    || Opening post reinstated after consulting the author. It was either this or delete the thread (since the author deleted the opening post earlier).

    Without evolution we would not exist. It is what created us.
    If it was anything other than totally indifferent to the existence of all organisms, we would never have evolved. So here we all are.
    For me and most other people, our lives have been filled with a lot of pain, and will be until we die. Watching loved ones and ourselves age and die, things like that.
    As crude as it sounds, sex is the only thing that makes life seem worth bothering with. I am 60 years old and remain fit and such for now, but see it slipping away,my looks,strength, and such.
    I am an Atheist. Always was. I went to church because my mother made me. Bored senseless listening to nonsense. Fought a war, had and still have some decent sex. But how much longer can that last ?
    I am not afraid of dying and have came very close to it when I was gutshot at 19 years old. It felt very bad. You get very ,very cold for one thing. This is the way it is for all creatures sooner or later, one way or another. Or some other way. Perhaps much worse. Look at what happened to all those people in Haiti.
    How do the rest of you Atheists deal with these sort of feelings ?
    If I did not have other people who depend on me I would end it.
    It, life, is not much fun anymore.
    I do want to age to the point where women no longer find me attractive.
    I hang around to provide money for others. I had a hell of a time but no longer do. Screw it all.

    Without "natural" evolution, apes wouldn't exist, that's for sure. But, "what created us" as humans is not "natural" evolution, it's human technological and cultural evolution. Plus "creation" is a wrong word for any natural process.

    If you are thinking like that, using words/grammer as you do, being able to manipulate millions of unnatural commands, tools and symbols; the natural evolution has nothing to do with it. It's because of something "out of" nature. Saying that "without nature we would never evolved like we are", is similar to saying that "without hydrogen and carbon atoms there wouldn't be any life"...
    But these atoms are irrelevant when we consider DNA and its dynamics as a separate phenomenon. Those atoms are not responsible from individual species, neither responsible from entire evolution process. Similarly, natural evolution is not responsible from what we are as human beings...

    This alone makes you unique, separate and distant from the rest of the natural evolution process. You are bound to know about death, time, process and many other things that evolution has no idea; because it doesn't have any brain to develop ideas in the first place.

    Sex is good, just as eating, because we are hard-wired for this sort of activities. Yet, human beings are not restricted only to sex as "the only thing that makes life seem bothering with".

    I don't know. However, if you say life=sex, you will not enjoy the entire spectrum of life when you are not able to engage sexual intercourse.

    I wonder which other product of natural evolution would feel like that? I can not imagine an old elephant (let's say 60 years old) still thinking and worrying about a bad incident it experienced when it was 19. Or any gorilla feeling sorry for other gorillas that are killed by poachers.
    What you feel and how you feel is human, entirely human.

    I don't know Atheists, but as a non-believer in any mumbo jumbo, I am expecting that one day humans will find some other ways to extend their life-spans, and ageing will no longer bother humans in terms of enjoying life, or existence in general. Being Atheist stops you believing in deities, but it shouldn't stop you believing in human capabilities and possibilities.

    Sorry but this is not an excuse. What if you die tomorrow? Or what will happen those people when you eventually die? Or could your parents stop the bullet hitting you when you were 19?

    Try to learn some new skills; if you can not do sex watch other -young- people; use your 60 year old Atheist life experience to scare the shit out of religious people; or just collect data from your surroundings and put it on internet. You are human, member of the most resourceful species in entire universe.

    Some women had never found you attractive even when you were young. Don't tell me that once you were the girl magnet of the entire planet...

    If you seriously think like that, you are already dead. And a good example for those who propagate religions: "Look at this Atheist, they always end up like that, aimless and mentally weak..." Is that your strategy?

    REPLY: Hello baftan, well, you did manage to quote most of what I said before I deleted it. Look, I became a bit concerned I was being too much of a downer. It is all true. It is the way I feel about my life. Sorry to leave you hanging so to speak. Yes, I feel the only reason I bother hanging around is to provide money for those who depend on me for money. Yes, I am at a point where I feel I am losing my looks to the point that I am no longer attractive and all that. I could go on but maybe Enmos reposted the original posting. ...traveler

    IF.....

