Well, I went to the doc yesterday and was told I have to have surgery. I go under next Thursday. This is my first major surgery that I've had to have so I'm pretty nervous. They said I might even have to have up to 2 or 3 surgeries over the course of the next few months.

Thank you. This is the first time (aside from widom teeth removal) that I will have been operated on. The surgery is expected to take about 2 hours. The only thing I'm really worried about is the recovery process. It's suppose to take between 2 and 4 weeks to get back to normal activity. Thats a long time to hurt lol. I'm sure there will be a LOT of meditation going on within those weeks.

Good luck Mz. I hope everything goes well for you.

And if they give you the pain relief drip with the little buzzer.. make use of it.. but be careful and don't do what I did and take too much and scare the nurses when I thought I saw baboons at the window trying to break the glass when I went under the knife a few weeks ago.

It (surgery) is scary and your heart will probably race as they prep you, but just keep in mind the end goal.. to get better.

A piece of advice. Ask for an extra heated blanket when they put you on the gurney before they wheel you in. Operating rooms are freezing cold and the warm blankets can help relax you as well as keep you warm... Plus it helps keep the shivering from cold and fear at bay.

And after the surgery. Get as much rest as you can and if you're able to, little walks and such will help you recover that little bit faster.. very gentle exercise.

And don't skimp on your pain relief. That is one of the things that will help you heal better as time goes on.

you mean you had an agreement with the surgeon not to disclose details of your operation?

Maybe it's not anyone's business and he doesn't want to disclose it on an open forum.. Just maybe?

    LOL! :roflmao: That is hilarious!

Thank you kindly for the advice. Trust me, I'll need it. And I figured I'd go ahead and post what the surgery is on here, even though it is kinda personal and embarassing. I have a few benign tumors on my colon (polyps). If not removed, they could turn cancerous which of course no one wants. The docs say that after the surgery I have to do a followup once a month for a year and that if any pop up again, I'll have to have another surgery.

Yeah. I can laugh about it now. But in that post operative drug induced haze, I was convinced there were primates trying to break through the glass. Got so bad I started hyperventilating and machines went nuts.. Nurses running everywhere.. Ah.. the drugs take away the pain but yeah.. don't keep pressing the button like I did.. I was apparently doing it even while I was passed out from the drugs and I simply woke up and thought they were there..

Yeah. Stuff like that needs to be removed and monitored. It's better to be safe now than sorry.

    You'll be fine.

Ask for the extra warm blankets and try to get out of bed and moving around a bit (even if it's just to walk to the foot of the bed and back) as soon as you're able to if you're not in agony or feeling dizzy or anything like that. Standing up after surgery gives you a good moral boost for one thing and it also gives you that element of control over yourself again. But don't over do it.

Do only what you can and that's it. Don't push yourself in your recovery. If you can only walk two steps, that's fine. Next day walk 3 and so on.

But most importantly, don't try and be brave and get yourself through the pain. If you are in pain, tell them straight away. Apparently they've found that being in pain can put back your recovery, mentally and physically. At one point with me, the morphein wasn't enough and they gave me two paracetamol to take that edge off and yeah.. did wonders in that it masked some of it that the stronger stuff wasn't covering. And it actually allowed me to sit up in bed the night I had the surgery.. Mentally it did so much for me. I wasn't able to sit up for long, but just being even remotely upright felt good at that time. But yeah.. pain relief = best friend. Embrace it.

Also when you're able to consume liquids after the surgery, drink lots of water. You tend to dehydrate during surgery and have a chap stick handy as if you wake up and your lips are dry (which they can be sometimes) and you're not allowed to drink anything yet, the chapstick can help.

Well that's my tips for post operative comfort.

sure but it is more fun with a literal reading of the quote.
the strictures of the confidentiality clause are typically applied to the doctor rather than the patient.

    oh
mz is preggers and he does not want parents to know? he has syphilis and wants to keep his g/f in the dark?

which is it, mz? fess up cos you have no protection in either instance under the law

Ah yes, cancer in the ass is always very embarrassing. Would you like us to write to Radiohead and see if they'll visit you? BTW if you don't watch Southpark you won't get that bit sorry.

I hope all goes well. Do hospitals still give out ice cream and Jello pudding to their patients?
