So back on the topic of the oil leak, if this leak can't be stopped for 3 months, and all the top-kill solutions to slow the leak are failing or have failed... then realistically how far can we expect this oil to spread? I've seen some conservative estimates that say it would at least heavily damage most of the Gulf Coast region from South America all the way to Florida... I've seen others say that it could be taken by the Gulf current, and all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, and possibly up the East Coast. I think it's safe to say that with our economy being the way it is right now, and how Europe is doing, this could have some pretty far-reaching economic repercussions aside from the obvious environmental damage that it will cause.

Another question I might ask; why is it that much of the Crude coming out of the water and reaching the surface has an oxidized color to it? It looks red, like rust. I've seen pictures of other oil spills from tankers and rigs... none of them have this reddish color to the oil. Is there something else coming up with the crude? It's not just the light reflecting off of the oil, because when they had live video of their machine trying to close the emergency valve they also took video of the oil coming out of the broken piping and what was coming out looked red and came out in plumes... some of it looked white and came rushing out as if the water was being super-heated and boiled, and the rest was of course black.

I'm no expert on oil drilling of course, but I do find these observations curious.

    *EDIT*
It should also be noted that as recently as May 13, BP has already acknowledged that their estimates of 5,000 barrels a day were far off.

Actually, it's AWFUL what BP has been doing thus far. In the end they would have better done NOTHING at all, than throw even more toxic garbage into the gulf.
Environmental and economical repercussions are already occurring. It already reached the natural reservations, and the flora and fauna are already suffering great losses. Not even speaking of how much more toxic the whole thing has become thanks to BP's brainless actions..people end up in hospitals because of this, now lets not start wondering how the Hell it must look under water for all the fish, and plants. It's safe to assume that fishing in the Mexican gulf has now become a health hazard, and many fishers in that region will not be able to fish for several years. It's even safe to assume that tourism will suffer, too, since the beaches there will be useless when one can't go swim ..well who would want to go swim into this toxic swamp now..?

Anyway, great job at fucking up. And it's incredible how long it took the US gov to react to this with a little more interest...

The least it could do is ruin the Gulf and certain islands in the Carribean. The worst it could do is undetermined. My guess is that it will head into the Atlantic, enter the Medditeranean and hit Europe.

That is indeed a grim and realistic possibility. BP says that it could take up to 3 months to drill a relief well that might stop the flow from the current leak... but there are still no guarantees that it will work, or that the same thing won't just happen again. Especially if they do a quick, sloppy job and cut corners to get it done as fast as possible. At 60,000 barrels a day, that slick will most certainly stretch across the Atlantic and maybe even touch down in the UK. If that doesn't light a fire under their butts, I don't know what will. Another thing to consider, is that if it alters the flow of the currents in any significant way, it could do a lot more than just get oil every where... it could trigger a terrible cold trend at the least, or an ice age at the worst.

This leak needs to be treated as seriously as possible... no more dilly-dallying... no more procedures to try and preserve the oil so it can be sold... blow the damn thing shut if it can be done.

I believe it was Pinwheel who suggested we nuke the oil. I'm not sure that it's the greatest idea, but atleast it's something. It somewhat upsets me that they aren't doing anything, being that i'm a Florida resident.

Yeah, I'm going to say that a nuke might not be the greatest idea either... talk about jumping out of the pan and into the fire! I wonder if whoever suggested that has ever heard of the term radioactive haha... I can see it now... swordfish with double sets of eyes, 3 swords, and 2 tail fins.

I mean... they have to lower some sort of demolition equipment down there to drill the hole to begin with don't they? Certainly, it must be possible to collapse the well in on itself to plug the hole shut... if pressure is an issue then at least this will buy some time until the relief well can be drilled.

Not just that but think about all that fire. If the oil spread all across the gulf, it would be the biggest fire ever. It'd make for a good fireworks show.

This idea makes sense and probably the most easy to accomplish. But ofcourse BP won't realise this.

I think a lot of people just don't understand the pressures that exist at the well head. That oil is under something like a mile of water pressure in addition too three miles of sea bed. That oil is under a lot of pressure.

If you remove some of the seabed by blasting, you are not going to solve the problem and will likely make it a lot worse. They already tried pumping in mud at high pressures to clog the drill hole and that did not work. A small detonation is not going to seal the pipe. A larger detonation is not going to seal the pipe either. If you nuke it, not only do you have a problem with radiation but any of the oil that is not vaporized in the inital blast will be released into the ocean all at once...not a real bright move either since the blast is likely to only vaporize a small portion of the total oil reserve at that location.

I think their best bet now is what they described today....cut off the wellhead and put a new cap on it.

I knew is was intense but not that much.

The nuke idea was a joke.

What is the chance of it working?

More importantly, if the chances are high, then why didn't they just do that to begin with?

The attempt to cut the pipe and then suck it up to a boat apparently failed... the diamond saw that they used apparently... somehow... managed to get snagged. Now it's pouring out even more oil into the Gulf.

It's so bad even James Cameron, director of the Titanic and Avatar offered to help them... while BP refused, it's rumored that Federal officials have accepted his help.

Speaking of the Federal Government, the FBI has announced that they are going to be launching an investigation into the spill. In all honesty, BP's future isn't looking too good right about now.

Let's also not forget that Hurricane Season is coming... scientists and meteorologists have predicted an active season with a higher percentage of powerful storms.

But really, i was thinking about the fact that the engineers at BP gave the proper assessment for the safety, but they did 6 centralizers instead of something like 23...(they were saving a few bucks, ect.) wouldn't some regulatory engineer in the US have to sign off on that as well for them to be able to do it that way? I know when you build a house, the city comes out and inspects for code violation, ect... wouldn't they do the same thing with an oil rig?

Was the BP oil spill an act of terrorism?

    *************
M*W: Does anyone out there think that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could have been an act of terrorism?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I am just curious if something like this could happen. It could have been thought out for years. I'm not saying who I think could have caused this, I'm just asking right now if there is anyone out there who thinks it could have been an act of terrorism.

Could it be considered an act of terrorism by BP?

I guess it doesn't really matter who or what caused it. It happened, and it's not being fixed.

Another avenue to consider: Could it have been an inside job (Obama's inner circle or the Republican Party, for example)?

    Just curious for debate.

    Thanks.

if it was sabatoged it would have had to been by a government. No one else could get the tools needed to be 100% that they could pull such a thing off.

M*W: That makes me wonder if it could have been another oil company that did it.

If it were intentional, which I certainly doubt it was... what would the purpose be? What would be the motivation? The only people capable of doing it were indeed BP/Halliburton and/or the Government.

But why? There is more than enough support for alternative fuel sources, and BP/Halliburton and the government only stand to lose from this kind of catastrophe.

If I were a real conspiracy theorist loon, I might suspect that the reason was to kill off a whole crap load of people by disrupting the Gulf Current, causing an Ice Age, and/or destroy the economy and enslave the world. Or if I were outright insane, I might make some sort of connection with Revelations 16:4, with it's whole, "Pouring blood into the sea and killing every living thing" schtick and the fact that Oil is known as "the blood of the Earth". If I were both, I'd say it were the Illuminati and self-fulfilled prophecies and 2012.

But again... none of that makes any sense. I am not a Conspiracy theorist loon, nor am I bat-shit insane. I just talk to a lot of those kinds of people and act as their voice of reason.
