Tell me about it. I don't know anyone here who likes to watch erotic drama/comedy or ultraviolent horror. The last time I hijacked someone [my dad] to watch an avant garde film was in the 80s - and he got the heebie jeebies with Victor Victoria!

I end up watching chick flicks and animations, for the most part

Thanks for the recommendations, I feel a movie night coming on...

    Didn't see that one coming.

What happened to all your zenlike, Buddhist monkish peacenikery?

I was brought up on the Mahabharata and Chinese warrior movies [think Jet Li with pigtail]. I don't like slasher movies, but psychological horror.

I recently watched Human Centipede because my curiosity got the better of me. It was fucking horrible; boring and really not all that gory.

Its not at the top of my list. Has anyone seen Anti-Christ (Lars von Trier)? Lucysnow recommended it some time back but I haven't been able to get hold of it yet.

What about crime thrillers? I enjoy movies like L.A. Confidential or John Woo's A Better Tomorrow. Great cop stories. Haven't enjoyed many cop movies since The Usual Suspects or Training Day

Anti-Christ was terrible. I had to fast forward through most of it because it was so boring.

That happened to me with the new Sherlock Holmes. I was so excited about it because of the cast and possible interpretations of Holmes character and it was such a deadly bore that after 15 minutes I lost interest and after 45 minutes I just gave up. And I am a die hard SH fan

Ugh!!! For a neo-noire or whatever it was supposed to be, they couldn't come up with anything better than the undead for a Holmes movie?

But Guy Ritchie and I do not get along - his movies always bore me. 30 minutes of Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels was it for me.

Give me Kevin Smith or the Coen brothers any day

I haven't seen all the Coen bros movies, but I have yet to see a movie by them which I haven't liked. No Country for Old Men and The Ladykillers are among my favourite films. Even with Kevin Smith, I thought Mall Rats and Clerks 2 were so-so, but I was entertained enough to watch the entire film. Chasing Amy and Clerks were superb - both movies are in a class all their own - and Dogma was fantastic!

Not a movie (or necessarily a thriller), but Breaking Bad is the best crime entertainment I've seen in a while. Plus it's filmed near where I grew up so it's fun to spot places I've been... And while you're at it you might as well watch The Wire . There's been a renaissance in American cable TV drama (and comedy) lately, and so many of the best offerings are to be found there rather than in the cinema (which lately seems more geared towards spectacle).

Other good (movie) crime thrillers: Cronicas, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Blue Velvet, Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, the original Get Carter, True Romance, The Way of the Gun... oh, and The French Connection and its sequel... Layer Cake was pretty good (most people prefer the Guy Ritchie stuff for modern British crime dramas, but if you don't like him then give Layer Cake a go instead).

And I'll cop to having enjoyed The Italian Job, even if it is in the squarely-corny "good guy criminal" genre. Also I'm assuming everyone has already seen Le Femme Nikita, The Professional, Ronin, Heat, the various classic Mob movies, Scarface, etc. If not, those are always reliable watches in the crime genre...

Does Raising Arizona count as a crime movie?

I'm assuming you've also seen Hard Boiled then? Definitely my favorite Woo. Although it's lost some of the impact it had upon release, now that Hollywood action movies have appropriated all of Woo's trademarks.

If you like L.A. Confidential you definitely should go check out the old noir classics like The Big Sleep and the later neo-noirs like Chinatown.

You might enjoy Man On Fire then, or Colors. Neither of those are quite as good as the ones you list, but both are still worth a watch. Or in a pinch you can always just go for the old Dirty Harry movies...

Its hard for me to watch television series unless its on DVD. No Tivo!
Don't recall watching any of these movies except The French Connection and possibly Get Carter but both are hazy recollections. I used to watch a lot of Hitchcock growing up because my father was a fan. Ditto for Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane films. Was James Hadley Chase ever converted to film? He was my very first introduction to fictional stories without happy endings and with grayscale heroes.

Yeah The Italian Job was okay but in the gangster category I prefer Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, The Untouchables, Reservoir Dogs, Mou gan doo

I guess, more like a comedy crime movie, though

There was a time when movies from Hong Kong glutted the Indian market and they were all we watched for some years. I think I've seen Hardboiled but not really sure.

Yup seen both including the sequel to Chinatown [The Two Jakes].

Man on Fire was so-so, not as good as Training Day, I preferred Miami Blues and Dog Day Afternoon - I like an action thriller with a story or a character that makes a difference. The cartels, car chases and shootouts don't do anything for me and are pretty much wasted on good actors [there are exceptions like Donnie Brasco and Public Enemies, which proves only that Johnny Depp is beyond characterisation]. I once watched all three Bourne movies in an afternoon and realised they could all be superimposed on each other.

    Have to look up Colors.

:] I don't even get TV service at all (no cable, no dish, no antenna, nothing). All of my TV watching is done on DVD. The downside is that you have to wait some months for the stuff to come out. But the upside is no commercials and I get to watch the entire season over a couple of days (especially satisfying with dramas that include a lot of cliffhanger episodes).

Anyway, the entire run of The Wire is available on DVD, as are the first two seasons of Breaking Bad. Also consider checking out the Generation Kill miniseries.

Was that sequel any good? I've heard it was something of a boondoggle...

I suspect you'll like Colors - it's less action and more drama. A bit dated these days, but still engaging.

Donnie Brasco is a classic, but Public Enemies is a boring waste of film. If you're a Depp fanatic, be sure to watch Dead Man.

The first Bourne movie is the only good one - the rest are just a bunch of shaky-cam and tired spy/action movie tropes.
