One problem in defining mental illness is that many symptoms are aspects of normal behavior taken to extremes, Paranoia is a general term describing beliefs that are persistent counter imperial and centered on the individuals fears.

No evidence can cast doubt on these beliefs, but any fact can become evidence supporting it, for one with paranoid personality disorder everything contributes to a general sense of persecution. Every comment is an attack, every conversation a conspiracy, the sufferer of paranoid personality disorder needs to dominate others but is easily dominated, and they never accept blame but are constantly critical.

For the delusional paranoiac a single irrational belief is unshakable, the sufferer may believe they have a relationship with a media personality or that their friends are trying to poison them, these delusions are remarkable in their complexity and logic which is absent from the irrational beliefs of ordinary people.

In schizophrenic paranoia there is the same specificity but no coherence, thinking is vague and confused, emotions are shallow often there are auditory and visual hallucinations.
While some insanity is organic the majority is just the psychological coping mechanisms used by everyone taken to extremes, were exploitation and betrayal are a way of life everyone is paranoid.

I have paranoia caused by anxiety. I have unrealistic fears of social interaction. For example I am scared someone will pick on me. My doctor says the only way to work with this problem is medication. He also wants to check if its genetic.(Which I am pretty darn sure it is a huge percentage of my direct relatives have anxiety issues... but then it can be the upbringing.)

Schizophrenic people tend to create conspiracies about their life being in danger. Aliens, FBI, Nazi's etc. I know a guy he was born a normal boy but when he turned 18 he started to change. He called the police at one point because he thought the hotel he was sleeping in was "shady". He has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia.

I read somewhere that Schizophrenia is caused by the slow deterioration of the brain.

I think you can find more information right 'bout here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia

    Treatment and Cure of Paranoia

"A cure of paranoia is very difficult and it is essential that treatment should be started immediately the disease comes to be known. Once it grows on a person there is no curing to it. The chief method of curing it is the following:

Psychoanalytic method - Compared to other mental diseases, this disease does not respond immediately to psychoanalytic treatment because, being suspicious, the patient does not cooperate with the doctor. Even then, with due precaution, certain results can be achieved by employing this method.

Injection of Insulin- some patients also responds to this treatment but this cannot be said of all.

    Prognosis of Paranoia

Predicting the prognosis of an individual suffering from Paranoia is quite difficult. Paranoia generally becomes a whole life or lifelong condition if there exists any underlying mental disorder, such as schizophrenia or paranoid personality disorder. It certainly and sometimes get better with some treatments or remission or with slight changes in medication. People who have symptoms of paranoia as part of another medical condition may also have a waxing and waning mental course.

Sometimes it is the case that paranoia is caused by the use of a particular drug or medication. In this case, it is possible that discontinuing that substance may completely reverse the symptoms of paranoia."

Mental illness is one of the most debilitating experiences you can have...

one, your illness is not visible except when it is manifested by your actions, which seem completely under your control even when they are not.

two, it carries the stigma that ppl with mental illness are "crazy"; that they are not normal; that they must be stupid or selfish.

three, mental illness does not recieve the proper treatment or understanding it deserves in most countries everywhere.

I have suffered from mental illness on and off my whole life. I am a normal human being. I am a cute, 25 yo female, I graduated from a University with a 3.6 gpa, I volunteered, I did internships, I have had continuous jobs since 14...

yet...I am different. I percieve reality in a very different way then most people.

Which is ironic, as it seems that people that pay attention to stigmas and stereotypes are often stupid, selfish and crazy.

i dont see much difference. should we say: mentally impaired, mentally challenged (but that may insinuate stupidity) but of course not "he\she is a mental case".

No because using case at the end is no good. Mentally imbalanced? I just though everyone was crazy when i was a child. To me crazy was normal, not too crazy but what do they say? Peculiar.

I, for one, prefer 'bat shit crazy.'
It's concise and to the point, and everyone can understand it.

However, the point that jessiej920 was making above is that mental illnesses of all sorts are actually quite common and not necessarily a sign of being 'bat shit crazy.'
Hell, the Cheshire Cat was probably right on the money. We're all mad here.
    Even so...
Having a mental illness does not mean a person is 'bat shit crazy' anymore than a hunter owning a rifle makes him a sniper in the book depository.

Yes true. I dont agree with people calling these "quirks" a person may have crazy either though. Hell if we went down that route then were is the creativity? We will all be just retainers of information already given with no new discoveries.

Like I said mental illness is an aspect of normal behavior taken to extremes, now given that I'm related to a person who I think of as "Bat Shit Crazy" and I'm very troubled about the possibility of inheriting this trait. So I always react strongly in the other direction when I find myself falling into depressive paranoid thinking.

Everyone says I'm really easy going and down to earth by I really do work hard to try and be this way, its like I decided I want to be this sort of person, but sometime I just say "Fuck it" and let my inner rage express itself but under all of it I'm always actually in control.

The mind is kind of like a piñata. When it’s smashed open, there are a lot of surprises inside. Once you get the piñata perspective, you see that going insane can be an interesting experience. I suppose it is much more comfortable to be mad and know it, than to be sane and have one's doubts.
