determined to do so can always find something to whistle about, after all!

Depression is just no to make yourself useful, I work and I keep plants and gardens, and believe me I have no time to be depress, now also depressed people usually they compare themself with other, and believe me there is always somebody doing better than you, thinner than you, more muscular than you, more pretty or whatever, than you. So make yourself comfortable the way the good Lord made you and do your best with the time you got in this earth and use that time to help and to make life better for others. GB

Good advice, but it overlooks the fact that clinical depression is a medical condition and a very reall illness. (If you haven't had it don't knock it.)

    Re: depression services

I think depression services would be helpful for those depressed people seeking help. If not they should be the one to reach out in a not annoying manner. Depressed people do not really give a damn. What they want is attention from those who caused their depression and fulfillment from their frustrations.

Can i disagree with you here?

Depression is an illness! And at times it is diagnosed to late, it os NOT about getting attention (good or bad) from the people who caused it, your right to a point that it is about frustration, frustration about not being able to talk to people (even people who are close to you) it's about where you are and what your doing in life, depressed people often look fine to outsiders but in reality they are suffering.