    Rudyard Kipling

    IF you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
    And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
    If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    ' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
    if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
    And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

    remember that it isn't what others think of you, its what you think of yourself.

    REPLY: My friend , there is no strategy. There is no goal. I am not trying to make atheist converts. I was trying find out how other Atheists deal with feelings like I have at my age. I have to stay alive to provide for others. I know it sounds like an excuse, but when you get serious inside about it, you cannot ignore how it will impact people you care about. ...traveler

    REPLY: Sorry my friend, that video made me want to blow my brains out. Now, it may be interesting to some. IT IS MY BRAIN I WANT TO ATTACK, DESTROY. I think many others feel this way. I actually met a guy who shot himself straight through the temple, side to side, AND LIVED ! He self lobotomized himself. Compared to a Korean War vet I met at the same VA mental hospital, he was in FAR BETTER shape than the guy who had,had it done surgically. It is true. Life is such a hoot. The poor bastard spent all day every day pushing his head into a wall and making " I am in pain noises ". The one who had a surgical lobotomy. The other guy was not all that bad [ the guy who blew his own brains out ]. It is the truth. I thought it was all very odd. I was on the same ward with these two guys and they were giving me high voltage shock treatments. I did not know my own name. I think the general theory was : BLOW THOSE MEMORIES AWAY! ! Well whatever, I escaped the hospital and got into PRIMAL THERAPY. ...TRAVELER

    You could have just mentioned that you are just a person who feels like you do. But you mentioned being an "Atheist", and wanted to learn how others, other Atheists, are handling this issue. That's why I focused on this point.

    In fact, I sincerely believe that, Atheist or not, human beings always live with the idea of death, they know the difference between being alive and not being alive. Religious people hope for an afterlife and do not get disturb by those ideas. As a non-believer, I see them living in an illusion, but I also admit that this illusion helps them to deal with the unavoidable end. They can imagine the real life itself as a temporary illusion. You can not do that, I can not do that.

    It would be silly thing to offer you to propagate "Atheism"; because there is nothing to propagate in the first place: There is a story, and you don't buy it, simple as that. The bringing on the religious discourse against your feelings was not aimed to energize you against them, or to give you some artificial aim like "converting people", none of these: No matter what they say, or what other Atheists say in that matter, will not make you feel less depressed or more depressed than how you feel right now.

    I used the word "strategy" in terms of your own mental regime for your own mind. You are saying that you have to survive for others. This alone requires some effort; maybe looking after yourself, maybe not committing suicide, maybe this or maybe that: At the end, life is all about strategy. From bacteria to animals. Humans are slightly different in their strategy, they find excuses, they dream. How do you plan to keep supporting your loved ones, sustain your mental peace -so you don't send signals to others such as "I am still alive just because of you"-, and enjoy your life against all terrible things. This is where mental "strategy" becomes important.

    Smoke weed, jack off, read a book, drink some booze, learn to play a musical instrument, learn a craft, get a hobby, talk a walk, get in shape, teach your skills to others... most of these things are at least as rewarding as sex and usually less messy.

    Hi Fellowtraveler, I only reposted what could be salvaged from Baftan's post.
    I have no way of knowing whether or not that was all of it, but I'm fairly sure you ended it with "Screw it all, ...fellowtraveler" instead of just "Screw it all."

    Yeah, but you forgot about; ...agonizing over the plight of starving people in the world, agonizing over the plight of the people in natural disasters, agonizing over the plight of the homeless, agonizing over the plight of the gays and lesbians, agonizing over the plight of the blacks trapped in the ghettos, agonizing over the plight of the Palestinians, agonizing over the plight of the Afghan people, .........

    Wow, when you begin to list all of it, when do we find time for the reading books, drinking booze, playing instruments,....?

    You forgot the neo con and conservative versions of worry...
    agonizing over the fate of white people, highly taxed rich people, agonizing over the lack of complete access to oil fields - read: Iran - agonizing over how feminists make it so hard to be funny anymore, agonizing about how hard it is to get to one's car without being harrassed by those aweful homeless people, agonizing over Chinese software pirates, agonizing about gay parades, piercings....

    you get the idea.
