It is the kids' fault and it is not easy to correct it .

i don't really understand this rather positivistic tendency to attribute a phenomenon to a singular factor.

Huh? My kids can get roudy and act up at home sometimes but they know when they are at school that they better respect their teachers and not act up, give them attitude or disrupt their class. They KNOW that if I get a call from the school that they are misbehaving to the point the teacher felt the need to notify me, they are in trouble. I can guarantee you that after dealing with me that it won't be continuing.

You know what his teacher also said to me? The kids that she is having the most problems with, are the ones with the parents who did NOT show up at the interviews. What does that say to you? These are also the parents that have been contacted numerous times that their kid is disrupting the class on a regular basis.

She told me that after Christmas break they are going for Zero Tolerance and that the kids will be sent out of the classroom for the entire lesson.
I am happy they are doing that, because I know that it won't be my kid that is sent out missing class.

OMG!!! Hate to say but agreed. Behavior teaching starts at home from a very young age and it is NOT the schools responsibility to enforce it everyday.
The teachers are there to teach the class not teach your child to be respectful enough to shut up and stop fooling around while they are trying to teach a class.

As a society, we are faced with huge problems concerning education . Many skilled jobs can not be filled within the nation and therefore foreign workers are needed . In universities many countries try to attract Chinese and others for PHDs research.....etc.

Good! In 95% of cases, homework is a load of shit.

Homework helps students understand lots of things and when the tests come the students find it easy . If you practice what you learned in class surely the tests will be a piece of cake . Did you forget that : practice makes perfect ?!. I support homework for students any time and anywhere .

In theory. In practice, homework is often irrelevant and excessive.

I find it mind boggling that Shorty thinks there is too little homework. Any parent who consistently helps their children with their homework will get fed up very quickly.

Yep, slather on the meaningless bullshit with a trowel. Don't give the kids any time to play, sleep, or pursue a hobby! Because writing projects about shit they will never need later on in life is oh so important.

Homework is good for repeating what you learned in class, but there is no need for teachers to assign 60 math problems when 5 would suffice (you should only do more if you still don't understand). Just enough to know that you understand it, not make you dedicate the better part of the night to it. When I was little my teachers seemed to get some sort of amusement from dolling out gigantic homework packets. Most of the assignment was just busy work or making us do the same thing over and over again just dressed up different, and that's not cool. I definitely don't believe there should be homework over the weekend or during holiday breaks. That should be personal time to give your brain a break.

Pretty much. Just imagine if your boss gave you work to 'take home' over the weekends, holidays, and leave. You'd tell him to go and fuck himself.

Homework when related to what is learned in class is very beneficial . I used to have books of math, physics and chemistry which have questions and at the end they have answers too . I spent lots of time doing exercises to the point where I got to figure out many points that the teachers ignored in their lectures .

My kid's school agrees with that. And I appreciate it since its kind of our family time.

Then, by your own logic, the problems you had with your teachers are your fault.

For kindergarten to second grade I went to private, Catholic school. It was lame and the nuns who taught were a little abusive.

From 3rd grade until high school graduation I went to public school on Long Island, NY. It was a better education than the private, Catholic school. We lived in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the whole of the country at the time, and the extremely well-funded, taxpayer-supported school district was excellent. The schools received thousands of applications for each position that opened up there, and the teachers made over $100,000 a year. Pretty much every teacher I had was highly qualified and very good. It truly was a first class public education, better than most private schools, and every day I'm happy I got it because after moving out of that area I could very quickly tell the difference between the quality of the graduates any given high school produced.

So... yes, public education *does* work, under the right conditions and with adequate funding. Most public schools do not have this, however.

I think schools and teachers have both deteriorated in quality from what it was 25 years ago.

Was it ever really that great\good?

Either kids are involved and want to learn or they dont. Today kids have more free reign to do what they want and 25 years ago they were more or less forced to do the work. I dont believe in forcing people but some persuasion is necessary although teachers these days seem to only have the option of being nice to the students.

Basically it just boils down to learning and being successful or not learning and being below average.
