I plan to upgrade my PC, DIY!
AMD Phenom II X4 or Intel Quad Core or Intel Core i5 is better?
I am not gamer, just need it for faster speed only.

The main difference between AMD and Intel processors are that AMD processors have a 10 step execution process which doesn't allow as fast of a clock but AMD's counter that by being able to do more operations per clock cycle. Intls on the other hand have a 20 step execution proccess which allows much higher clock speeds but they have fewer operations per clock.

Thats why a 2.08 Ghz AMD barton can perform at levels like a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4. Another difference between the processors are the sockets they use. AMD's generally use Socket A (462 pins) while Intel generally uses Socket 478 (478 pins). Other differences include supported chip sets, AMD motherboards generally use SIS, VIA, or N force chip sets while Intel motherboards use Intel, SIS, and most recently ATI chip sets.

AMD is a favorite for over clockers because with minor modifications the FSB multiplier can be unlocked while Intel multipliers cannot be unlocked (Not to say that AMD is used exclusively by over clockers, because it is not, but this ability to be unlocked is a plus). Also as of now Intel processors have the largest L3 cache at 2mb while the largest for AMD is 1mb.

Because Intel has enjoyed longer commercial success than AMD, you can typically find comparable AMD chips for half the cost. This has to do with brand loyalty and advertising costs as well as the types of memory used in both chips. Intel uses more expensive RDR RAM while the AMD chips use DDR RAM. That said, the RDR RAM is faster (533 MHz versus the 333 MHz of the DDR RAM) and helps to soften the blow of the cost of the chips to the consumer.

I'm running a Opteron 175, back in the day it was the best out there, now I think Intel ahead. Go with what ever is the best performing for the price tag you want, that state will change make and brand every few months so you got to do your research.

Wait a minute this is not the right forum.

AMD is economic and better money for value,
to play game, what is really matter is the Graphic card, I will add a ATI Radeon 4870.

ATI and AMD merge some time ago, they are the same thing and AMD/ATI have plans for the next generation of CPUs to be a fusion of a CPU and GPU in one.

AMD overheats like crazy, no matter what model.

The i5 is going to run quicker with significant potential for over clocking *up to 4.2*. If you can afford it go intel. You have to calculate into your cost not only the more expensive CPU. The chipset of the i5 is less compatible - you'll need DDR3 and the right MB.

probably core i5 is good too for overclocking.
but i think we shall support AMD to prevent intel's monopoly.

Get an Intel Q9400 or Core 2 Duo E8500 - both are superb processors and under $200.

AMD Phenom II X4 950 (or better)
    Intel Core i5

The i5 is a quad core processor, and its socket supercedes the previous quad core socket (755) that the older Intel quad core processor (called "Core 2 Quad") was using. If you intend on jumping up to a multi-core processor, you may as well overlook the older Core 2 Quads unless you want to take advantage of the lower price point.

The current, fastest AMD processor, the Phenom II X4 965 BE, is only a few dollars cheaper than the Core i5. You can find benchmarks which show both processors performing similarly, with a noteworthy edge toward the i5. The premium that the i5 commands over the 965 BE is negligible, and the i5 would be the recommended buy in terms of performance today. Especially since you say you are not a gamer, this traditional strength of the AMD house will not be evident to you if you lean toward the Phenom.

If you only need a "faster speed", it would be useful to know what you're upgrading from. More than likely, the 965 BE and the i5 will grant you faster speed, however marginal that may be.

It is awesome, starting at $200 from your nearest Micro Center or $280-ish online.
